Ah, yes, while we're talking about Kings and Queens county, how about that lost province, Dukes county? Dukes county was once a part of NY and was run by the Mayhew family in what was considered a dictatorial manner, causing at least at one point, what was called the "Dutch Rebellion". This rebellion was put down from NY, but in the meantime, aid was sought from the province of Mass. Nothing every happened of the request and the Mayhews regained their stranglehold upon the county. 20 years later in 1692/3, the govt. of Mass. called for an election of "qualified" (landholders of minimum worth) elctors to send representation to Boston. Through a rather Byzantine process, the elections were held, representation was sent to Boston, Albany eventually acquiesced, and Dukes county NY became a part of Dukes county Mass. Otherwise known as Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands. Details of this story can be found in Banks' History of Martha's Vineyard Vol 1. Vern Hall:
I am looking for my Greatgrandfather James M. Forrest, born October 1,1840. I have his death certificate and all information is listed "unknown" I found a reference to a New York State Marriage in the Maritime Church in New York, the reference of the wedding of James Forrest and Freelove Westcott in 1838. I'm jumping at straws here thinking 1838 and 1840 might have some significance. Does anyone have any information on either party of of the Maritime Church? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks James M. Forrest forrest@localnet.com
I have to mention this as it is only happening on this list. Most references to websites do not seem to come through as linked (blue) within the text and still have the extra characters around them, so I have to copy/paste them to my Internet Explorer window. I have my email set as default to be plain text, so all my other lists are that way but URLs have shown linked okay still. Is this list just coming through differently? Do I have to change my settings? Hello, Does anyone know the following? I am looking for any clues regarding the family of: Nathan JONES, b. 1792 Rensselaer County NY, m. Esther BABCOCK, d. 3 Mar 1863 Oneida County NY. Nathan and Esther had at least one child, Betsey Emeline JONES (who married and divorced Joseph WELLS of Augusta, Oneida County NY). Esther's BABCOCK line is of the BABCOCKs of Westerly RI, and I strongly suspect that Nathan's is, too, as there was a Nathan JONES in Westerly RI the right age to be Nathan's father (or grandfather?). I just cannot make the connection. Can anyone help? Thank you, Carol Martin carolmorgain@earthlink.net

Cumberland County was part of NY for only a short period of time. Then it was ceded to Vermont. The map will show you. It also has a box for text which explains how the counties were formed.
