Hi I just learned the maiden name of my gr grandmother was Rothrock. Her name was Carlotta Rothrock. she married Newton Donovan I'm usure of marriage date so I can't look for a marriage record, but my gr-grandfather was born in 1882. So it is in that era I'm looking. I don't even know where to begin with this one. I don't know when, where, or how she died either. Anyone else out ther looking for Rothrock? A relative has said she was possibly from New York. My grandmother Florence Donovan was born in Elizabeth NJ in 1914. so I'm guessing they might have been from near there Can anyone suggest an area to begin searching Census records? This is a total shot in the dark. Anyone have any other suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks, Kitty

Saratoga County even printed theirs in The Saratoga, by towns , over several issues. Chautauqua County has been indexed and available at various repositories around the county and for sale at Fenton Historical Society, 67 Washington St., Jamestown, NY 14701. You can by one town or all of the census. Write to ask for price list.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where or what I could use to take out the names of my family before I upload them to my web site. I have a GEDCOM program and that isn't the problem. I just wanted to remove the members of my family that are still living. I remember someone talking about this one time on a list but not sure what the name of the program was. I only remember that there were two of them. Thanks ever so much for any help anyone could give me. -- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/2740/ -- My Surnames: Asher, Barner, Condry, Conrad, English/Inglis/Inglish, Freeman, Grady/O'Grady, Holt, McInnis/Innis/Innes, Ruiz/Ruis, Shafer/Shaeffer/Schaefer, Watkins, Wentworth.

Hi, Is there an index to the NY state census in 1855? If so, where can I find one? Denise DennieXYZ@aol.com
This is from the help file in the software, I hope it allowed to post it here: Civil War Muster Rolls or certificates were produced roughly between 1861 and 1865 in order to keep track of a soldier, his rank, unit, equipment, and pension benefits. The original rolls consist of the actual cards soldiers completed and filed with their headquarters. The Civil War Muster Rolls were first compiled on microfilm by the National Archives to assist researchers in their efforts to investigate those who served in the civil war. The database presented in Generations Research Center was created from this same collection of microfilm. It is the largest known electronic collection of those who served in the war and we are proud to play a part in making it readily accessible for the first time to so many people. Users should understand, however, that this is not a complete database of all those who served in the civil war. Most of the records here deal with enlisted men and do not cover high ranking officers (see the Union Generals or Confederate Generals databases in the Historic Records for information on these and other high ranking officers.) I can tell you that he got traded from the Portland Trailblazers about a month ago. He should be in Atlanta now. HA! Sorry about that- just could not help myself! I'm a big basketball fan and Isiah or "JR" as he is also known, has quite a reputation so many will not miss him here. Good luck to the Atlanta Hawks! Or how complete it claims to be? And for those who think they had an ancestor in the civil war who either doesn't appear on a unit's 'muster roll', remember that they still might have served. Of the 3 CW soldiers who service I've looked at in detail, only one appears on a muster 'in' roll , and none are on the muster out rolls. Hi Michael, In your Davis research have you come across: Sarah Davis married (1744) Thomas Vail (29jun1720-26may1807) ? *Any* help on Davis would be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks!
Does anyone have information about Isiah Ryder, born 1799 probably somewhere in NY? He was married to Mary Dunham in Clarimont County OH in 1820 or so and moved to Morris, IL where he died in 1852. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks!
Mike, There are a few other options: He might have had to go to a sanitorium, Either for health or mental reasons. He might have abandoned the family or divorced. He might have been on a trip when he died. Check the local cemetery's or for an obit in the paper.. Just some ideas.. Cyd Rawls
Good point, Rich. Note that Bath is in Steuben County, not Schuyler. Write to the county clerk there. There is a CD that came with Sierra's Generations Grande Suite genealogy program that is the Civil War Muster Rolls. It tells you what unit the person served with and whether he was Union or Confederate. Judi Boniface Herkimer, NY boniface@dreamscape.com
I guess I deleted too quickly and missed the original query. The 1890 Veterans census is indeed organized by county, but there is no reason you cannot apply for the veteran's military and pension record. The NARA form (NATF 80) only requires the state from which he enlisted., not the regiment. Just FYI, the only REQUIRED items on the form are NAME, BRANCH OF SERVICE, STATE FROM WHICH HE SERVED, WAR, UNION OR CONFEDERATE. . . all of which you know. Since there's no charge for the search, it's certainly worth a try. The fee is $10 if they find something, nothing if they don't. I would send in two forms - one for the military record and one for the pension (although the pension record usually covers both) if you're in a hurry. However, it's important to indicate that you want the whole file, since the $10 only covers a certain number of photocopies. If there is more material than the minimum, they will give you the price for the additional copies before they make them. The only hitch in your case may be that there are too many soldiers from New York named Joel DAVIS. I ran into that with my John THOMAS. However, that is the only failure I've ever had. If you have a death date or know where he lived/died after the war (these are non-essential blanks to fill in) or his widow's name, that would certainly help narrow down the search. But that information is not required. Up to six copies of form NATF 80 are available from the National Archives at inquire@nara2.gov. Just give them your mailing address and you'll have the forms in a couple of weeks. The search itself takes several weeks, so be patient. You will get an answer, even if it's negative.
