Does anybody have access to the 1865 census for Amenia, Dutchess County, that they could do a look up for me? Cynthia clwhitford@msn.com
I have heard this before, but love to hear it every so often, to remind myself that I'm not alone having problems in my research! A little humor sure helps to ease the frustration sometimes! I'm sure we all have at least a couple examples we could add to this list (it would be interesting to hear some others sometime!). My favorites from my own experiences are: In the Genealogy of the line you are researching, the author(s) wasn't sure if the progenitor of your branch of the family even existed. You just discover that a relative, who lives in the old family homestead, has the big family Bible. The house burns to the ground (Bible inside) before you can get there. Here's another that I almost forgot: You are informed by a cousin that years ago, in a divorce settlement, his ex-wife (who by now has been remarried 3 or 4 more times and could care less about the family), took the old chest of old family pictures and memorabilia. She gave them to her children to play with. Sorry if this post isn't of any real genealogical help to anyone, but I couldn't resist! Karen Brisley

Searching for any information on the surname WIETING in the late 18th, early 19th century. I have only seven references to this surname: 1. Rev. Johann Christoph Wieting pastor St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Minden, Montgomery Co., NY - perhaps beginning in 1804. He md. Maria Magdalena Beyan, and died 17 Feb 1817. (ref: church records). 2. Rev. John Christopher Wieting pastor of "The old Geisenberg German Lutheran Church located near Hallsville, N.Y." (ref: Herkimer Co. rootsweb site) 3. Rev. John Charles Wieting (1757-1817), and son (4.) Rev. Philip of Janesville, or Hyndsville, Schoharie County, NY. (ref: another researcher, RAD) 5. Johann Henrich Wieting and his wife Maria were having children baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church at Fort Plain, Montgomery Co., NY around 1820. (ref: church records) 6. Johann Martin Christian Wieting b. 1832 Germany, came to US 1854 and went "straight" to Wolcottsville, Erie Co., NY "where there were other WIETING's residing from much earlier". (ref: another researcher, WWL) 7. The 1867 will of George Lighthall refers to Jacob Wieting neighbor in Minden, Montgomery Co., NY. (ref: Herkimer Co. rootsweb site) References 1, 2 and (maybe) 3 are likely the same person, but I don't know how the others tie in and that's all the data I have. Any additional references or tidbits would be greatly appreciated. Ed Harrison EJHarrison@compuserve.com
>Has anyone heard of a town in NY called Cohvis? It is in an entry dated >1980. Thanks, Linda Linda, I'm not aware of any town colled Cohvis nor can I find one in any atlas or gazetteer. Perhaps the town is simply a misreading of a handwritten Cohoes. Cohoes is a village in the Town of Colonie in Albany County and lies on the south bank of the Mohawk River where it empties into the Hudson. Is that location consistent with the other information you have? Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
I am looking for anyone that might have a clue as to what happened to my grandmother. She was born as Rita Margaret Carney in 1918 to James Carney and Agnes Swift. The family originated from County Mayo Ireland, but I have records that say Rita wwas born in NY, although they do not say where in NY. She was living with her uncle John Bannon in 1936, in the Bronx of NY on Bergen Av., her last known address was 856 Cauldwell Av. Bronx in 1941. She seemed to have dissapeared into thin air, and I can't find anyone that knows anything or that is willing to talk about her. My grandfather died last year and took with him any information that would have helped me. I know someone out there knows these names, maybe, Rita was known as Margaret Carney, she could have been someone's Nanny or housekeeper. Please think and ask around, I'm at my wits end, and have such little information, all I do have is determination. Thank-you, Connie in FL
Has anyone heard of a town in NY called Cohvis? It is in an entry dated 1980. Thanks, Linda

It's unfortunate that so many FHCs have such inexperienced volunteers. The correct answer would have been to direct your cousin to the Locality Catalog, either on the computer (if they have one) or on microfiche. The passenger lists are catalogged under "NEW YORK, NEW YORK (CITY) - EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION". The Locality Catalog can now also be accessed online at http://www.familysearch.org however it may be difficult to get in (or stay in) because of the heavy usage. One can also look up the National Archives film numbers at: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy then at the FHC look in their Author Catalog under National Archives to get the cross-reference to the FHL film number. Hi, I've had a couple people mention Penn Yan to me, where is it?? Marge
Hello to all on the list. My name is Rod Dalton and I have a special request to make. I am trying to find my ancestor, Thomas DALTON and his family. Thomas DALTON was born in Pembrey, Wales in 1732 and came to America something between 1754 and 1760. He married a Polly Freeland and their children were; John, James, Charles and Polly DALTON Is there anyone who will do look-ups for me in your County. Please contact me if you have any information on this Dalton Surname. Thanks and Regards Rod Dalton
Can I ask a stupid question here? Why am I receiving the exact same posts on two lists? Or all three or four? (Brooklyn, Queens, NYC and NYS) Is this the intention of the sender or is there some link that re-posts from one list to another automatically that I am unaware of? In any event, it's getting a bit out of control. I suggest that if it is a "sender" oriented situation, that you post to one list first and if you don't get a response, THEN post to the other list. Many of us are on the Brooklyn and NYC lists, not to mention the NYS and Queens lists. And, yes, I know how to use my "delete" key. That's not the point. The point is "patience." And that means more than 24 hours. Give one list the chance to answer. Exhibit a little bit of patience if you want a decent and correct answer. Don't flood us on all lists. Most of us who've been around here for awhile are more than willing to help. But, when I see three and four copies of the same post, THEN I usually WILL DELETE. All of them. This is sheer self defense. So, please, be patient and considerate and post to the appropriate list first and then widen your inquiry if you have to. The answer may be that people aren't ignoring you, but no one knows the answer! If we don't, and you do the research, we'd all love to know the answer... If this is somehow a list-to-list re-post issue, to each of the list owners: is there someway to (by comparing subscriptions) block multiple list subscribers from duplicates/triplicates, etc. posts? I highly doubt this is the cause/situation, but I'm keeping an open mind here... I thank you in advance for your consideration. Best regards. Nancy. I was told by the Kelly family that Samuel Kelly b1899 had descendants that lived in Philadelphia, Jefferson County, NY. Probably cousins to Samuel. Anyone know of this family Thanks Carole Kelly
Hi. I was hoping there is someone out there who could do a lookup for me on Charles A. HUGHES and his wife Lillian in the Buffalo city directories. They lived in Buffalo between 1909 and 1919. I have had a hard time trying to find them. I couldn't find them in the 1910 or 1920 census. I was told they had 8 or 9 children but I only know of 4. Richard b. 1905, Anthony b. 1909, Amelia b. 1914 and Gertrude b. 1919. Charles's wife's maiden name was GRAY and she came from Ohio. The family went to St. Joachims Catholic church but the church seems to have disappered. I am just getting started on this and have run out of ideas. Any info or help would be welcome. Jean
Searching for any Kelly's that lived in and around Watertown in the early 1900's that may be related to a Benjamin b.1826 who had a son named Andrew b.1865 who married a Susan Parks. Susan Kelly drowned or died at Watertown on February 13, 1922 at the age of 57.. she is buried in Napanee Ontario, Lennox+ACY-Addingtion County.
