Hello, I wrote to a historical soc that has all censuses for all states. I was told that most 1870 censuses in NY are not indexed. I also requested indexes from the 1900 NY census and was told that this census is indexed only by the Soundex system, on microfilm, that there isn't a published index for most states for 1900. Does anyone know anywhere, if any, I can access the index for 1900 and how indexing by soundex works. Thank you very much. Marilyn reynolds@3-cities.com
Thank you so much to everybody great site particularly the undelivered letters from people back home. Funny I always just thought of it as a US or Canadian business. Slices of history that get lost with time. Toni.

Toni, This is from Everton's Handybook 9th edition (1999): "In 1713 the Treaty of Ultrect awarded the Hudson Bay region and Newfoundland to the British." So you see, the land was awarded long before there was a Canada or U.S.A. Looking in the Source and in Evertons, I was unable to find a reference to the Hudson Bay Co. If there are records, my guess would be to look in the National Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington St., Ottawa ON K1A0N3, Canada. Mary A. Greetings NY List: I need some guidance on how to find a "missing person"--he is (or was) my great-uncle, Edwin Boyd Van Vleck, born May 30, 1890, in Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY. Apparently he was somewhat of an adventurer or perhaps something worse! He seems to have left the Oswego area by the early 1920s, leaving behind a family that since scattered and is gone now. His only known son died at age 80 in 1995--before I discovered genealogy, unfortunately! My great-uncle kept in touch with my grandfather, Charles Van Vleck, but whatever they discussed has gone to the grave with my grandfather. I don't know of anyone who is alive who would be able to offer any clues as to where and when he died. One of my aunts insists that he moved "out west" -- possibly to Missouri -- and changed his name to Harold Johnson! A needle in the haystack? I've checked the Social Security Index and found nothing. I have a picture that I think is of him in a uniform -- my mother thinks perhaps he was in World War I. I've not checked that possibility yet. So, does anyone have any thoughts on how to find someone who must be dead by now and who probably didn't want to be found? Thanks so much! Writing to you from a muggy Austin, TX, Marilyn Hough Stern
Some excellent records for anyone whose ancestors have past Railroad employment histories: RAILROAD RECORDS http://www.rrb.gov/ RAILROAD RECORDS BEFORE 1936: http://www.rrb.gov/geneal2.html I got these from another site and have not checked them out. But there were so many requests for possible railroad employment records. NRedell
Up for bid on eBay, "Silver Linings," (Christmas 1930), a book once belonging to the above named person.
Hi All, Just came from our local library in CB and they do not have the 1840 NY Census Index and was wondering if any individual has access to: A Lookup from INDEX - PAQUIN, PEQUIN, specifically for Conrad or James, John in Oswego? or wherever they turn up! I thank you very much and am willing to exchange other state Index lookups. ~C in CA

Does anyone know a mailing list for Essex Co, New York State.
Does anyone know anything about the following people buried next to one another in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Parish? Ford, Jemima wife of Richard Ford d. May 1841 Avery, William 75 yr. d. Feb. 13 1849 his wife- Jemima Avery 1778 - 1862 WIlliam & Jemima Ford Avery were both born in Connecticut and moved to Duanesburg & montgomery Co., New York, before settling in Parish, Oswego Co. in 1818. I have a possible lineage for Jemima from a book on descendants of the New England immigrant Matthew Ford, that includes a Richard & Jemima Ford who had a daughter named Jemima at the right time, but no marriage is listed. William Avery and Jemima Ford had a son born 7 May 1809 named Richard Ford Avery. The fact that Richard is not buried with his wife and the fact that Richard Ford Avery was born before the Avery's came to Oswego, supports the theory that Richard & Jemima Ford couple in the cemetery came from elsewhere too -- probably, Richard died first and William & Jemima brought her widowed mother with them to Oswego County? Thanks for any help!! Mark A. Wentling

Dear Listers: I'm hoping someone out there can help me locate the address of a family member back in the early 1900s. Having come up empty when looking in census records where I was told they lived, I thought I would try finding the school records of their daughter who would have graduated from Brown "s Business collage in abt. 1905. She also attended Methodist Deaconess institue, but that may have been after she married my Grandfather in 1907, as he was a Methodist Episcopal minister. Her family was Episcopal from what I'm told. They were supposed to live in Brooklyn,Redhook or the "the point" but I can't find any record of them in city directory or census if I'm looking in the right spot. Have checked death indexes for several years, nothing. If anyone out there can tell me where to find or write for these records it would perhaps be the clue that I need to find this family. William Henry or Henry WHIDDEN and his wife Sarah. Their daughter was Catharine Whidden Hegarty. Regards, Nancy Kie
