Hello, could someone tell me what the address is for the New York State Museum that houses the archives for the Reformed Church of New Salem. Thank you very much. Marilyn reynolds@4-cities.com
Manhatten Borough is synonymous with New York County. References: EVERTON'S HANDYBOOK, 1999 Edition NEW YORK STATE AREA KEY 1979, by Florence Clint Mary A. That's great info, for me, Pat! I haven't yet gone to Nara in Laguna. I'm only about 30 minutes from there. I got spoiled by finding a contact already uploading a lot of info for Litmanova and Slovakia to his website, so in the process has posted pretty much all we need on MIL's mother's side, including New York census info on the immigrants, (I thank my lucky stars every day for this) And I found 3 live relatives on-line for Nebraska, FIL's side. I'll definitely subscribe to the New York City list. Must have missed it when I signed to New York State, because I was looking even for Manhattan etc. but do get bleary eyed at times. That list might be able to more specifically help with the unknown men and lost cousin we are looking for. I need to try another FHC. Went once to the Anaheim one when MIL was here at the end of June and couldn't make headway on anything. Their records on some things seemed old. I went to Cal State Fullerton, as I'm about a minute drive from it, but when I asked if they had the 1920 census they gave me crop reports. The research person acted completely blank about geneology at all, like she couldn't fathom anyone doing it or what it was, so it was kind of useless explaining, especially at that time I was newer at it. I plan on one day going to the local So. Cal. geneology branch, also in Huntington Beach, so I'm sure they can direct more of my searches too. Time to get off my comuter chair! Thanks, Jo
Can anybody tell me if there is an index for the Chicago Tribune in the year 1931 and if anyone has access to it, I need to find ref. to the death of Henry Witbeck. A few weeks ago we announced the new search engine for the Emigrant Savings Bank project located at http://www.genexchange.com/esb/. Entering search text in the Surname field would pull records from our database where either a surname, a relatives surname, or a word in the notes field matched the text. Due to request we have further tuned the search engine for the Emigrant Savings Bank project so that an alphabetical list of records can be generated by entering a single letter in the Surname field. By entering a single letter in the Surname search field all records where the surname begins with that letter will be displayed. Entering any more than a single letter will generate a query based on the rule I quoted above. This change gives the researcher the best of both worlds, and should make it much easier to locate that long lost emigrant you may be looking for. Any question or comments should be sent directly to Monica Bennett (Emigrant Savings Bank Project Coordinator) at esbaccounts@hotmail.com Warmest Regards, ----- Anthony Abby Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry - http://www.genexchange.com GenExchange FAQ page - http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm About the GenExchange - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm How can I help? - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteering.cfm
For years i've been tying to trace my fathers family. With the name Jones.....it was hard. I just got information that my gggrandfathers name was Peter Jones from Prussia. His son was William Jones born 1868 in buffalo NY. Peters wife's name was Elizabeth Borah from Switzerland. Peter came to the US before 1868. Where and how do I find out more information? Can anyone help? I'm so excited!!!! Linda NJ

My mother just received a letter, looks personalized, from a company called Genealogy Research Corporation in Huntington, NY. It asked if she was related to a certain couple of the same name as she, and their daughter, b. 1873. I understand it alluded to the settlement of an estate and heirs needed to be found. Has anyone had any experience/knowledge of this company? Katherine Pitts, Fayetteville, NY

No, you were right the first time. Prior to about 1973, Staten Island was the Borough of Richmond and also Richmond County. After that it is the Borough of Staten Island (but still remains Richmond County). (Prior to 1898 it wasn't part of New York City - not a Borough at all - just Richmond County). Jo, You asked... >what are areas like Flatbush and Harlem? Is that >like when we say Anaheim Hills even though technically there is no such >place or post office name. More or less except that Flatbush and Harlem acquired their names from the first Dutch settlers in the 17th century and are older than the name New York. Flatbush is now considered a section of Brooklyn and Harlem, of course, has for many years been considered the center of American Black culture with a population that is almost entirely black. Originally Harlem was a lush farming community located where Manhattan begins to narrow and is bounded on the east by the Harlem River, which is not really a river at all but a tidal estuary. Confused? Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
List members, I am looking for some information regarding Martinus Simon b. @ 1657 and Johan Wilhelm Simon b. @ 1677. Johan was baptised 9/21/1679 in Marktkirche, Germany. I am assuming that Marktkirche was somewhere very close to Neuwied in Germany. Does anyone know if Marktkirche is a town or a church or what is it? I did try to find it on several online maps with no success. Several sources agree that Johan Wilhelm Simon was from Neuwied/Heddesdorf previous to coming over during the Palatine migration in 1708 - 1709. I am looking for any resources to check to find Marktkirche. If it was a church there may still be records. If it was a town, what is it called now? Thanks for any assistance you may provide. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Garden/2734/pwhistory.html Wilson Simmons Jr. Town of Potter Historian Potter Center, NY
Re: the discussion about the intricacies of doing NYC research when you don't live there! First there is a good New York City maillist. I subscribe to GEN-NYC-D-request@rootsweb.com for the digest mode. Second, when I lived in southern California,I found great NYC resources. The National Archives in Laguna Niguel; many of the Family History Centers had microfilms in their permanent holdings so I didn't have to order copies. I also used the state university for ILL --the Sutro library has great stuff! For a modest fee, I had full library privileges. Now I am in Florida and it is actually more difficult to research NYC from here. HTH Pat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I recently purchased a copy of the "Early New York State Census Records 1663-1772". In this book there is a census for the township of Guilford in Cumberland County in the year 1772. My problem: I have found a Guilford Township in NY but I can find no record of their ever being a Cumberland Co in NY. There is however a Cumberland Co PA and Guilford Twp PA although Guilford Twp PA is not (nor ever was that I can determine) in Cumberland Co PA. Are you confused yet? How do I figure out if this particular census was actually in NY? Thank you, Barbara Freeman http://members.aol.com/saxbury
Stopped replying separately. Want to say thanks to all for the information. Very helpful, even though still a little clear as mud, as they say. Thanks for all the references to maps and other websites. It does make it more interesting and I'll have to look into New York's history more. Not to start over again, so what are areas like Flatbush and Harlem? Is that like when we say Anaheim Hills even though technically there is no such place or post office name. It just kind of became an identifier to the people living in the newer homes in the hills. Also, even though from lower Manhattan, my mother in law has that slight accent still that sounds like what people say is Bronx, but she never actually lived in the Bronx. Thanks, Jo
I believe that I made an error earlier and the borough of Richmond is also the county of Richmond which just happens to be on Staten Island Joan
Dear Jo, Manhattan is in New York County. There are five boroughs of New York City and there are also five counties of New York State that make up New York City. They are: the borough of Queens is also Queens County the borough of the Bronx is also Bronx County the borough of Manhattan is also New York County the borough of Brooklyn is also Kings County the borough of Staten Island is also Richmond County. Joan
