Recently, I discovered that the family of my ancestor SAMUEL WELLS was originally from Long Island. He came to Bradford Co., PA about 1792. I'm trying to find out where he was born and was told the family migrated to Wallkill, Orange Co., NY from L.I. It was posted to another list that there were papers donated to the Historical Society in Orange County regarding L.I. families. I was wondering if anyone here would have the address and phone number of the Orange County Historical Society. Thanks for your help, Marie Thingelstad Kansas
Thanks to all that answered my question on Empire Flats. One more thing would someone please give me the address for the Watertown Daily Times, I have misplaced it, I need to send them some money for my obit.. Carole Kelly
Hi NY Rooters, I would like to purchase a listing of all NY regiments in the Civil War for use at the Orange County Genealogical Society. We have the 1999 listing of NY soldiers, showing their regiment(s)...but we don't know where their regiments were formed. By now I feel sure someone has compiled this information into one document. If you know its name and where it can be purchased, please let me know. Thanks in advance. Saw action at Yorktown, Fair Oaks, North Carolina in 1863, Petersburgh in 1864 & Richmond in 1865. [I'm pretty sure of Drury's Bluff, too-- though I just noticed it wasn't on this list I had from Alan Everest's _Briefly Told_ p.40] "History Of Clinton and Franklin Counties, NY"- Hurd pp76-102 in the 1980 edition cove rthe 96th nicely. See this page for a bibliography by USAMHI; http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/CivilWar/CWUnits/ny/inf/96inf.htm And "Antoine Ponsot" <AP804@prodigy.net> has been researching the Reg't for a couple years. [he's not a genealogist, but has a letter from Orrin WALKER of Co G] Most of the Reg't was from Northern NY- What was your ancestor's name? Have you sent for service record & pension from NARA? If you're in NY, a major library should have Phisterer's _NY in the War of the Rebellion_, which will list all the actions & their dates. jim
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful assistance on my recent query! :-) -John
I just received a obit from Watertown, and I was wondering if someone would tell me where 13 Empire Flats is. Was it a town in the early 1900's or is it a street name? Thanks Carole Kelly
Hello, Does anyone have any information on the New York Volunteer 96th Infantry during the Civil War? One of my descendents was in K Company and I'm trying to find information on this unit. Any/all help would be appreciated. Thanks, -John

I was about to answer a question someone asked about COUNTRYMAN in the subject census when I accidentally deleted the message. I do not have the person's address. Please email me for answer. There is an Adam COUNTRYMAN and a couple of others. Jayne perllan987@aol.com
Mike, We corresponded about a year ago about the possible connection between the surnames Burnett and Burns. I saw your recent posting about WHITING and am writing on that topic. I suspect that Johann Christoph Wieting (abt 1759-1817) may be my 4xgr grandfather so I'm looking into that surname. I'm not certain how Wieting is properly pronounced in German but "wheating" and "whiteing" are possibilities. Your "Palatine" Whiting could be an anglicized version of Wieting. Technically I suppose, J.C. Wieting was not a Palatine. He was born in Brandenburg, Germany and conscripted into the English army. He was captured by the Colonists at Saratoga in 1777. After the war he stayed on, became a Lutheran minister, eventually settled among the Palatines in Minden in Montgomery Co. and had 14 children. I have circumstantial evidence, but can't yet prove, that one of his children was my 3xgr grandmother, Gertraut (Charity) "W." who was born in 1784. Do you suppose your Peter Whiting could be another of his children? Ed Harrison EJHarrison@compuserve.com
Don't confuse the rules which govern in NY City with those for the rest of NY State. Anyone can walk into to NYC Municipal Archives and get a certified vital record from their collection, and most of these records are also available on microfilm at a Family History Center. The NYCMA has Births to 1909, Marriages to 1937, and Deaths to 1948. They ask for relationship on the mail-order request form but don't ask if you go there in person. The NYC Dept of Health has post-1909 Birth records and post-1948 Death records. They're sticky about Birth records, but any relative can get a Death record. Interesting, the actual cause of death stopped being listed on NYC Death certs about 1948 - now they just say "Natural Causes". (I suppose accidental or violent death might be different). The NY State Dept of Health in Albany is the one with the 50 year rule (Marriages and Deaths) and 75 year rule (Births), but even these can be waived if the individual is deceased and you are a _direct_ descendent. Here is my DAVIS et al. info..... and finding more recently. I just discovered the parents of my gg Grandfather Nathaniel DAVIS, b ca. 1858 were Joel DAVIS, b. 1814 Warwick, Orange Co. d. 1901in Erin Chemung Co., NY and Matilda COLE, b. 1827 d. 1908 in Erin, Chemung Co. NY. They lived in Warwick Orange Co. NY and the DAVIS's seem to have been there for at least 3 or 4 generations. I find that Joel DAVIS and Matilda COLE DAVIS had at least 8 children, mostly boys and that at least 2 of them were born in PA. Nathaniel married Hattie May DRAKE daughter of Thomas DRAKE and Mary McELROY, I have not been able to find information on them in Orange Co., except that there were DRAKEs and McELROYs there. They also seem to be connected to POWELL and QUACKENBUSCH families there. Getting back to my DAVIS line, I forgot to add that I have one additonal generation going back to probably 1889 or earlier. William DAVIS was the father of my Joel DAVIS.I recently received some great and helpful informaiton from a fellow DAVIS researcher that there were two DAVIS brothers who fought in the Revolution from Warwick, Orange Co. NY. Nathaniel DAVIS and Benjamin DAVIS. The gentleman who sent me the informaiton has a significant amont of info. on previous generations in Orange Co. and Sussex Co. NJ and even going back to England. Please contact me and I will send his e-mail address. Look forward to sharing info on these families. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com
Dear Daniel and List: Thanks for the re-post but I'm afraid that some of my prior instructions are now out-of-date slightly due to the reorganization of the entire GenExchange site. The main NYGenExchange URL is: http://www.genexchange.com/ny/index.cfm >From there you now select the NY county you are interested in. (If you are looking for a Long Island Cemetery but are unsure of the exact location, particularly whether it is in Queens or Brooklyn, check both counties.) Each of the counties now has it's own Cemetery Directory and Burial Index. The major change has been due to the fact that the databases were getting so large that they simply had to be divided up. Naturally, because this is a volunteer effort, some counties are more complete than others. All major, commercial, or religious Long Island (Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk) cemeteries are in the Directories. Burials for these larger and still active cemeteries are entered into the Burial Index at the discretion of the visitor and are in no way connected to the cemeteries themselves. So, if you don't find a particular burial for Holy Cross, Evergreens, etc. it's because they haven't been entered by a researcher who is working on that particular family and chooses to donate the knowledge to the database. For historical (no longer active) cemeteries, however, many have been entered in their entirety by dedicated volunteers who have scoured archives, the cemeteries themselves, and LDS films to bring the information online for those researchers who cannot easily get to the NYC area to find the materials. Enjoy. And, if you have knowledge (no queries, please) of burials at any of the cemeteries, please feel free to add them to the database! Best regards. Nancy. I just posted this to the Orange County List and thought there might be someone on this list that might be interested. I have an old German Bible from the German Church that was on Johnson Street, Newburgh. It belonged to my grandparents. In it are some newspaper clippings. I'll list the name and year for the postings. If you are interested in scanned copies of these clippings for your genealogy records please email me mclark@eticom.net If you think they might connect for your genealogy research, please feel free to email me.
