    3. Willard was a state hospital in Ovid, NY., and you can find a description of a collection of patient files at the NYS Archives. The description of the files is on their web site, but you would have to go to Albany to view them. 2. Glen Perazzo
    3. I'm hoping someone out there is missing a gr.gr.gr. uncle by the name of Chauncey Billings SMITH born somewhere in New York state in 1819. He married a Miss SANFORD in c. 1842 before the birth of their daughter Levinia in 1843. They moved to Crawford Co. PA by 1845. Perhaps BILLINGS may be a family name? Chauncey's parents were both born in NY also. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks, Glen Perazzo <glenbeth@phonewave.net>

    3. Hi, Marsha, I decided to send this info along to the whole list after replying privately to the initial posting. I also have a relative - my gg grandfather's sister - who belonged to this Order, and have done quite a bit of research regarding them. The Order was founded in Montreal - Sr. Marguerite D'Youville - and spread from there across the US and Canada. They have very extensive records - from the very beginning. The Archives for the American Province (as they refer to it) is in Lexington, MA. I do not have the address or phone number right at hand, but have spoken with Sisters there and in Montreal, as well as Calgary, and Winnipeg (my Grey Nun served early on, and for about 50 years, in the western parts of Canada when it still took 28 days to get from Montreal to Winnipeg. These were brave women. I recently got a book from Winnipeg on Interlibrary Loan that was written by one of the Sisters and gave a lot of insight into the early years in the "west" and just what they had to endure. The Sisters sent reports back to the Mother House in Montreal weekly, and these records have been maintained. I also have a lovely necrology for my Sr. Mary O'Brien that tells of all the places she served and a lot of insight into her life. Since she was born and raised in NY (very near the Canadian border), her primary duty was teaching English - most of the Sisters were French-speaking - and she was bi-lingual. She also served as Mother Superior at one point in one her stations "in the west" - all this before 1914. I have also found that most religious orders - both nuns and priests - maintain quite good records. Sometimes the hardest part is finding out which order you need :) I have found info on 2 priests and 3 nuns so far - just found I have 1 more too research in an order I am already familiar with - and they have all been great to work with. I hope this encourages those with "religious" relatives to pursue them. Info on one of my priests led me to the burial location for his parents - alongside him! -- Candy_B cbservices@monmouth.com Researching Bennett, Cooper, Vanderveer, Woolley & related families in NJ Researching O'Brien, Brown, Boyle, Cavanaugh, Noonan, Fitzgerald, Spellman, Messier (Macey), LaCroix (Cross), Blais (Blair), Durand, Simonneau, Chabbot (Jabbot, Jabaut), Boucher, Sharron and related families in NY, New England and Quebec

Well, I myself "vote" for the Buffalo addresses and here is why. There is a college in downtown Buffalo named D'Youville College. It was the rival college to one I attended breifly in Snyder/ Buffalo which is now called Damien College. We had Franciscan nins though and I must "confess" (a-hem!) They died there, location unknown--she in 1855 and he in 1861. Children include Christopher, Ambrose, Henry, Liszette, and Franziska SCHMITZ. Cannot pick up the trail of any of them, except my gr-grandfather Christopher. Does someone have access to census records during this time or other written material that covers this time period and would be willing to do a lookup for me? Thanks. Jim Schmitz

    3. Marcena, There are two Churchvilles in New York State, but since you also asked about Chili Station, you're probably interested in the Churchville along the western edge of Monroe County. That Churchville is a hamlet on Black Creek in the Town of Riga which is abutted on the west by Genesee County, in the north by the Town of Odgen, the south by the Town of Wheatland, and the east by the Town of Chili, in the middle of which one will find Chili Center. Chili Station was probably a stop on the old New York Central mainline from Rochester to Buffalo which runs just north of Chili Center and between North Chili and West Chili. Does that make sense in the context of your family? Best regards, Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania

    2. Hello New York, I wish I could say it was from sunny Southern California, but we haven't seen the sun in three days. Anyway, I'm searching for any information anyone can give me regarding a distant second cousin twice removed. Her birth name was Emma GILLIE, born in Merrill, Michigan in 1886. I can't find anything on her in Saginaw County, right now. Around the age of 21, Emma entered the Order of the Gray Nuns of the Sacred Heart Convent D'Youville, New York. She took the name, "SISTER BARBARA," and apparently lived in the faith until she passed away in 1946. Sister Barbara had either a sister or cousin named Mary (Gillie) Gorman, who was a colorful character in early Merrill, Michigan history. I've shotgunned this posting because it is always good for success, so please bear with me. I don't know a thing about that particular faith, where it was, if it still exists and where she might be buried. I am really fascinated with these circumstances and would like to learn more. I'm pretty much a bonehead with this stuff; in fact, most stuff. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Kevin M. O'Brien Laguna Hills, CA
