I am also a transplanted (and homesick) soul with roots in all 5 boroughs, and in the neighboring counties. Everybody, when I was growing up said that they were going to the "city", meaning Manhattan. Someone going elsewhere in the municipality would say "I'm going to The Bronx, Brooklyn etc. I am not sure whether The City of New York is unique in the US in that there are 5 separate counties existing within one city government. By the way, true Brooklynites do indeed believe they are still a separate city. The real true Brooklynites still believe that the Dodgers are just on a VERY long road trip! Rodger "Dodger" Beyer
Thanks for the update on the Borough of Staten Island... I guess it's time for me to get a new almanac!! It just gets funner and funner!!!!! Here's a neat map on the formation of the counties: http://www.academic.marist.edu/ssp97/animated.htm Cheers!!! Larry

>And Staten Island???? ain't no such place.. Not quite true. The island was there about two weeks ago when I drove by <G>. Actually, Staten Island is the geographical name of the island and will remain that way until the end of time, like Cape Canaveral is still Cape Canaveral even though great efforts were made in the '60's to rename it Cape Kennedy. And the name of the borough on Staten Island is, if I'm not mistaken, the Borough of Staten Island today. For many years, until some time in the late '70's or early '80's it was the Borough and Richmond and the County of Richmond, but the residents developed such a complex about using the name Richmond, which most non-residents didn't recognize, including many other New Yorkers, that they changed the name to the Borough of Staten Island in the County of Richmond. This parallels the names used for Manhattan--the Borough of Manhattan, on Manhattan Island in the County of New York. Now does everyone have that straight. There'll be a test in the morning at 6:00 AM EDT and all who can remember, get to send an email to their NYC friends and gloat. Cheers, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania (in the Town of Warwick and County of Chester) (and an 18 year resident of Manhattan from 1960 through 1978.) I'll bet you can't find Elverson!
This may be a silly question, but could someone tell what exactly wills testators are? I am pretty new to genealogy and the list and would like to know how this would help someone in their search for their ancestors. I did go to the URL below but still not understanding it. Would like to benefit from these to if I can! Barb in Surrey BC -----Original Message----- From: Kelvin L. And as of about a year ago, the SI Ferry is FREE-FREE-FREE (for foot traffic). The bridge tolls are horrendous however, and you can no longer walk or bike over them as you could when I grew up there. >Can someone explain >the heiarchy for me. I mean what is the Bronx, Long Island, Queens etc.? Is >New York City a small area or does it include all of this? Sorry, >geographically challenged here. Yeah, NYC is like no place else. I only recently learned the details myself. At present (not always true), it consists of five boroughs, each in its own county. Manhattan is in New York County, and Manhattan by itself was also THE New York City for a while, so when you see a reference to NYC, it may mean the whole 5 boroughs, or it may just mean Manhattan. And if I remember this right, the Bronx is Bronx County, Brooklyn is Kings County, Queens is Queens County, and Staten Island is Richmond County. And I'm sure there's at least one NY-er out there who'll correct me if I'm wrong. Barb ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. But here's where it gets fun... The borough of Queens is Queens County, and that makes sense. "The" Bronx. Bronx borough that is, is Bronx County. so far so good. Now... The borough of Brooklyn is Kings County (Brooklyn used to be a separate city... Brooklynites think it still is.) The borough of Manhattan (on Manhattan Island)is New York County, thus, New York, New York. (If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere....) And Staten Island???? ain't no such place... Richmond Borough, Richmond County.... no wonder they want to secede from both the City AND the State. You can't there from here without paying a toll, on the ferry, or on the Verrazzano Bridge... unless you have a good boat or can swim. And Staten Island is right snug against Jersey. fun fun fun till her daddy took the atlas away. Larry

Hi Jo:) I'm an ex-nuuyawkah and also live in So Cal <g>. It is confusing, re NYC. All those places are "boroughs" There are five boroughs in all that comprise New York City......Manhattan being one of them, the others being the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens. Idiomatically, most people think of Manhattan only when someone mentions New York City. I'm sure there are others on this list who will be full of information about researching this area and that you'll be hearing from them! Hi List, This might be a real dumb question... Okay, talking with my mother-in-law the other day. I'm doing her geneology. She grew up in lower Manhattan, 9th and Greenwich streets. I tried looking to see what county this area is in...for the obvious, most info online and off is by county. I couldn't quite figure it out looking at the one map I have from the AAA, the county lines change colors too much. My mother in law says its not in a county, its just "Manhattan, New York". It has to be in a county, right? Some of the records I have from her just say Manhattan District court etc. I live in Southern Calif. I know nothing about New York. Can someone explain the heiarchy for me. I mean what is the Bronx, Long Island, Queens etc.? Is New York City a small area or does it include all of this? Sorry, geographically challenged here. Thanks so much, Jo Hartman researching Buchina, Cheselka, Vislocky, Mironick, Holovinsky
