    3. Dear Marie, Here is info about Orange County Genealogical Society: ORANGE COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY 101 Main Street, Goshen, NY 10924 The Orange County Genealogical Society (OCGS) was formed in 1971 and is now commencing its 29th Year. The purposes of the Society are to encourage genealogical research, collect and preserve genealogical and family papers making them available for study, and educate the public as to the importance of genealogical research for the preservation of the family --- past, present and future. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in genealogy. Monthly meetings are the 1st Saturday of the month at 9AM. Most meetings are followed by a guest speaker on a genealogical or historical subject. The Society has 6 major working Committees that are responsible for its success: The Program Committee puts on an Annual Seminar and an Annual Dinner each May, organizes the Genealogy Classes, and arranges for our guest speakers. The Research Room Committee staffs our facilities in the 1841 Courthouse. They are constantly acquiring new materials to help researchers by either purchase or donation. They arrange for bookbinding and other preservation projects. OCGS has one of the most extensive Genealogical collections in the area. The hours are as follows: EVERY MONDAY & FRIDAY MORNINGS (Except Holidays) 8:30 - 1200 FIRST & THIRD TUESDAY EVENINGS (Of Each Month) 6:30 - 9:30 FIRST & THIRD WEDNESDAY ALL DAY (Of Each Month) 8:30 - 4:00 THIRD SATURDAY ALL DAY (Of Each Month) 9:00 - 4:00 FIRST SATURDAY AFTERNOON (After meeting & program) 12:00 - 4:00 The Editorial Committee publishes a 12 page fact-filled Quarterly Journal every three months and an annual index. Back issues are available for purchase which offer hours of interesting reading. The Membership Committee constantly maintains a file of our nearly 1,000 members across the nation, Canada, and other countries. Annual dues are only $10.00 per year which entitle you to our Quarterly Journal, free queries, and a chance to do some volunteer work if you prefer. A five year membership is available for $45.00 Life membership is available for $175.00. You may send a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Society and request information about membership or visit us in Goshen and inquire in person. The Publications Committee manages the Society's "Items Offered For Sale" and the mailing of the Quarterly Journal. New items that would aid Orange County researchers are constantly being added. You may send a stamped self-addressed business size envelope to the Society and request a copy of the publications list or request the list from this address to be sent by email. Please put OCGS BOOK LIST in the subject area. The Correspondence Committee will answer short, to the point requests for information. Please sum up your request in one paragraph, include a stamped self-addressed envelope, and perhaps a small donation of a dollar or two to cover copying costs. You may request information about the Society or a list of items for sale in the same letter. Only regular mail is used by this committee due to the large volume of requests they receive. They have no means of receiving email and they do not have a web site. Throughout the past 28 years the Society has undertaken many projects that it has felt useful to the genealogical world. We have published 3 Cemetery books and are currently working on our 4th. We have reprinted the 3 major Orange County Histories with new indexes to make them easy to use. We have worked closely with other organizations and libraries and shared resources with them to make information more readily available. The Orange County Genealogical Society welcomes new members and appreciates all those who offer so much of their volunteer time. ___ ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. 1. Re: Isn't this PLAGIARISM? And what do we do about it?
    2. Gord Hines [SK]
    3. Hi Ed -- Don't give up hope yet!! You CAN and SHOULD take action to stop further infringement of your pre-eminent copyright. First... I'm no lawyer... and I don't live in the US... but when I last looked into the matter of copyright several years ago, I was told by a lawyer here in Canada, something to the effect that it is "common law" in virtually every country with copyright laws that it is not "legally" necessary for the original author of a work to place a "notice of copyright" on it. The "right" simply exists as a matter of law and belongs to the author. (same thing with works of art -- much more enforceable if the work is also signed, however -- and today, even with software programs -- all termed "intellectual property"). He went on to inform me that the reason for placing a "formal notice" of a copyright on a work is that it becomes easier in a court of law to "prove one's case" in the event of bringing a lawsuit for copyright infringement before the courts. A key element to be proven in any such case is normally that your claim to ownership can be proven to pre-date the infringer's claim. In your case, you have the "deposit" records of the organizations with whom you placed copies of you work, among many other sources of proof that you no doubt still possess (working drafts, notes etc.) It also helps to be able to show how your work found its way into the hands of the infringer. Finally, you still own the copyright... despite someone else's (invalid) claim. You should contact them and inform them as to your ownership of copyright and have all the credits etc restored... ... First, however, I'd talk to a lawyer... As I understand the profession in both the US and Canada, there is often no charge for the first 20-30 minutes to discuss your case and determine its merits. Copyright infringement is not new... there have been some really big cases in the US... tho' your work might be in a somewhat smaller "league of its own", and not give rise to any large contingency fees.... but DO check into who has infringed on your copyright... they might have deeper pockets than you think. Good luck...// Gord HINES (in Regina SK Canada) EHarr76546@cs.com wrote: > Subject: Isn't this PLAGIARISM? And what do we do about it? 2. Dear Ed My sincerest sympathies. What a rotten thing to do. Small comfort to know that you did the work and that it has helped innumerable people. Your message brought me up short in another respect. I researched, compiled and wrote a 200 pg "compendium of information" re the life of "A Mecklenburg NY Farm Family 1905-1919." I too distributed it to appropriate libraries and historical societies. (If I ever get my scanner hooked up I plan to offer it to the Schuyler Co Rootsweb site). Bottom line -- I never copyrighted it. Do you know how one goes about it? Again, sorry for what happened to you and thanks for the timely warning. 1. Isn't this PLAGIARISM? And what do we do about it?
    2. PLAGIARIZE - "to take and use as one's own the writing or ideas of another" - The American Heritage Dictionary. In 1994 I compiled a list of the 4000+ burials since 1816 in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Corfu, NY. Data came from several sources - ALL cited in an "Acknowledgements" and discussed in an "Introduction". Also included are computer-drawn plot "maps" and a brief history of the cemetery (with source citations). All known burials are tabulated alphabetically with married women cross-listed by maiden name when known. Individual data include death/interment date, grave location referenced to the "maps", and in many cases, birth date/place, military service, spouse(s) and limited genealogical information (mostly on my family members). Monetary reward was never my goal. Complimentary copies of the 90 page product were deposited at the Genesee Co. Hist. Library, at the Richmond Mem. Lib. in Batavia, and with the E.H. Cemetery Assn. Copies were also given to some individuals who expressed an interest in the work. I have also done, and will continue to do, many look-ups for fellow genealogists. (My email address has been listed on the Genesee Co. Genweb page cemetery look-ups for a couple of years!) Where does PLAGIARISM come into the picture? While surfing the Web, I visited <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygags/index.htm> and followed the links to Genesee County Cemeteries. There I was surprised to find all of my Evergreen Hill Cemetery data (except the maps) duplicated, including my family's genealogical information. The cemetery's history is there (with no source citations), but gone are the "Acknowledgements" and "Introduction" sections and ANY reference to me as the compiler of the information. It appears that the only things added are the announcement "Copyright (c) 1998 by [name withheld]" and a warning that copies may not be made without permission of the copyrighter. I did not copyright my material. A mistake I guess! But, doesn't courtesy demand what the law apparently does not - that the source of information be properly cited when it is reproduced? Will other volunteers be willing to spend months digging through handwritten records, walking through cemeteries, checking and rechecking the data, and compiling their results only to have someone else reproduce it all with a copyright? Do we need to proceed with a degree of caution that would make a Philadelphia lawyer smile? Or can we do our work, exchange information, discuss, give credit where credit is due, and all benefit in the long run? Ed Harrison EJHarrison@compuserve.com P.S. I have also compiled the burials in Alabama Center Cemetery, Alabama, NY. Copies of this have not been distributed or placed on the Internet (yet). However, I will do look-ups for anyone interested.

    2. This message is for Bev in Arizona who wrote me about Countryman after seeing my message to someone else about that surname. I am not researching the name Countryman. I was just responding to that person's question about the surname Countryman in the 1800 Otsego Co. NY census index. The information I sent her is below: Town of Otsego Countriman, Fredk. 30010 10010 (Countriman is spelled that way) Countryman, Henry 30010 00010 Countryman, Adam 10100 10100 Countryman, John 11001 22201 The 1800 Federal population census schedules give, for each family, the name of its head plus the number of family members (including the family head) in each of the following categories: Free white males under 10 years of age Free white males of 10 years and under 16 years of age Free white males of 16 years and under 26 years of age Free white males of 26 years and under 45 years of age Free white males of 45 years and over The second group of numbers is for females in the same age categories. 1. EVERETT MA NH > Steuben Co. BORDEN Yates Co.
    2. Michael Burnett
    3. Looking for information my suspected 2nd and 3rd Great Grandparents. Jesse EVERETT, son of a MA Rev. War veteran, Richard EVERETT was in NH for the 1830 census and then appears in Steuben Co. in Troupsburg for the 1840 census and in Wheeler, Steuben Co, for the 1850, 1855 and 1860 census, at which time he was 76 years old (this proves a genealogical theory called conservation of age,... read below) and married to a Sally, 78 years old and born in MA. in the houshold were Levi EVERETT, apparently his son, and his wife Caroline. For the 1855 census, Jesse and Sally EVERETT are in the houshold of Levi EVERITT and Caroline, Levi is listed as the child of Jesse. Also, listed are Elson? son of Levi, and Samuel N. 36 m, apparently the son of Jesse and Sally EVERITT. Only 8 houses distant, are listed my suspected ggg Grandparents, Lewis Clark "Luke" EVERITT, (1855) 35 m b. Steuben Sarah A. (BORDEN?) 34 f wife b. Yates William L. 11 m Sarah M. (My gg Grandmother Sarah Jennie EVERITT?) 9 f Sally I 6 f Lydia A. 3 f and Anthony Comm? 59 m b. Montgomery Co. I believe Sarah BORDEN EVERETT may have been the daughter of Peter BORDEN of the town of Milo, Yates co. in the 1825 and 1830 census, or perhaps Cornelius BORDEN of the 1825 census in Barrington, Yates Co. One of the mysteries with this EVERETT family is the birth places of Levi and Lewis Clark EVERETT, listed as Steuben and NY State in various census, ... if they are the sons of Jesse EVERITT of NH, they should have been born in NH. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Mike Burnett mwburne@aol.com

    3. Marty -- In reply.... You'll find two lists of NY CW regiments on links from http://SNYMORAC.MORRISVILLE.EDU/pages/library/local_history/sites/ The one by county might serve your purposes... http://www.snymor.edu/pages/library/local_history/sites/obtained.htmlx A complete list of regiments is found at http://www.snymor.edu/pages/library/local_history/sites/unitinfo/ Don't overlook the black regiments recently appearing in lists, too... I will also post to this maillist, three 1998 emails that purport to contain a complete list of all NY CW regiments (the source is given but I've not verified it). These three emails were posted in June 1998 From: Stu Hotchkiss <Stu_Hotchkiss@MLSONLINE.COM> To: NEWYORK-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU These will follow immediately. I hope this information meets your needs at a lower cost than buying it. // Regards, Gord HINES (in Regina SK Cananda) Marty Irons wrote: > Subject: NY regiments in the Civil War Resent-Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 14:59:04 -0700 (PDT) Resent-From: GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 17:51:03 -0400 From: Marty Irons <k2mi@juno.com> To: GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com > Hi NY Rooters, > > I would like to purchase a listing of all NY regiments in the > Civil War for use at the Orange County Genealogical Society. > > We have the 1999 listing of NY soldiers, showing their > regiment(s)...but we don't know where their regiments were > formed. > > By now I feel sure someone has compiled this information > into one document.
