    1. Re: General census question
    2. Jan, The answer to your question is to do an advanced Google Search. I did so, and found, in 10 seconds, the following URL: http://www.ancestry.com/charts/census.aspx Carl Hommel -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Jan Miller" <jgrellim@sbcglobal.net> > How does one find out what questions were asked on each individual census? > The questions do vary from one census to another, and I'm particularly > interested in those asked in 1840, and specifically -- if the question about > Household members was, "How many persons living in this household -- > January 1 of the current year?" > > I'm trying to pinpoint sticky confusion on a date of death. > Thanks for any help! > Jan > > > > > ==== GEN-NYS Mailing List ==== > Have you forgotten how to UNSUBSCRIBE? > Visit the GEN-NYS-L Frequently Asked Questions (And Answers!) web page: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~nozell/GEN-NYS-L/FAQ/GEN-NYS-L.html >

    1. General census question
    2. Jan Miller
    3. How does one find out what questions were asked on each individual census? The questions do vary from one census to another, and I'm particularly interested in those asked in 1840, and specifically -- if the question about Household members was, "How many persons living in this household -- January 1 of the current year?" I'm trying to pinpoint sticky confusion on a date of death. Thanks for any help! Jan

    1. Municipal Archives tour
    2. Jan Miller
    3. A while back, a LI genealogy group had a bus trip planned to Municipal Archives in NYC. When I picked up their message on the lister service, they were a few seats short of filling the bus, so I offered to 'pay for a seat' the bus if someone would do a look-up for me while there. I sent the money, someone did the look-up, found my grandparents 1884 marriage record in Brooklyn, and I was thrilled! It was grandparents I'd never met as they died just after I was born, and of course, my parents were gone when I started my genealogy...... I'm hoping this approach will be effective again, because I have 3 family members who died on Staten Island between 1864 and 1867, for whom I have no death record [or burial] other than family statements. I can get little help through letters to various sites--have been told it's the Municipal Archives and it's best to go there oneself. Except I live in California. SO-- If someone is planning a trip to the Archives, may I 'pay my way' for a kind soul to do 3 look-ups? All were members of the same SI Reformed Dutch Church in Northfield or Port Richmond. Don't remember the actual cost for that bus ride into the City, but I think I sent $20. I'll provide the details off line if there is a volunteer and/or a trip scheduled in which I can participate. Jan in California

    3. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/ontario/cems/canandaigua/calvary/calvindex.html With much gratitude to Ron Hanley, over 1,500 pictures of tombstones and cemetery information has been added to the Canandaigua Calvary cemetery, that Ron has been photographing and organizing by sections, for a couple of years. He has been a great contributor of various information for this website and has recently published a 14 volume set of history and genealogy, convering many of his family lines in the Ontario and Monroe counties and some other surrounding areas. His dedication is endless. I invite you to have a look at the pictures (thumbnails that can be clicked on for larger pictures) of his work in this cemetery, and hope to encourage people to do the same of cemeteries in their area, to contribute or create their own website with pictures of headstones, free for those researching in a given area. I have also updates a few other cemeteries, and adding more pictures from another donor, shortly, and soon to add more biographies and some history. Have fun! Dianne

    2. Mr. Ed
    3. While I was searching the obituaries in the News Bank I did come across a mention of a survivors who was from Pompton Plains,N.Y.. Not no relation to me but notice it because of your post. The new paper was the Poughkeepsie Journal (NY) - January 17, 2006, so there may be a Pompton Plains,N.Y. -----Original Message----- From: Robert Akin [mailto:robert_akin@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2006 12:06 PM To: GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Pompton Plains Thanks to those who responded to my query trying to locate Pompton Plains, NY. We have all decided that the only Pompton Plains is in New Jersey (Zip 07444) - not NY. The train station that I referred to in my original post also is in NJ. The puzzeling aspect of this is that there are a fair number of people whose address comes up Pompton Plains, NY. This village is within 15 miles of the NY line, but is not large enough to sprawl over it. If anyone disagrees that Pompton Plains is only in New Jersey, please respond. ==== GEN-NYS Mailing List ==== Have you forgotten how to UNSUBSCRIBE? 1. Pompton Plains
    2. Could it be that, at some time in the past, "Pompton Plains" was a New York postal zone whose service area included part of adjoining New Jersey? A mailing address can be quite confusing as to where exactly -- in which community -- a place is located. The last line of any place's mailing address, anywhere in the U.S., is: Postal City, Postal State & ZIP Code There are numerous places where the postal zone is based in a different state than is the community being served. For example: Fisher Island, and island hamlet in the Town of Southold on Long Island's north fork, has a Connecticut '06' ZIP code as its mail is delivered out of New London, CT. Parts of western Massachusetts have a New York ZIP Code as their mail is delivered out of a postal in New York State. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY NEWS ITEM: RENSS. CO. CLERK PARTNERS WITH TROY IRISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY A partnership between Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola and members of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society (TIGS) has resulted in the automation of over 5,000 marriage records in Rensselaer County beginning in 1908. When complete, over 30,000 Rensselaer County marriages between 1908 and 1935 will be automated and available for searching through the Genealogy society's website. "I am very pleased to be involved in this partnership with a great organization that is willing to take the time and effort necessary to open our historical records through the use of the internet which will allow those interested to search these records from their home or office rather than in taking a trip into Troy to examine these books," Mr. Merola said, "I am very grateful to TIGS president Donna Vaughn, project coordinator Bill McGrath, webmaster/librarian Jeanne Keefe, and the rest of the members of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society who contributed the time and effort necessary to complete this large project. TIGS volunteers from around the US worked to convert the original marriage index records to digital files which made them accessible through the Internet." Anyone interested in viewing the first index of marriage records is encouraged to go to the Troy Irish Genealogy Society website at www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on 'TIGS PROJECTS and then Rensselaer County Marriage Index, Vol. 1. These records cover the general area population and are not restricted to Irish surnames. The website also provides a printable form that can be used to request copies of the Affidavit for License to Marry, the Certificate and Record of Marriage and in the case of minors, the Certificate of Consent from the Rensselaer County Clerk's office. The Rensselaer County Clerk's office charges a $5.00 fee for retrieval services of these marriage records. The marriage forms provided by the County Clerk's Office, Mr. Merola stated, will be of great interest to family researchers. Some items of interest on the forms, Merola indicated, are the ages, addresses, occupations and place of birth of the bride and groom as well as the names and place of both of the parents. Mr. Merola anticipates a continuation of this project until the ten volume Marriage Index has been completed and foresees future collaboration with the Troy Irish Genealogy Society that will benefit Rensselaer County residents and historians alike. "Preservation of our records has always been a priority of mine because our heritage is irreplaceable. We have made tremendous progress in restoring County naturalization records and with the help of organizations such as the Irish Genealogy Society we will not only be able to preserve our records but develop a format where people can utilize modern methods to search their histories. I am thrilled to partner with this great organization and I am thrilled about the future of genealogy in Rensselaer County. END OF NEWS ITEM
