    1. Lebanon Springs MORE?
    2. Daniel David Lewis Frommherz
    3. Lebanon Springs would have been located in Albany County New York until 1786. In this year the whole area was cut up to form a new county that was named Columbia County. Lebanon Springs would have been in the unincorporated area known as the King's District outside of Caanen. The town of Caanen absorbed part of the King's District over a period of time. In 1810 New Lebanon was incorporated as a town of its own. I do not believe that Caanen ever had anything to do with Lebanon nor had Lebanon anything to do with Caanen. However it is known that inhabitants of the King's District worshiped in the churches located in Caanen and many or their children were baptized there. Caanen had a Baptist church located in the town too. Caanen was a town that just grew and grew as did Lebanon. Neither I believe were considered Townships of a predetermined size at initial inhabitation. Both areas were bye the bye evacuated almost entirely due to the Indian Uprisings after 1756 but before 1763 that was settled after 1763 and before 1767. The early inhabitants were loyalist and looked to the King for permission to settle the land rather than rent from a "NABOB". Many of the settlers who came to the area returned after the uprising was settled with the indians and resumed life on the farms they had previously abandoned. 1. Jacob G. Klock, Justice (1738-1714) -- looking for biographical material
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Hi folks, I am searching for any detailed biographical information about Judge Jacob G. Klock, born 9 March 1738 in the Mohawk Valley of New York, died 10 September 1814. Jacob married first Hannah (Anna), daughter of Christian Nellis and wife Barvalis Klock. He married second on 30 September 1784 Maritje, born 16 January 1748, died 3 May 1836, daughter of Lieut. Cornelius Beekmnan. He practiced law at Kingston and was a member of the Assembly for Temporary Government of the Southern District of New York during the Revolution. Later, he was a member of the first New York State Senate. I know the NY Senate & Assembly of the later 1800's used to publish hardcover books profiling it's members when they passed away. I wonder if something similar exists for Jacob. Maybe a book was published on the first Senators of New York State???? I am interested in any documents he may have signed, any cases he may have presided over, any photos of places or people associated with his life, etc -- and of course any descendants out there!!!! Thanks in advance for any help!!! Mark A. Wentling P.S. -- See my Mohawk Valley ancestry at LEGENDS: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/welcome.html

    3. I am approaching this with a red face and a sheepish manner. A few months ago I asked for help in locating the county that Lebanon Springs is in. I am trying to locate my g.grandparents marriage permit and I believe that is where they were married--sometime prior to 1860. I received my answer (somewhere close to Albany I think) and also a very gracious viewer sent me the name and addy of an historical society nearby that was very good about doing lookups for a small donation. Well, "ole fumble fingers" (that's me) deleted it and I sure would like to have it again, plus the county. I have tried Cyndi"s list and everything seems to require a county name. If anyone can help out with this I PROMISE not to lose it again. Thank You!!! Margaret in NV

    3. (Cont.) Invested all my money in a mining claim which we had to abandon after taking out a few hundred dollars, on account of the water ditch failing on which we depended for washing gold. I borrowed $300, and went to San Francisco, intending to take the steamer for the east. There I met the President of the Sutter :mad Cp/ & was induced by the promise of good pay in the office of the company at Sutterville - a promising new town then starting on the river three miles below Sacramento: which city was in a distressed condition on account of lately having been burned, and its streets at that time were impassable for wheeled vehicles on account of being flooded. So I went back to Sutterville, and had the luck to make money pretty freely in such office work as writing contracts and deeds etc. The ordinary charges for writing a deed or article of agreement were 10 to 20 dollars, and then I was elected Justice of the Peace for Sutterville and also Associate Justice of the Court of Sessions for the City and County of Sacramento and at the same time was appointed commissioner on the part of the county to oversee the building of a large Court House which was to be let to the State for the Legislature & State offices till the State could build a capital building, so that my salary for attending duties in Sacramento amounted to $20 a day, besides what I made at my office in Sutterville as Justice of the Peace which was often as much more in addition. I kept a horse and rode to Sacramento every day to the court and could generally have most of my afternoons at my Justice office. So I made thousands of dollars during my two years of office. When my term expired I came East & took my wife & sister Martha to California. I stopped in Sacramento a year, and then moved to Folsom to practice law. While there for six years was twice elected Justice of the Peace, was appointed Postmaster, Notary Public, and deputy County Surveyor and Deputy District Attorney for the county and had a good law practice. I lost my wife in 1862, and resigned my postmastership and came east and travelled a great deal. Was Consul 3 1/2 years at a $2,000 salary, and in the customs house as U.S. Storekeeper in New York one year and Inspector of the Customs 19 years - at $1,400 a year. Have spent thousands of dollars on patent rights and more thousands in travelling, and a great many thousands in high rents & other extravagances. Brooklyn, August 1891 Gilbert M. Cole This ends the memoranda of the life of Gilbert M. Cole.

    3. (Cont.) The law at that time required proof of seven years clerkship under the tutorage of a practicing lawyer before one could be admitted to the bar: so while I was teaching school I employed myspare time in reading law - first with Josiah Ferris whileteaching at Peach Orchard - and then with Peter Y. Cutler while teaching in Lodi Village. On returning from the western trip, I resumed law studies in the office of Seward, Morgan & Blatchford at Auburn. Was there two years & in 1848 was examined at Rochester & admitted to the bar in all the courts of this state. Feeling the need of more active exercise, I bought an unimproved farm in Michigan, and with my axe cleared up & fenced a few fields, put up good buildings, planted orchards, and started a country store which proved to be an unprofitable enterprise on account of selling too much in credit and not being able to collect bills. When I was 30 years of age in 1850 I married Caroline Severns of Lodi, and took her to my Michigan home in the town of Henrietta, Jackson Co. I had a good deal of ague & feber there, caused from cultivating the new, rich soil about our home. During the 3 or 4 years there I did considerable surveying, was elected Town Clerk, and the first winter taught school in an old log house. In 1852 I sold out & went to California, leaving my wife with her parents in Lodi in the meantime.

    3. (Cont.) The following summer I was 21 and went that summer term also, thus making my seminary schooling three terms of 22 weeks each, excepting 4 weeks off of the first term. I should have been glad to have continued my studies, but could not afford the expenses. The next winter (1841-42) I was offered $16 a month to teach the Lamercan (?) district school and as that was nearly double the wages usually paid for such service, I accepted, and by teaching the improved system, my school gained wide celebrity, and I was offered $24. a month to teach the Peach Orchard district school the following summer. That school became still more celebrated - and then I was offered $29. to teach the Lodi village school. So I taught there till the spring of 1846. While there I was elected as School Inspector and Superintendent of Common Schools. The Militia law of the state then held all men between the ages of 18 & 45 liable to military duty, to be called out twice every year to company drill, and Regimental General Training, but Commissioned officers were required to serve only 4 years. When I was 18, before training at all, I was elected Ensign of our company, and received my commission from Governor Wm. L. Marcy. The next year was promoted by being elected lieutenant, receiving my commission from Governor Wm. H. Seward, & the following year was promoted by being elected Captain and was commissioned by Gov'n. Seward also. Having satisfied the law by 4 years service as commissioned officer, I resigned the Captaincy in 1842 In the spring of 1846 becoming tired of a pedagogue life, I quit teaching, and took a trip out through Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, & Wisconsin which was then considered "Far West." Chicago was then an insignificant town of 12,000 inhabitants. Thence went round the circuit of the Great Lakes, stopping at the principal places of interest as Milwaukee, Mackinaw & Niagara.
