Saw a post on the list and decided to tell everyone about my experience. Last year sometime, I was looking over some info that some guy was posting on the net about Ireland, and he had names listed, etc., and if you send $2 a name, he would give you the whole listing of where, etc. Thankfully I only sent about $10 but I never heard anymore from Mr. Wonderful. In spite of repeated queries to his internet address, and my check was cashed, I never rec'd anything. I recently saw a posting that went on and on about researching, etc., and it seems the address was from somewhere here in the US. But then when I got to the very end of a rather long posting, there was his name. I've looked for the thing because I thought I had saved it, but can't locate it now. But I'm sure it's the same guy.And I believe his address was in Canada!! _____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Shirley, The community of South Worcester is in Otsego County. It lies in the southwestern corner of the Town of Worcester and lies on the north bank of Charlotte Creek which defines the boundary between Otsego and Delaware Counties. To further confuse the issue, Schoharie County's westernmost tip lies about a mile or a mile and a half due east. Someone who's records say they lived in South Worcester may well have actually lived in Schoharie or Delaware but gone to church in South Worcester. That's also probably why you got conflicting answers to your initial query. I hope this clarifies things for you. Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
Rootsweb town search shows it in Otsego County. Ron See My Surnames at: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Cabin/3752/ Have a nice day !

Thanks to all who responded to my question about a company called Genealogy Research Corporation, based in Huntington, NY. I wanted to let you know that, based on many of the responses I've received, the company appears to be legitimate. They do in fact look for 'lost' heirs who may be entitled to portions of estates. And there are other companies and individuals who legitimately do this work. HOWEVER, there are a lot of scammers out there whose only interest is your money, and it is wise to be wary of 'offers' like this. I think a big clue is whether or not they ask for money before they'll send you any info. The letter sent to my mother named the folks whose descendants they were looking for, and they did not ask for money -- only a response. (Unfortunately, we're not related to them!) Go to the SARA website and see what is available. There is quite a lot of material that you can search for on-line before you even get there. http://www.sara.nysed.gov/ Dick Hillenbrand Syracuse, NY ----- Original Message ----- From: Rene' Nilsson <amoeba@adelphia.net> To: <GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 02, 1999 12:29 AM Subject: Question about researching at NYS archives > Hi, > > I'm hoping to have a little time to do some research in Albany next week. > Can anyone tell me how the records are organized at the NYS Archives? If you're asking about vital record indexes, they're maintained on microfiche and organized alphabetically by year. (On separate sets for births, marriages, and deaths.) Searching them is usually pretty quick, even over a span of years. If you run out of time in Albany, the National Archives Regional Branch in Manhattan, corner of Varick and Houston streets, has another set of the same microfiche indexes as the NYS Archives in Albany. Hi, I'm hoping to have a little time to do some research in Albany next week. Can anyone tell me how the records are organized at the NYS Archives? Is there any sort of name index, or are records organized just by date? If there are name indexes, do I need to search year by year? I have *no* idea how this is set up. I won't have much time, we're just passing through on our way to NYC, so I might have a few hours. Anything I should know before heading there? I'd just kind of like to know what to expect. :) Thanks, Rene' amoeba@adelphia.net

Several people pointed out that the Captain of the Titanic was also named Smith. After some searching, I found that his name was indeed Edward J. Smith - so he probably was the same man as Commander E. J. Smith of the Celtic in 1889. I never would have made the connection. Thanks for pointing it out!
I have transcribed a "Saloon Passenger List" for a trip to Europe taken by my great grandmother, Mrs. Donna R. Cole of San Francisco, in 1889. It is formally printed on heavy cream stock, with artistic renditions of steamships and sailing vessels on the covers, and the passenger list inside. Donna Cole has written hilarious notes next to many of the names giving her opinions of said persons, both positive and otherwise... Her notes also give the nationality of several of the names. If anyone is interested in a name, I'll provide her comments. Also, is this akin to a list of the first class passengers? I'm assuming it is a class of passengers allowed into special lounges. Does anyone recognize any of these people? WHITE STAR LINE UNITED STATES AND ROYAL MAIL STEAMERS ISMAY, IMRIE & CO.
