    1. Esther (Braman) Herrick
    2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. I found out something real interesting today. A friend who lives in Rutland called me. Both she and I have the microfilm of the Middletown, Rutland Co., VT Baptist Church records. I thought I had taken out all the names in which I had an interest, but in looking through it, she found something I hadn't. In Vol. 2, page 82, Chh Records for 1804: May 17. Then held preparatory meeting at the meeting house. At this meeting we received Sister Esther Herrick by letter from the Second Baptist Chh in Greenfield. This would be the widow of Ebenezer Herrick who died in 1796 in Greenfield, Saratoga Co., NY. I'm betting she came to Middletown, VT to live with her daughter, Phebe (Herrick) Rudd. Phebe dies in 1825 according to the church record. Her first husband, Silas Rudd, had died about 1804, and she wouldn't yet have married John Davis. Esther Herrick is also listed in Vol. 3, but there's no dates after her name or info as to what happened to her. There's no cemetery listing for her in Middletown, but then there are no listings for the Rudds there either. According to the town history, Increase(4) Rudd (father of Silas) gave land on his property to be used as a cemetery, but it's been gone for over 100 years. Anyone with info on these Herrick and Rudd families, please contact me. Joann Nichols jnichols@sover.net

    1. NY City coal dealers
    2. Dr. Pamela Knapp
    3. Dear List- Does anyone know if there might be records left by old coal companies? I was wondering whether there was some sort of coal dealer's business association in NY City in the mid-late 1800s and early 1900s. Both sides of my mother's family owned coalyards...one on the East River and one on the west side. I will try calling the NY Public Library to see if they have some idea about these types of business associations, but thought someone on the list might have run into this sort of question. Thanks! -Pam Pamela E. Knapp Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology MS 207 Chandler Medical Center University of Kentucky Lexington, KY 40536-0298 606-323-3517 606-323-5946 (FAX)

    1. Fw: Lorin D. CHAPIN of the NEW YORK SHIFFLER CLUB
    2. RAYMOND McGRATH
    3. - I have been meaning to post this query. What is the NEW YORK SHIFFLER CLUB? Would like to receive any information pertaining to it, and of Lorin D. CHAPIN. Would anyone know where the original copy of this memorial speech could be? It looks like to me it could be minutes of a meeting. One of my ancestors, Lorin D. CHAPIN received a very nice memorial speech (an old typewritten copy) from the NEW YORK SHIFFLER CLUB, which I've included as follows: At a special meeting of the New York Shiffler Club, held on the 22nd day of April, 1848, Edward Green, Esq., offered the following preamble. Whereas, an all wise providence has seen fit to remove from among us our well beloved friend, Brother and Compatriot, Lorin D. Chapin, Esq., late editor of the Daily Times, Therefore be it Resolved, That we, the members of the New York Shiffler Club, regard the death of our worthy and esteemed associate, Lorin D. Chapin, Esq., as a great and irreparable loss, and that while we bow with submission to the decree that has bereft us forever from his invaluable services, we desire to place on record this feeble testimony of our high admiration of his character, our gratitude for his many years of unrewarded labor in our cause and our deep regret that he was not lived to witness the eventual triumph of those glorious principle to which his life was devoted. Resolved: That we offer our sincere condolence to his bereaved wife and family, and would mingle our sorrow with theirs in the loss they have sustained. Resolved: That a copy of these resolutions, properly attested and accompanied by a suitable letter be transmitted to the widow and family of our decease friend. Whereupon putting the motion the President requested each member of the club that approved the resolution to rise which was acceded to by every one in the room. It was further resolved, that the members of the club wear the usual badge of mourning on all public occasions for the succeeding six months. Resolved, that the foregoing resolutions be published in the Gazette & Times and the American Sentinel. David S. Hunt, President Chas. Smithson Wm. S. Ross, Vice President John C. 1. Someone sarting with the 1860 Census for NYC wanted
    2. Daniel David Lewis Frommherz
    3. Hi Dennis, Also to the lists near and in New York City Your suggestions are taken in the form of giving that I expect they were offered. I would not have written had I not exhausted all the other leads. I have the index for 1860 the person I am searching for in NYC is listed there as James A. Woods. I have spent enough in CAPITAL LETTERS ordering films from here, there, traveling across town, to the next town and over 500 miles one way to the nearest NARA in Seattle. For the time being I am exhausted and just want to stay home working in my garden. All I wanted when I wrote the original message to the list was to contact someone with the Census in their hands. You cannot tell me that there isn't somebody out there who does not have it. For the US Census of 1870, there is no index to the area I am searching. The same is true of the US Census for 1880 unless you had a child under the age of 10. So unless there were additional children which my grandmother does not ever mention the parents had no more in their family or she is the youngest this takes into account that she might also be the only child too. Something happened between 1870 and 1880 as the person I am seeking in listed in the Mount Vernon area of East Chester Township, Westchester County, New York. In 1949 James is listed as Woods but the daughter is listed as Wood. Miss Wood married Samuel F.(Irish for Phayre) Smith in 1884 or 1885. Their children applied for Social Security cards using her name spelled Wood. We know that James married a woman named Marie Lewis from the Channel Island of Guernsey. I suspect that she came as a child in a family making her birth about 1830 probably but not to much earlier. James A. was born in New York Because of the questions and the search you suggest I am resubmitting this query back to the main list for their consideration.
