However all along the way some people forget that this resource is here. I am sending this on "again" to the whole list too. Actually I do like to help out in your searches so I would like to remind people that rootsweb.com has all our messges to the list archived and they are available. If I refer to your future questions with a simple refer to the archives would you think of me as a terrible person trying to make someone think for themselves? So this following is one way of connecting with others who may be looking into a specific name rather than a general surname. I snipped and pasted to give this to you however all you need is there even if it reads a little strange. <SNIP>another resource for locating cemeteries and the graves in them is: "NColeman", ncroots@worldnet.att.net. Second Comment on Cemeteries New York is an explanation in general of this subject. Nancy Coleman wrote: I keep seeing requests for phone numbers and addresses for New York City cemeteries. All NYC and Long Island cemeteries are online in a Cemetery Directory on the GenExchange: www.genexchange.com/NY/index.cfm Here is how to get to where you want to go on this URL: 1. At the top of the page, click on "Directories. 2. At the next page, click on "Cemeteries. 3. At the Cemetery Directory page, select the county you are interested in (Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk or any other). 4. Click on "submit. All of the cemeteries in that county will come up on your screen. Scroll down. 5. When you find the cemetery you are interested in, click on it. All of the details of that cemetery will come up on your screen. If you aren't sure where a cemetery is located, but you know its name, type in its name (without a county selected) and it should come up. If you aren't familiar with NYC geography, I suggest you browse both the Queens County and Kings County cemeteries to find what you are looking for. In addition to the aforementioned directory (and many others), there is a Burial Index. 1. At the top of the page, click on "Searchable Databases. 2. Scroll down and click on "Burial/Cemetery Index. 3. Scroll down and type in the surname you are looking for. Also, if the name is common, select a county. 4. All the burials that have been entered to date for that surname will come up. If you don't find a burial for your particular surname it is probably because the data hasn't been entered yet. This is a volunteer effort. The large, commercial, cemeteries have entries only by those who know that their loved ones are buried there. Some of the older, more historic cemeteries on Long Island have been entered in their entirety based on site visits, historical documents, historical/prior inventories, family papers/deeds, etc. This is an ongoing project with many dedicated volunteers who are, themselves, historians, teachers, or professional genealogists. All sources and LDS numbers, if available, are cited. In addition to the Cemetery Directory and the Burial the GenExchange has many other databases that are being worked on continuously: 1. Emigrant Savings Bank Records 2. US Census Records 3. Births 4. Baptisms 5. Death Records 6. Obituaries 7. Church Records 8. Yearbooks 9. Civil War Regiments 10. Historical Accounts/Biographies Signed Best regards. I haven't had any problem obtaining death records from the NYC Municipal Archives. Of course, they want to know your relationship to the deceased and the purpose, which in my case was genealogy. I can understand this, as death records are pretty personal. If you are talking about a certified copy of a death certificate than it becomes more difficult and understandably so. These have to be obtained at the Dept of Health and are limited as to the year. Check out the NYC Municipal Archives if that is where your interest lies. Other archives may have different rules but I have dealt with Illinois and had no problem there either. For the NYCMA go to the following where printable forms are available: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/serdir/html/xdoris01.html Eileen
Hi Deanna, In response to your "wondering" email, your thoughts seem so sensible--I "wonder" what it would take to make them happen! I am amazed, having worked in the business world for years, at the lack of "businesslike" procedures in some of this genealogy world we love to visit! I share your frustration at the requirements that keep information from being readily available to researchers. It's kind of amazing; because of the Freedom of Information Act, the Social Security Administration releases personal information about people who died just a few months ago with social security numbers; however, the death records of those same people can't be released for 50 + years to the general public! Perhaps there is a solution that we just haven't thought of yet--like, each of us volunteering a few hours each month at a local facility to transcribe records into a format that would be Internet friendly! I'm sure open to suggestion! Then they would be losing lots of money :0)
Its good to remember that we are vouunteers working on the extraction programs and every FHC welcomes any help that is given. Many people who donate time to the centers are not LDS but just people who want to help the good work move along as they put their shoulders to the wheel. If you can spare a few hours a week, you can be instrumental in helping to get this work done. Peggee
I believe my WHITING family may have been German Palatines from the Columbia Co., area, originally. All I know for certain (and it isn''t much) is that Rachel WHITING, b. ca. 1821 in Schoharie Co. NY d., 29 Sept 1907 and Elijah DRAKE, b. ca. 1821 and d. 12 May 1889 were my ggg Grandparents and Rachels, parents were Peter WHITING and Elizabeth PALMENTEER. Peter was born ca. 1788 in Montgomery Co. and died in Steuben Co. Nov. 1859 and is buried in the Ingleside Cemetery. Elizabeth PALMENTEER was b. ca. 1795 in Ulster Co, NY and died 14 Apr. 1866 in Rikers Hollow, Steuben Co., NY. Look forward to sharing information on these families. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com
There is a project underway by the Family History Library to extract the publicly accessible NYC Birth records, at least for Manhattan. The last I heard the volunteers were told to put this on the back burner until the NY Passenger List extraction for Ellis Island was completed. Many of the later indexes for NYC appear to have already been computerized by the NY City Dept of Health - at least when you request your birth certificate from them you get a computer printout. Whether or not they will ever make this available to the public is questionable. The probability of the records or indexes for NY State outside NY City ever being extracted is next to zero - there are only two places where the indexes are available to the public: in Albany and at NARA in Manhattan. If the NY State Dept of Health ever agrees to allow the indexes or any actual records to be filmed by the FHL, then perhaps it will be a different story. To All; I will be in Eng/Ire the 6th - 24th, so if I'm on your list, can you unsubscribe me for that period. It's hell to face 4 screens of e-mail when you return Bob
Hi All; I was wondering if (a big IF) the New York Archives will ever put the death, birth index on-line. It would save us a heck of a lot of time and also save them a lot of time from people writing in and they have to look up the index numbers themselves. It would save all a lot of time and work. The Town of Redhouse lies within Cattaraugus County. The Town of Salamanca lies to the north, the Towns of Elko and Carrollton to the west and east respectively and the State of Pennsylvania to the south. The Allegheny River runs through the northeast corner and most of the town if not all lies within Allegany State Park (yes those are the correct spellings for the Allegheny River and Allegany State Park. Best regards, Kelvin L. Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania
Redhouse is in Alleganey State Park and it is where the Park headquarters are located. It is about 20 miles from the PA border and is near Salamanca, NY. You should be able to find it on a NY map. It is below and slightly East of Buffalo, NY. Ralph Avon, NY

My questions: 1. What geographic area of NY did Corlis HINDS represent in 1809 & 1811? 2. Where did he live prior to and after the time of his office? 3. Where/When was Corlis HINDS born? died? Any info of his parents? 4. What was his profession or occupation before taking office? 5. Were elections held in both 1809 and 1811? or did Corlis succeed someone else mid-term, like he himself was succeeded in Feb. 1812? Was mid-term succession by appointmemt or in a by-election in this time period. 6. Why and when did Corlis HINDS leave office? ========================================= My research into Corlis HINDS has yielded up the information below: (sources cited below were obtained by another researcher and not by me -- so please do not ask me about anything these sources -- they are provided in the hope that they might assist someone who reads this email request and has access to these or other policical resources that might answer my questions). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Corlis HINDS served in the N.Y. State Assembly as a Republican. He voted in favor of banks, when he did not abstain, 71% of the time. source: Journal of the N.Y. Assembly. He served in 1809 and 1811, but he was succeeded for reasons unknown on 4 Feb. 1812 by William Hunter, a Federalist. source: S.C. Hutchins, "Civil List and Forms of Government of the Colony and State of New York" (Albany: 1869). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> My genealogical research into the HINDS family of early Jefferson County, NY has identified two Corlis HINDS -- either of which could be the aforementioned Republican Assemblyman. Answers to the questions above should enable me to correctly identify "who is who". My first choice for the Assemblyman would be: Corlis HINDS born 22 Jun 1774 Barre, Worcester, MA married in 1795 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT to Polly BENT born: 1778 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT died: 31 Aug 1859 in Newark, Licking Co, OH They had the following children: 1. Alpheus Hardin HINDS b: 09 Mar 1796 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT married 01 Jan 1818 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Mercy WILKIE b: 10 Sep 1797 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY 2. Betsey HINDS b: 03 Mar 1798 in Mt Holly, Rutland, VT married 27 Mar 1817 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Larned (Learned?) Sampson FOSTER b: 1794 in Bradford, PA 3. Patty HINDS b: 01 Jan 1800 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT married 25 Dec 1817 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Eliphalet Morgan HOWARD b: 02 Mar 1794 in Lynne, CT 4. Susan HINDS b: Abt 1802 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT 5. Corlis HINDS b: 01 Dec 1803 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY [birth also found as Mt Holly, Rutland Co,VT] 6. Sophrona HINDS b: 1805 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY My second choice is the father of the above Corlis HINDS (b 1774): namely: Corlis HINDS b 10 Apr 1748 Brookfield, Worcester, MA d 1832 Petersham, Worcester, MA married (2nd wife) in 1772 Barre, Worcester, MA, to Susannah HENRY b abt 1748 Brookfield, Worcester, MA Corlis b 1748 was still living in Barre MA in 1789/90, when his last child was born (Susannah HINDS). I have no further record of him until his death in 1832 at the home of his first son Samuel, in MA. Corlis HINDS b 1774 was one of seven sons of Corlis HINDS b1748 MA, who in turn was one of 5 sons of Corliss HINDS b1724 MA. Descendants of these HINDS lines first migrated predominantly to VT, NY (incl. Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego and other counties), NH and ME. SUMMARY & COMMENTS: Corlis HINDS, b1774 MA, arrived in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY from Mt. Holly, Rutland Co, VT, about 1802-1803 and appears to be present in Watertown until about 1815. Three of his children marry in Watertown - two in 1817 and one in 1818. One son, Corlis HINDS b1803, marries in Watertown in 1830. However, there appears to be no evidence of Corlis HINDS b 1774, in Oneida Co and Jefferson Co NY federal census records from 1810-1840. There are census records of "Carlos HINDS" and "Curtis HINDS" but their age profiles do not match up. Why does Corlis HINDS b1774 not appear in the 1810, 1820, 1830 or 1840 Jefferson Co NY census? Did he temporarily move, just at census time, to VT or MA where his siblings, parents and many cousins still lived - or did he "hide out" from the census takers for some reason? Could his children who married in 1817-1818 in Watertown have lived with relatives or future in-laws there and not their parents? After Corlis HINDS b1774 arrived in Jefferson Co, NY, between 1802-1803, his brothers Thomas HINDS b1780, Joseph Buckminster HINDS b 1787 and possibly Jonas HINDS b1783, also relocated to Jefferson Co. Thomas was in Jefferson Co as early as Feb 1813, Joseph as early as March 1814 and Jonas circa May 1835 (each relocation is based on a child born in Jefferson Co). Did the brothers move to Jefferson Co following the footsteps of their father Corlis b 1748 -- if he was the first Corlis HINDS in Jefferson Co??? or did they follow their older brother Corlis b 1774??? As one final observation, one of the Jefferson Co websites identifies a "Corlis HINDS" who appears in the list of "EARLY SETTLERS" of Jefferson County. This list can be viewed at the Jefferson Co GenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/earlsett.htm [They define an "Early Settler" as the head of a household living in Jefferson County before 1850.] Unfortunatley there is no other information about this "Corlis HINDS" that would fuher assist in identifying him. Any and all assistance in answering the questions at the top of this email would be appreciated.// Gord HINES (in Regina SK Canada) emails: ghines@sk.sympatico.ca OR ghines@bigfoot.com
Dear New York & Northeast Research Friends, I sent this post out to the general list a week ago and then as I continued the work on another large book for the site I realized I never sent this to some of the state lists which might very easily find connections as in each of these old books, there are virtually hundreds of references to the Northeast and many other areas that the Livingston County people and Ingham County People came from. If you happen to have one of the individuals in the P & B book I am doing now, man you will strike it rich as many have full family pedigree charts listed. > >Well, it has taken 6 months or so but I think you will find this overhaul >well worth the wait.
