    1. Re: GEN-NYS-D Digest V99 #123
    2. Hello: I'm new to the NY list and have a quick question. I sent away to the State of NY for a copy of a marriage license in April. I've noticed that they have cashed my check, however, I have not received anything from them about the inquiry. Can anyone advise if this is typical for the State of NY, shall I be more patient, or will it do any good to write them again? Thanks.... Kathy McKellep-Lathrop So. California

    3. They're online now and have up the database for the Wall of Honor. (These are not original records, but family info contributed by individuals who have paid the fee to have their ancestor's name(s) inscribed on the wall.) See: http://www.wallofhonor.com/ You are probably referring to the joint project whereby volunteers at Family History Centers are extracting the names from Passenger Lists of vessels arriving at New York during the period of operation of Ellis Island (beginning approx 1892). Although scheduled for completion in 2000, remember that this is a volunteer operation so don't hold your breath. (Additional volunteers and of course donations are always welcome.) For general info, see: http://www.ellisisland.org/ (The website http://Ellisisland.com/ is sponsored by the concessioneer which runs the gift shop on Ellis Island). 3. Hi, Does anyone have access to NY City directories from the early 1900s or the state census for 1915? I'm looking for Samuel and/or Merrie LOWENTHAL in about 1915-1918. I believe Samuel died around 1917-18 and Merrie was in Bronx in 1920 but I can't find them in 1910 (not indexed). Thank you very much! Debi

    3. There are passenger lists for ship arrivals at New York over the entire period during which Castle Garden was in service as an immigrant ststion, but beyond that there are no specific Castle Garden records known to exist. Castle Garden was originally established by NY State as an orientation center for immigrants, to try to keep them from being ripped off by the many shady characters who frequented the NYC piers for that purpose. It's not clear whether any records of immigrants were ever kept at Castle Garden, or whether the records were transferred to Ellis Island and perished in the great fire there in 1896. Or, since this was a NY State and not a Federal operation, whether the records might have perished in the great Capitol file in Albany in 1911. Regards, Charles Sullivan "Kelvin L. 1. Re: Ships lists
    2. Charles Sullivan
    3. Passenger lists of ships arriving at New York during this period are available on microfilm published by the National Archives as Series M237. See their online microfilm catalog at http://www.nara.gov/genealogy for the correct roll number for this date. Check a few days before and after the nominal date - the official date of arrival is usually different than the day the passengers stepped off the boat. You may be able to borrow this film via Interlibrary Loan at a public library. If not, you can rent it at a local Family History Center (they will have their own catalog number for it).
