    1. FONDA NY need hours and days open etc.
    2. Hello Fellowlisters, I will be researching the NY state area soon and I am wondering if someone could send me the information about the records in Fonda and where it is located etc. Are there usually any volunteer helpers on site. Don't want them to actually do anything but maybe be able to save us time knowing where whatever records might be available. If someone reading this can post what is available etc and a little about their experiences I would appreciate that too. Thank you in advance] Sharon

    1. Servants
    2. quillpen
    3. Hi Everyone, My question pertains to both Genealogy and History (don't they all?). In Colonial New York State, was the title "servant" always used in reference to an indentured servant, i.e. someone who was "working off" his or her passage, or did it also pertain to an employee, such as a manservant? My 7x-g-grandfather is listed as a servant when testifying at a coroner's inquest re the drowning death of his MASTER in 1681 Westchester County, NY. It's the word Master that throws me here. Servants in people's homes in twentieth century America have employers, not masters, because they are non-indentured. If my ancestor was indentured for passage, then he should be on a ships list shortly before 1681 as an immigrant to this country. I haven't found him. If he were just an employee, then he could have been in America for quite some time before coming to Westchester. I don't know at this point in which direction to go. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Maureen

    1. SEELYE AND STARBUCKS
    2. Hi Everyone; On my recent cemetery walkings in Glens Falls Cemetery in Warren Co. N.Y. I found my great Aunt Jessie Longdo Starbuck as you see below the plot is a big one and genealogy speaking a big find for me. My Question is how are the SEELYE'S connected to the STARBUCKS?????????? Aunt Jessie and her husband never had any children, she was a stately lady and years ago when my son now 29 was a baby he would craw to her and pull himself up to where she was sitting. She really thought he was the strongest baby she ever saw. Deanna LaVoy-Lewis STARBUCK PLOT Jessie Starbuck 1887-1978 Harris P. 3. Thank you to everyone who responded with helpful information on death certificates. I was wrong when I posted the message, about Joel DAVIS not being in the index at Albany. Apparently, he was there, and I requested his death certificate, because it came in the mail yesterday. His father was William DAVIS of Warwick, Orange Co. Joel was born in 1814. See the info in the DAVIS post, if you are interested. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com.

    1. Question for Rootsweb list users
    2. Is it possible to post a message on a list to which one is not subscribed? I have posted often on lists for which I have subscribed. This morning I sent a message to the CT list, but did not get a confirmation of my posting, which I believe is standard practice on rootsweb lists. I actually thought I was subscribed to the CT list, because occasionally I thought I remembered getting messages from that list. I guess this is just another "senior moment." 1. RE: 1855 State Census Index
    2. Mark Waldron
    3. No, unfortunately there is no index for 1855 that I know of (yet). You need to know where your ancestor lived in 1855, from maps identify the appropriate enumeration district, and then search that district's census records line by line. 1. vital records are not in NY counties
    2. Mabry Benson
    3. New York counties do not keep vital records. The clerk of the town, village, or city in which the event took place records the event and sends a copy to Albany. So when looking for a vital record, it does no good to write the county clerk. You have to know the exact town, village, or city and write that clerk. This one of the big pains of NY research. I clearly found this out when looking for a death certificate in the town of Mexico offices, when they told me to go a block away and try the village of Mexico. That is why people endure the exceedingly long wait for Albany to look in the indexes. Some town & village clerks will kindly look and see if a record is there without charging. Mabry Benson

    3. I am trying to find information on my grandma's uncle Giuseppe LaRocca and his family. When my grandma came to the U.S. on April 3, 1909 she went to stay with her mother's brother in Brooklyn. I have the passenger list which states Giuseppe LaRocca as the person she was going to see. It is really hard to read the address because it looks as if it was written over. The address looks like 211 Johns St. or Johnson St. All I know about Giuseppe, who was probably called Joseph in the states, was that he was born around 1863. I believe he was born in Castelvetrano, Trapani, Sicily where his sister Rosaria (called Sarah) was born. He probably lived in Campobello di Mazara, Trapani, Sicily where many of his family later moved to. It is only a few miles from Castelvetrano. His parents names were Giovanni LaRocca and Rosa Costa. If he married, and had a son, he most likely named him Giovanni or John after his father. It is also possible that he had a daughter named Rosa after his mother. His siblings were: Antonino who married Antoinette Montalbano and whose family moved to St. Louis, Rosaria (Sarah, my great-grandma) who married Calogero Montalbano and whose family moved to St. Louis, Lorenza who married Lorenzo Montalbano (whose family stayed in Campobello di Mazara), Giovanni who married Antonina Di Prima (and possibly stayed in Campobello), and Giuseppa who died in Campobello when she was 3. My grandma came to live with him in Apr of 1909 but I am not sure how long she stayed because by April of 1911 she married my grandpa Giovanni Rocca (no relation) who was originally from Partinico, Palermo, Sicily and wound up in of St. Louis. My grandma's name was Caterina Montalbano. If anyone can help me or provide suggestions on how to find information about his family I would really appreciate it. I am not sure how to go about finding him in the 1910 census (if there was a 1910 in Brooklyn). Also, recently there was an article in the New York Times about a Sarah LaRocca who teaches Tango dancing at a place called Stepping Out, a dance studio in midtown. This intrigued me since my great-grandmother was Sarah (Rosaria) LaRocca. I think the article said she was originally from Washington. I was wondering how to possibly get in touch with her. Thanks, Kathy kgreifzu@att.net
