    3. Hi, I just joined the list, and I missed the URL to the marriage Index. would it be possible to have it reposted? I'm researching the following names: Carroll, Leone, Stedge, Teresi,...all of these were at one time in Elmira, NY (Chemung County), but I'm looking for others with the same interests, as my Great-grandfather William Patrick Carroll was not from Elmira originally. 2. My apologies to the list if I offended anyone with my sharp retort to the poster abt the marriage url. I had written privately but was ignored and I felt I should reply publicly. There are many who have e-mailed that the url is correct. Again, I am sorry if I offended anyone.

    3. Thanks to all who have responded to my message re the marriage index site. I just tried it again and just stayed with the opening page and it was just fine and was indeed an excellent genealogy site. My apologies! As one person pointed out, I may have accidentally clicked on one of the commercial sites which are often advertised. Whatever I may have clicked on certainly took me far from genealogy and that is when I ran into difficulty getting out of it. I had no problem this time. I promise to check further before sending any more such messages. Too bad she felt it necessary to post this without really checking the site out... All you have to do is click on the "X" and your out... AND Thomas J Schmidt needs to be thanked for all his hard work... I don't think it is completed yet...It only goes to "G"... I was looking for BOGAART.. there are marriages there by every spelling for that name... It also has a place you can click on for the top 100 World Wide Genealogy sites...AND there is a notice...that says, "All Adult sites will be deleted at once"... can't see that this is a bad site... 1. Jefferson Co NY Maillists, Query Bulletin Boards & Genealogy Homepages
    2. Gord Hines [SK]
    3. Hi listmembers -- I compiled this list of website/maillist urls for Jefferson County, NY to assist another researcher who was new to the www. Others might benefit from this information as well... so here it is. [N.B.: This list excludes "personal" JeffCo county homepages that focus on one individual's families or surnames] No slight is intended to the many other NY counties that no doubt have similar maillists and website homepages -- nor to any personal JeffCo sites not in this listing. There are several Jefferson County (aka JeffCo) lists to chose from. None are very active, so I subscribe to all of them (see #1, 2, 3 listed below). I also have queries posted on the other JeffCo sites that do NOT have maillists (see #3, 4, 5 listed below). #3 is an exception -- it has both. It also has the greatest amount of JeffCo data online plus a large # of relevant related links. N.B. The JeffCo Cemetery link for lookups (see #3 below). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Jefferson Co Maillists (pure and simple) 1. http://www.egroups.com/group/jeffcofamhis/info.html List is explained at above url. A subscribe link is on the same page above. You can see postings to this list at http://www.egroups.com/list/jeffcofamhis/ 2. http://www.onelist.com/community/jeffhistgen [96 members as at today] List is explained at above url and can join there too. You can also join this list via links on the page at http://home.imcnet.net/~lectrich/jmailingl.htm There is another "general interest" list for Jefferson Co at http://www.onelist.com/community/jeffcountyny [71 members today] Jefferson Co genealogy web homepage site with JeffCo Maillist & Query board: 3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/ Maillist Subscribe link is also on the page i.e. mailto: NYJEFFER-L-request@rootsweb.com with one word only as the Subject: Subscribe The above homepage also has a link to a Queries bulletin board NOTE: The JeffCo Cemeteries lookup page is hard to locate on this site but it is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/cemdex.htm Jefferson Co websites with query postings but NO county maillists 4. http://www.genexchange.com/ny/jefferson/ The webpage above also has many links to other Jeffco data 5. http://www.usgennet.org/~ahnyjeff/jefferson.htm The webpage above also has a subscribe link for a new "NY-ALHN" list -- but this is NOT just Jefferson Co. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> I hope these might lead some of you with Jefferson Co roots to many interesting hours of research on your JeffCo connections ... and to some breakthroughs too!! // Regards, Gord (in Regina SK Canada)

    3. Carl, My experience is to go directly to the Town Clerk where the vital event occured and request a search. I must admit that I have had many various responses from telling me to go to you know where (kidding, Albany of course,) to being EXTREMELY helpful, and oh by the way do you need this person? The county does not keep the origianal records but the town clerks do. I have not had much luck through the mail with tc's but an in person attempt is usually good. 3. Greetings from Cincinnati. I am new to thislist, which was highly recommended to me by a fellow genealogist on the internet. She told me that someone might give me the "subject heading" and/or some other way to locate the posts from this group earlier this year pertaining to the "pre-Ellis Island" emigrants. SCornelia Schrader-Muggenthaler lists the long-lost child, Eduard Arbogast, who was born in Obersteinbach to my great-great-grandparents,Jacques & Magdaleina Arbogast like this: EDUARD ARBOGAST destination: New York Year: 1854 source code: 8123.10 Source: SCHRADER-MUGGENTHALER, CORNELIA. The Alsace Emigration Book. vol 1 Apollo, OA: Closson Press, 1989. Pg 4 I am absolutely certain that this is my Eduard--as another source gives the same information and says that he is from Obersteinbach--which is where Jacques & Magdaleina lived--and there were no other Arbogasts who lived in the entire Canton of Wissembourg. I have been told that there is a possibility that if I find out where the records for the pre-Ellis Island emigrants are located that I might obtain some information about Eduard. Like who he came here with. I have searched GTA and found no mention of his sailing in 1854. Thank you for any help you are able to give me. Buffy

It certainly does provide a possible clue, but the user must try to authenticate it. Just like the "old timers" did. >> Agreed. Guess I've been spending time "collecting breadcrumbs" you might say - by adding "the internet" to my genealogy research toolbag!! I'm actually very enthusiastic about "online" as a way of connecting with others who are also researching. Sure beats the "small circle" of folks I knew down at my local FHC or the few I coorespond with! Common sense rules, of course - to weed out what's here. But - I have to say that I really appreciate the ability to go the the LDS site for example - and look up what films I want to order - at home - instead of wasting valuable "time at the library" doing that. Instead, I can be looking at films there! <g> I use several of the posting boards - and have a few "subscriptions". Have been able to pour through books and local histories I hadn't even known about. And - I've been "learning" so much!! From colonial sites - to you name it! Was reading old court records from CT for the 1630s-1640s the other night - online! (One of my ancestors was a juror - so am looking up those specific dates to see what "things" he heard and judged on...) Fascinating. And all because of this new medium that allows an easy way to search out these types of things. I realize I am waxing poetic here - and I certainly see the nonsense that sometimes is on websites or posts - but all in all - am a firm believer in "the medium" - and the conversations (and connections) we make - are really up to each of us. Sure helps when hardly any of us seem to be physically located wherever it is we are looking for relatives!!! <g> I've also run into some really nice people online as well. Luckily, I've been able to "return the favor" a few times around too - and I like that. We're all trying to do the same thing. This mailing list is yet another example of "us" - all different ages, levels of experience, places we live, etc - but all with an interest in this case of "NY based genealogy research". Terrific!!! It's a great tool to share things we find as we are each out there beating the bushes... - and thus, we all move ahead .... (think I'm running down now... and I know you must be grateful!! <g>) debbie in california CAhobbies@aol.com (Searching these surnames in NY: Pratt, Hosmer, Schmidt/Smith, Witt - with allied surnames such as: Hawkes, Kittredge, Miller, Hillman, Burnett. Primarily Niagara and Erie Counties - with a few things so far in Livingston and Onondaga co's as well...)
