Hello All can anyone tell me what county Peekskill, New York is in Thanks Dennis
I am looking for PLUES in central area of NY. My ggrandfather Lucius was married to Ruth Ann Sweet. They lived near Charleston in Montgomery Co in 1880 with their two children John Lewis 6 and Nellie 2. I need to know his parents and siblings. The 1880 census states that he is 27 at that time and a farmworker, so birth year is ca 1853. From where did they come? Where did they go? Ruth died in 1903 in Central Bridge, a widow, and her son John took care of the arrangements, he lived in Oneonta at that time. Any information would be appreciated Shirley Becker WRIGHT PLUE GRAVES MILLER CLANCY Owens Sweet Siver Piersall Wilson
I'm searching for descendents or anyone researching the following BOURKE family in Oneida County, NY. Thomas immigrated from Ireland (where?) in 1836, lived variously in Utica and Town of Florence. He settled permanently in Utica about 1851 and lived there for the rest of his life. Shortly after Thomas' death, his widow with sons William F. and Miles R. were residing in Waterville (Town of Sangerfield); son Richard F. in Rochester (Monroe County); other children Thomas J., Hannah Mary, and John W. in Utica. 1 - Thomas BOURKE Born - Abt Apr 1810 IRL Died - 21 Jun 1877 Utica, Oneida Co, NY Bur. - 23 Jun 1877 Utica, NY sp- Mary O'NEIL Born - Abt 1816 IRL 2 - Thomas J. I recently found one of my ancestor's in something cited as "New York Adjutant General's Office Index of Awards on Claimes of the Soldiers of the War of 1812, Albany: - , 1860. Accompanying information states that "the original declarations of claims from which the index was compiled are on file in the Bureau of War Records maintained by the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Public Security Building, Albany, New York, 12206." Does anyone know if copies of the original claim file documents can be obtained from this or some other address? I would guess the information above might date from the early 1960s. If so, it seems to me the files might have been transferred to the NYS Archives by now. But then again, perhaps not. If someone has recently requested and received similar documents from New York State, I would be interested in knowing the steps you followed and the cost. Thanks, Dave Simonds
Greetings New York List: I just wanted to report that I've had some more success with receiving information from the Social Security Administration. (It's a pity that social security numbers weren't used a hundred or so years earlier!) Anyway, I've peeled back another layer of my daughter's ancestry on her dad's side. Prior to me getting the mail today, all she knew was the name of her great-grandfather (father of her paternal grandmother). Now we know he was born in 1892, in Canada, lived in Vermont and we also know the names of both of his parents, including his mother's maiden name! All of this information was on a copy of the original application for a social security number (SS5), filled out when the gentleman was about 46 years old in 1939. The length of time to receive this information from the Social Security Administration was approximately six weeks, which I think is about the same time period as last year. And, finally, I guess I will just say thanks to good old F. D. R. and his administration for implementing the system in the first place! Regards to "y'all" from a gorgeous night in central Texas, Marilyn Stern (formerly from Ulster Co., NY)

I received the following reply to my email that I had sent to William V. Barker who is the author of "Early Families of Schoharie County". I thought some of you might be interested in this. Earlene ----------------- Thank you for your interest in my work on genealogies of Herkimer, Montgomery, and Schoharie, New York. Information on my genealogy CD products is available also on my web site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billbarker The book "Families (to 1825) of Herkimer, Montgomery, & Schoharie, N.Y.", a genealogical compendium by William V.H. Barker, is available recorded on Compact Disk (CD) for IBM-compatible PC and Apple Macintosh home computers. The book on CD contains separate genealogy sections for the upstate New York counties of Herkimer, Montgomery, and Schoharie. Each county section has its own introduction, contents file, and set of family genealogies. In all, some 324 primary families are covered, plus there is a separate section for other individuals within each county. The CD files, which are meant to be read by the user's word processing software, are in Microsoft's Rich Text Format. These CD files have the ".RTF" extension and can be read by Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, and most other word processors. At present (February 1999) the book on CD is the equivalent of about 1,748 pages typewritten. No paper printout is supplied with the CD; it being left to the user to print desired portions for themselves. Those desiring a hardcover (paper) edition of the author's book "Early Families of Herkimer County, New York", which contains essentially the same Herkimer County genealogies as the CD, plus illustrations and extra appendix material, should contact Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, Maryland ("www.genealogical.com"). The author expects to add results from ongoing research to this book. In the future, it is expected that a revised version will be offered to CD purchasers (at an upgrade price). If you are interested in ordering this February 1999 version of "Families (to 1825) of Herkimer, Montgomery, & Schoharie, N.Y." on CD, please use the following order form (or an equivalent copy). Lewis (Ludwig?) KUHL immigrated from Germany approximately 1860. He was married to Amelia Elizabeth KUHL. Amelia KUHL stated in 1877 she lived in Pelham, NY, and was a lady at time of naturalizaton. They had one child, Elizabeth Amelia KUHL, born 1883 in NY. Lewis KUHL died when Elizabeth was a small child. It was said that she lived with h4er grandmother, Emilie HOELTZKE until her mother remarried. Amelia remarried a Hugo STUMPE and they lived in Jersey City, NJ. approximately 1900-1905. After that, I lost track of them. Hugo stated on 1900 census he was from Germany-immigrated in 1888, same year as Amelia(Emilie) and was a painter. They lived on Ocean Ave in Jersey City, NJ. Threre was also a Herman STUMPE on Ocean Ave, relative, who was a watch man. I am not sure if that mean jeweler or security guard. Please email me with some info! I am almost up against a brick wall! Thanks Susan

Hi Audrey -- did you know the original land patent for Michael Grant's land in Henry Co IL is viewable on line at the BLM-GLO site at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov -- and you can print it out -- or order a certified copy. You'll also see the land sale transaction record online at Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html -- use the "search" link, and enter LAST (surname) ONLY. He's in the list of GRANTs. It's hard to estimate the draw of "cheap" land... List members, I recently discovered my DAVIS DRAKE McELROY COLE and POWELL families, and I believe they may all have been from the Orange Co. area. Certainly the DAVIS, McELROY and COLEs. Do you have any THOMAS DRAKEs or CAROLINE DRAKEs? Here are the deails on the elusive folks I am seeking. My predicament, is that I have a death certificate for my gg Grandmother, Hattie May DRAKE, that doesn't seem to fit the census. Her death certificate gives father as Thomas O DRAKE (b. NY) and mother as Caroline POWELL (b. NY) and Hattie May DRAKEs birth place is listed as Gibson,(Corning) Steuben Co. and it would have been ca. 1863?. Try as I might,... I haven't been able to locate a Thomas DRAKE and Caroline that seem to make sense. However, I did find a Mary DRAKE, widowed and head of household in Chemung, Chemung Co. in the 1880 census. In that household in my gg Grandmother Hattie Mae DRAKE, living next door to her future husband, Nathaniel DAVIS. I have a very strong suspicion that the Orange Co. DRAKEs who were early settlers to the Reading area of Schulyer Co. were the same family as my DRAKEs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Michael Burnett mwburne@aol.com Cave Creek, AZ
