Is there anyone who has access to the NY State Census images who would look up a couple of people for me? I am trying to find out the birth county for Orrin B. Ide, born 1820 New York, who lived in Saratoga in 1850 and may have still been there in 1855. By 1860 he had moved to Michigan. I am also trying to find the birth county for Royal Ide, born 1825 in New York, who lived in Niagara in 1860. By 1870, he had moved to Michigan. My ancestor is Harris Ide, born in 1821 in Rensselaer County. Thanks for any help! Linda Wagner
Thank you for the responses so far. Dick, I checked the link you provided, and found it informative. I will monitor it. I agree that there are many ways that our identities can be stolen. I personally try to limit the information about myself that is given out, having refused to do business with companies that have demanded excessive information. But, it is MY choice to provide it or not. By way of clarification, I guess my concern may be more with the issue of responsibility. As family history researchers, we are admonished not to include names of living persons in data we release without their permission. This applies to sharing, publishing or posting on line. I feel it is a poor practice for Ancestry.com or any other company to knowingly violate that principle. In the case of the California birth records, information about millions of living people has been released on a worldwide forum. In my view, recent birth records are not the same as newspaper articles, obituaries, directories, etc. They should be treated differently. It is my opinion that the policy for release of the census should apply to birth records as well. Even though I may be in the minority, I do value your input. It is always helpful to look at things from different perspectives. Out of respect to the purpose of this list, the discussion may be continued privately. Thank you for your views. Kay
If you have a NY state library card, you can access the Heritage Quest program through for FREE, through your being a member of the library system. Call or contact the larger libraries in either Albany, Syracuse or Rochester for more details. I've been told some of the smaller town libraries may also have this available, but I would contact one of the 3 larger ones, that have genealogy departments to get more detail on the FREE usage of Heritage Quest, through your library. I live out of state, but have a NY state card, because when I go there, I do research. I'm sure others on this list are more familiar with how to sign up for this very useful tool, since you can view Census records from your home, 24/7 and its FREE. Other items besides the census are available for viewing, so contact one of the larger libraries (you can use google to find them), and ask. It never hurts to ask. Dianne
Hi Kay, A few years back...maybe 5 or so...the State of California was selling CD's of the CABI (California Birth Index) to whoever could come up with the $1000.00 for the set. Ancestry purchased a set and so did I. I guess it's like trying to put a genie back in the bottle. For a while, Ancestry did not have these on their site due to possible litigation...I think. Apparently that's been settled. My siblings, my parents, aunts, uncles, inlaws and outlaws are all on the CABI. Before all the problems with identity theft, these records were available in the local newspapers and people could walk into the recorders office and get a birth certificate for anyone...that gap has been eliminated BUT crooks are ALWAYS going to find a way around a rule. Let's punish the law breakers...not the law abiders who just want to find family. I don't think you have anything to worry about...most identity thieves go for the easy 'get'...they just go through your trash! I have been a 'lurker' here, hoping to spot some info on my New York ancestors. The discussion on vital records access began just after I became aware of a situation I find very troubling. In light of this discussion, I thought it may be appropriate to request some feed-back, even though it does not directly relate to NY ancestors. I discovered on Ancestry.com a database called "California Birth Index 1905-1995". Entering my maiden name brought up myself, my brother, my children and 6 cousins. The index contains: full name, date of birth, gender, county of birth, and mother's maiden name. All information which can be used for identity theft. These entries were for births between 1956 and 1995. Ten of the persons in question are still living. I consider it an act of gross negligence on the part of the State of California and Ancestry.com to place such recent records on-line. Although it may be very common, this is the first time I have found such recent information from birth records so easily available. Feedback, please. Am I over-reacting, or would others be upset to find this information?
There is a paragraph or two on my website, on the lower part of the home page at www.ny-genes.com about this whole discussion. The Federation of Genealogical Societies/National Genealogical Society, and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies has been monitoring and reporting on this subject for some time now. Check it out and follow the links for more information. Thanks so much, Maggie. It certainly does explain it simply and truthfully......so refreshing!! I wish my library would offer services like that. Last week the interlibrary system here in my area adopted a new rule that will charge members $6 for every book borrowed thru interlibrary loan that is "outside" of their 72 library region. It depends upon your identification number and when your subscription to Godfrey is up. Certain numbers (sorry, don't remember what they said) are out of luck already. I can still access Heritage through Godfrey until I re-up in June. Luckily for me, my Los Angeles County Library Card allows me to search Heritage from home. Perhaps other libraries have done the same. Jean Snow
Because Kevin note WAS political, and Susicp simply gave link to an important article that everyone who does genealogy should be concerned about no matter what party you belong to! Its a trend beginning to happen to restrict our access to the records we so desperately need to do our research. It doesn't matter what connections the magazine has to what party, the message is that we could lose access to the records we do reseach with!!!! Also, while the rules are the same, 70 years, the article mentioned 70 to 100 years! I for one, would not be happy if they uped it to 100 years! In NJ one of our assemblyman is trying to put through a bill that could restrict our access. I don't even know what party the person is with that proposed this bill, but I don't see everyone whining over the republicans or democrates being picked on. Instead everyone is joining together to send letters to our assemblymen to add a clause that would allow non certified records for genealogy! And thats the point to being INFORMED about what is going on. People should be writing in to protect our access instead of crying over Bush's name be attached to it. I wouldn't care if its Bush or President Clinton, I would want to know what was going on, and to try to get it changed so we don't lose our access! I totally resent the subject line - BUSH ACT, Kooks Attempting to Disrupt Genealogy! The article entitled, "Information Is Power" from the SOCIALIST left leaning rag, In These Times, is extremely political, and blames the Bush administration for attempting to shut down access to public records. This is a farce and anyone with a brain should take it for what it's worth. a rag in which to wrap up their garbage. States have the right to regulate the vital records of their residents. The federal government regulates national records, like census and military records, etc. The US government has not attempted to change this procedure in obtaining these records. 70 years has always been the case in US census records You give me one reason why should a stranger be able to access your birth record, if you are still alive. I believe these records are private and should remain that way. "But reporters and activists won't be allowed to fish through records" So you want these people to be able to find information on you and your family without your consent. Individuals who show up in person will still be able to obtain their own birth certificates, and in some cases, the birth and death records of an immediate relative; and "legitimate" research institutions may be able to access files. Isn't this the appropriate right of privacy we all want and deserve? Give me a break; the public will always be able to access their personal private records and those of their immediate family. Kevin is spot on. As an unbiased reader, the information that SusiCP posted pertains to genealogy and the potential threat to acquiring genealogical records, in various parts of the country. Author Terry J. Allen's tone is slanted against the present federal administration; this does not infer that SusiCP agrees with Allen's predisposition. Privacy changes are being considered by the federal administration, led by the present Commander in Chief, no matter what his political affiliation or name is. Whatever changes evolve, the present national leaders are responsible for them. It's as simple as that. It's amazing that folks impulsively start name calling and drawing lines over this, when our social security numbers have been required for the most inane reasons, and people cooperate in revealing theirs. It doesn't matter if you are one of those "blue folks" or one of those "red folks," as the media divisively labeled us in the recent presidential election, it isn't time to play the McCoys versus the Hatfields online. How about some common sense and manners here? Don, FindUSA recently dropped Godfrey Memorial Library and other public libraries because of privacy issues. HeritageQuest is still available to current subscribers of Godfrey Memorial Library until their subscriptions expire or the end of 2006, whichever comes earlier. New subscribers to Godfrey do not have access to HeritageQuest. According to email letters sent from the Director, HeritageQuest would not renew their agreement with Godfrey regardless of the price. He didn't explain the reason. Godfrey Memorial Library's recent loss of HeritageQuest and FindUSA may be another example of how records are beginning to be closed to the public. We had better get what we can now, before it is too late! On 2/27/06 (9:38:06 PM MST), SusiCP (SusiCP@aol.com) posted a link to an article from the magazine "In These Times" concerning the availability of birth and death certificates. Here's a bit of background on this politically affiliated magazine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_These_Times I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. As a California resident who has had records closed in the past 24 months, this is a big deal! At one time I could view the death certificate index for Santa Clara County without restriction...allowing me to help MANY genealogists all over the country...even the world. Using the index I could find records for folks who only had limited information about their 'brick wall'. Folks would give me a last name and possible first name and using the index I could see if that person died in Santa Clara County...then actually VIEW the death certificate and either confirm for the person asking whether it was who they were looking for or not. I even did transcriptions for lots of folks. The same was possible for marriage certificates. Births were more difficult...and I didn't have a problem with that since THAT'S where identity theft usually occurs...you had to have the full name of the child and the mother's maiden name. I can still access death certs BUT NOT the index. So you have to have all the information you might be looking for to be able to have the death cert 'pop up' on the computer! This certainly doesn't help folks who are looking for that elusive uncle that left NY State for the Gold Fields of California and ended up in Santa Clara County!! In California there is no time limit...so the death index for folks who DIED in 1908 is still closed! Amazing but true! The posting by SusiCP IS in my opinion something that all of us as genealogists should be concerned about...just because the information came from a left leaning publication shouldn't close our minds to the very real possibility that information we and our ancestors have freely given will not be available for our descendents! Identity theft is a very real concern, but let's punish those who do the crime...NOT those of us who want to learn about our ancestors and document appropriately!
