Michael, I respect your civil war knowledge and appreciate the very informative postings that you submit. I wonder, if your ancestor was a civil war vet, if you have thought to check for a death certificate in Schuyler Co.? Many of the vets went to the retirement home in Bath, NY. In answer to your question about a certificate being lacking fo 1905, my confidence of a vital record being avilable starts at about the WW I period. My dad was born at home in 1906 and he never had a birth certificate. We had to go to church confirmation records and census documents to get a social secuirty number for him. The official law started in 1880 but I have found that many people did not comply in the early years. Best regards. My ggg Grandfather, Joel DAVIS died in Horseheads, Chemung Co. NY between 1900 and 1905, I know this because he was listed in the 1900 federal census at age 85 and in the 1905 NYS census he is not in the household and his surviving wife, Matilda POWELL DAVIS wife was head. There is no information in the vital records death certificate index at Albany for his death, at least not that I could find, and I looked for every year surrounding the period of his death and there were no Joel DAVIS' which would have been him. I know that some of the index fishe are missing for some surnames for certain years, but I don't believe that this was a problem in my case. I am writing to the vital records office in Elmira in the hope that they may have a death certificate for my Joel DAVIS that was not indexed. My questionis, has anyone else has this happen? I know that initial compliance with the death certificate law was quite spotty from, say 1880 - 1885, or so, but compliance with the death certificate requirement should have been near 100% by 1900 and that is why I am perplexed at why there seems to be no death dertificate for my ggg Grandfather. Any help/info/suggestions would be appreciated. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ
Rooters and Cynthia, I don't know if anyone suggested the following alternatives on finding your NY Civil War ancestors,... but here are some sources. If you are ever in Albany NY, there are muster rolls on film listed by last name, ... go to the archives on the 11th floor of the library building. These will also be on-line soon, through the efforts of the National Parks service and the LDS church. Look for annoucements on this project to bring all Civil War service men rosters to the Web,... I believe it may happen by the end of the year? Also, there is the NY adjutant Generals report, but this is more difficult I believe for somone who does not know the Regiment number. I believe that is how the report is organized, and you would have to know the various regiments organized from the area where your ancestor lived, then consult the report. There was at least one Civil War veterans "census", I believe the one I am familiar with was in 1890? There is very little info given, but it may helpp you,... I believe that information is oganized by county and is on film. I recently discovered volumes of Pension file abstracts? The NYPL has a multi volume set of Civil War service men organized by service man's last name, and I found this very useful. Also there are several places on the web where you can request information from people who have an interest in a particular regiment, but again, this may not be useful, until you know the regiment number of your ancestor, but this could help to provide service information. There are various mail list, including the one that I administer, the NY Miliatry list. Volume is rather low, but the list is indexed so may subscribe and post a query and then unsubscribe, knowing that your post will be there for posterity. To subscribe to the NY Military mail list, send a message with only the single word subscribe to NY-Military-L-request@rootsweb.com There are also several sources in NY GenWeb, there is the page that I maintain at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyontari/military.htm with links and info and there are several other outstanding sites but most are mainly organized by regiment number. Once you find which Regiment your ancestor belonged to, or have a good idea, you may request pension and service records from the national archives. There is info on this at the web site above. Best of luck on your search and have fun. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ >Does anybody have any idea how I can find out if a man enlisted in the >Civil War in New York? >Cynthia

NY Rooters, I recently discovered my ggg Grandparents, Thomas DRAKE and Catherine COLE, who were from Orange Co. ca. early 1800s. Thomas died before the 1850 census, I believe and his wife survived him and moved to the Chemung Co., area. Their daughter Hattie Mae DRAKE married Nathan DAVIS of Horseheads, Chemung Co. and they are my gg Grandparents. I would like to find more info on their parents and families,... if anyone has info., I would appreciate it. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ
NY Rooters, I recently discovered my ggg Grandparents, David STEADMAN and his wife Sarah, who was born in Cayuga Co. I know that they were in Jefferson Co. at some point, as their daughter Susan's birth place is listed as Jefferson Co., but they may also have been in Steuben Co., soon after that, the time frame would have been about 1830s. They may also have lived in Ohio. I would like to find more info on their parents and families,... if anyone has info., I would appreciate it. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ
NY Rooters, I recently discovered my ggg Grandparents, Clark EVERETT and Sarah BORDEN from Steuben Co. I can find very little information on them, and I wonder if they may have left the state soon after their daughter Jenny married Isaac Rapalee WHEATON in Cohocton NY. Jenny died ca. 1895. I would like to find more info on their parents and families,... if anyone has info., I would appreciate it. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ

I have just been informed the name should be: Guardian Angel Home, in Brooklyn, NY. Any help greatly appreciated! Janice
Can anyone help me, help a friend. Is this home still in existence? If so, are they open to someone trying to locate birth parents or where to start? This person was born in Italy in 1958 and came to the U.S. 4 July 1959 and placed in the Angel Guardian Home where he was adopted. There was an attorney involved. This person knows his birth place in Italy, has his passport and naturalization papers as well as his birth name. Can someone with expertise in this area please let me know how to help him progress. He efforts by an agency years ago put him off stating the records in Italy were "spotty". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Janice

I am researching Johann Christoph WIETING who came to colonial New York as a soldier (mercenary?) in the English Army. He was captured at Saratoga in 1777 and settled in the US after the Revolution. Maybe someone can answer one or more of the following questions: 1. Is there an Internet Mailing List for Revolutionary War topics only? 2. Am I correct in assuming that the term "Loyalist" applies only to colonists who remained loyal to the Crown, or would a "regular" Army soldier also be considered a "Loyalist"? 3. Any ideas how to find records on captives taken by the Americans during the Revolution? 4. Any ideas how to find records on soldiers in the English Army at the time of the Revolution? Any suggestions appreciated. Ed Harrison EJHarrison@compuserve.com
Hello Fellow Researchers, I wonder if anyone out there knows the names or locations of Methodist Churches in Columbia and Rensselaer Counties, specifically those which date back to 1770 (for Columbia) 1800-1805 (for Rensselaer). I suspect that my ancestor, Robert Washburn may well have been a Methodist Minister. I do not know for certain that he was, but in an article I read, "Whose name in October 1760, appeared among certain inhabitants of the Town of Plainfield, in Windham County, CT, desiring to form a new religious society." I know that between 1773-1776 he had left Plainfield, CT and moved to Columbia County, NY. I also know that between 1786-1831 he was living in Saratoga County. I would appreciate any suggestions or information that might help me in finding records for this person. Thank you.
