    2. I think that a lot of time's it's new genealogist that are expecting the hobby to be easy. Often they arn't clear as how to ask for what they might be looking for. We need to be patient with people who tend to put things a certain way. We were all new at one time. Ken Coolidge

    2. I am also totally in agreement with Richard's comments regarding the "article" on internet genealogy. In three years of doing research in libraries and all the other "valid" sources, and belonging to several different lists on the internet, I have found that a majority of the queries are well thought out and presented well. Very occasionally there are poorly-crafted queries that want an entire tree for free (no poetic pun intended). 2. Hi Richard, Very well said and my feelings exactly. I'm not able to visit distant places to gather my information first hand and other people's leg work and good will has helped me immensely. My objective is to gather as much information on my lines as possible (and I've been able to push most of them back several generations) so that it's there for my descendants should one or more of them care. One of the lines is "certified" if they want to join Mayflower or DAR or whatever--the others are gravy. Dee Watt searching Dickens, Kennedy, Taber (among others)

    2. Richard Wood
    3. I just finished reading the web page on http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/cook.htm about the plusses and minuses of Internet genealogy. There are some good suggestions within the "scolding of the users of the Internet for genealogy". But like a lot of information today, one must kiss a lot of frogs to find the prince that fills in your one missing branch. I am not new to genealogy, but I find the net a new tool by which to maximize the accuracy of my information. It reminds me of many years ago when I started to work for a large electric utility. The "old timers" who had worked there for 20+ years never stopped carping about how hard it was in the "old" days and that we youngsters didn't know what it was to "work" for a living. None of them ever tried to update their knowledge base, because the old way was the best, no new "fangled" ideas would work. Sadly, they gradually faded away as technology replaced them. One thing for sure, the writer is correct, there are many capable people on the net who are willing to take the time to be helpful to those who didn't cut their teeth the "old fashioned way", BTI. I do not tout the use of the net as a sole source, I believe that a blend of the Internet and hallways of assessor's offices, microfilm squint and deciphering family bibles are all important in the documentation process. The tone of the message I read was quite negative, certainly not in an encouraging manner. I owe a number of people on the Internet a lot of thanks for helping me fill in some blanks on my still half full (or empty) family tree. Thanks again to all of you. 1. SHAW BIRTHPLACE
    2. Looking for information on Lena Julia Shaw, b. abt.1858-1860. According to info given on the census by others, she was b. in Canada, but she has given various birthplaces on other documents. She has given Buffalo, NYC, and Jersey City, NJ as places of birth. She was m. in Boston in 1886, but there is no record of her or her husband in Boston prior to the marriage, so it's possible they both passed through NY on the way to Boston. Are there city directories available for Buffalo and NYC for the period 1880-1886? The only other thing I can think to check is the 1880 census and there are so many Shaws on it I wouldn't know where to start! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    3. Hello, I would like to find the decendants of Gaspar Viviano. He had 4 children that I know of. One being Emmanuel born Oct. 18, 1907 and died April 1980. His last known address was Woodstock New York. He may have been an attny. The other children of Gaspar were Catherine, an artist who owned a gallery in New York, Virginia and Philip. I have not been able to get any death certificates on these people because I am not a direct decendant. My line is Charles or Calegero, the brother of Gaspar. Would like to find someone to do some paid research, or lookups in city directories etc. Thank you Judy

    2. Dianne Thomas
    3. Is there a way of getting records from the early 1900's of patients at asylums in NY state? I had an uncle born 1909 and died 1926 of St. Vitus Dance in an asylum. My aunt seemed to recall he was admitted to an asylum in the Albany area, even though his family lived in Western NY, in Ontario Cnty. Supposedly, he died when he had a seizure and fell down a flight a stairs, breaking his neck. How would I find his burial? Also, Syracuse had an orphange where my mother was for about 2 years. Is there a way of finding records on her adoption? My father and his siblings were also placed in this orphange, for a period of time when my grandmother was fined for leaving them unattended, because she was working to support her 3 children, when she and they, were abandoned. Any clues on how to get ahold of records? Thanks!
