You might want to check out the Chemung/Bradford/Tioga website in Rootsweb. I'm originally from Elmira, NY and there is a Soper St there, and I believe I've seen the name on the website I mentioned. Don't know if any of the names are the ones you're looking for, but worth a try. How do you find out the name of the ship if you have the approximate date it arrived and the port of entry? I am talking about 1849, New York. My g great grand father's citizenship papers gave a date of entry into the US, and I assume NY, as he settled in Rochester, NY. I would also assume Le Havre as the port of departure, as he came from southern Germany, and his brother-in-law took that route, the same year, from a near-by-town, and the same destination. Looking for parents of Eliza C. (or D. ) Jones, born about 1815 Hudson, NY, married James Boughton, and removed to Stephentown. Thanks for any tips. Sue
Thanks Jim, I also received a correction from Bill Twomey, a Bronx Historian. He states: "Ten Farms was the originally name for the old Village of Eastchester (now the current town that bears the name). It was located north of Westchester Village near the current site of Co-op City. The earlier name for West Farms was Twelve West Farms and you are right, it was thus named because it was west of Westchester Village." If anyone is interested in information about Queens NY; they can subscribe to the NYQUEENS list. How to subscribe. Send a message to NYQUEENS-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text.
Now that I found out where West Farms is, Ten Farms was the originally name for the old Village of Eastchester (now the current town that bears the name). It was located north of Westchester Village near the current site of Co-op City. Now my question, what newspaper in that area would have an obit for the year 1814? Also is there census records for that area for the years 1790,1800's. Thanks again Carole Kelly
i thought ten farms got it name from the original 10 farms that were formed in the area after the english took over new york from the dutch approximately 1680. it was settled mostly by connecticut yankees . my family was TOMPKINS and they had one of the 10 farms. this area soon became known as eastchester.if one looks at the census for eastchester for 1710 (it's 1 page long ) you get the names of the early settlers.this census is from "early new york state census records 1663-1772 " and is found on page 170. it also gives the age of each. the census lists 61 white males by age and first and last name. it also states " in the town of est chester and its districts are male christians 153- female do 136: male slaves 17 - female do 8 - and men from 16 year old to 60 as followeth, viz " it then lists the 61 males. jim cooros east meredith ny
