I have the exact date and place, so it shouldn't take too long, I hope. Please respond privately. Don't need to burden the list with this! 3. Have to add my two cents here. I agree. The first of my family lines I found when I first started was right there on CD #1. Although later I made some corrections to it, it was very useful and exciting to find that file. Some of their other CDs have been very useful. For instance, the CDs which contain books. I found some major errors at the LDS site in one of my major lines - my grandmother's family. The Kishpaugh name was spelled "Kisitpaugh," and they said the family came from Holland. They actually came from Prussia but sailed from Amsterdam. It seems to me that all information should be checked whether it's on a CD from FTM or from LDS. The genealogy library at FTM is highly useful. I've found much family stuff there. I also use FTM program and really like the program. It's easy to use unlike a couple others I've tried, and also has a feature that allows you to make a book. So in the book, I dump all the historical and interesting information that refers to any of my lines. For instance, one of my ancestors was involved in the Wyoming Massacre. I have a chapter on that and put things in there that I find on the Massacre. Before buying any of the FTM World Family Tree CDs, it might be wise to run a search at FTM and see if any of your lines show up on them. I did find the first set to be more useful than later ones and so don't buy them anymore, but do use their other CDs. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and generalize. Some of the CDs are very useful. 3. Hello, I am new to the list. I have been searching for information on a James T. BARTON. James is said to have come to the US from Ireland on an Orphan ship during the famine. Some in the family say he arrived in 1848, others say 1848 is his birth year. He is also said to have joined the Army and served as a drummer boy. He lived in OH, IN, and AR after his time in the service. Can anyone help me learn more about the Orphan ships, or how to discover if or when James may have joined the Army? Thank you, P.J.

    3. The NY State Dept of Health in Albany has no vital records for Manhattan. All extant Manhattan records for that era are kept at the NY City Municipal Archives. Registration of births in NYC was not mandatory in those days, and births of children at home were only infrequestly registered. 3. I don't think you can make a blanket generalization. I don't use FTM and don't know what CDs come with it, but have other CDs from Broderbund (publisher of FTM) which have been highly useful. Their World Family Tree series comes under fire because a lot of the family trees on it are innacurate, incomplete, or poorly documented. But hey, these are trees which were submitted to Broderbund by folks like us. (Although I think regular subscriber to this list would be a cut above the average.) 3. Hello, I am confused about how to search for certain records in New York City -- or in Albany. I wrote for my maternal grandparents' death certificates (in NJ) which verified what I knew about their births in Manhattan in 1876 (Jan 1 and Jan 5). I then wrote to the Municipal Archives at 31 Chambers Street in NYC and received back a notice of "no records found." So, now what do I do? Should I write Albany? But do the Albany and Chambers Street offices have the same records? Does Albany even have the NYC records? How does one clearly know whether to write a town/city or Albany? I came up with a blank once at Chambers Street before for my paternal gg grandmother, too, on her death certificate even though I have the exact date of death. Again, would Albany know? Thanks. 2. Karima
    3. Dear Dianne: I love the program itself, but honestly I have found the CDs that came with it totally useless. I did find some of my family, but the information was incorrect. For this reason I have not purchased any additional CDs. In addition, I would not add any information to my data base without knowing (by sourcing) that the information was correct. The old fashioned way of writing for death certificates, marriage records, obituary notices, census records, etc. seems to be the only really good way to get true information, and then even some of that information conflicts with other "documented" sources. It is a struggle, but where would the mystery and the fun of "searching" be if all of the information came to us at the same time? Just my thoughts, Karima Dianne Thomas wrote: > > Just a question of curiousity. 2. I also have Family Tree Maker, and as some have said dates and information can be wrong, but many times it has given me a place to start my searsh. If you find a discrepency with what is on the CD after you have the hard copy in front of you, then you are the wiser. I have been looking for just the "perfect" program and have yet to find talk with anyone who was perfectly happy with what they are using. Jacqueline

I'm not talking of purchasing the other disks that they offer... just about the ones that come with the original software purchase. I'm also interested in how good their technical support is, that they offer. Any comments? Thanks for your input. Dianne T.

    3. I am replying to the following message from J. Steffens: >Cornelis C Bogaert, b. ca 1637 >in Schoonrewoerd, South Holland, Netherlands. >He married Derkje (Dorothea) >Pieterse /Coeymans/. >They came to America sometime before 1641. In 1641 >they were residing in Rensselaerserick, NY and in 1661 they >were residing in Beverwyck (Albany), NY. He died 28 JUL >1665 in Albany, NY. How strange that this very name and topic should come in the mail today, because earlier in the day I sent to Dutch-Colonies an E-mail concerning Cornelis Corneliszen VOS (or De VOS), who married Derkje Pieterse COEYMANS! (I will include the E-mail below.) In the meantime I would like to know where you obtained this information, and where you came up with the name "Bogart" as a last name. Where did you find this information: >In 1641 they were residing in Rensselaerserick, NY and > in 1661 they were residing in Beverwyck (Albany), NY. > He died 28 JUL 1665 in Albany, NY. Sources have become critical at this point as you will see below. I look forward to hearing back. All the Best, Carma ******** Subject: What about Cornelis Cornelis De VOS from Schoendevoert? Date: 9/30/99 1:14 PM BCC: Dutch-Colonies, Dutch-Colonies@rootsweb.com. Some time ago I wrote that there seem to have been a number of people from (Van) Schoenderwoert, who became known as Van Woert & Van Oort, etc. There were some who kept patronymic names, such as Rutger Jacobszen Van Schoenderwoert, who according to family members was the progenitor of the American RUTGERS and RUTSEN families. Now, I have a Cornelis Cornelisz (De Vos)* Van Schoenderwoert who was evidently from there -- South Holland, I believe -- and who probably went back to the Netherlands abt 1665, leaving no progeny here in the Americas. I am hoping 1. Someone knows more about him than I do. (See what little I know below.) And . . . 2. Maybe Cor or Willem, or someone in the Netherlands can help me find more information about him and his wife. So, does anyone know anything about a Cornelis DE VOS* van Schoenderwoert or Van Woert an employee of the Dutch West India Company at Beverwyck, who married: (1) Dirckjen DE VOS a daughter of Pieter Coeymans? She died probably about or before 1663; and he married (2) One of the daughters of Andries De Vos (who may have been a cousin)? We think the daughter's name may have been Ariaantje. They left to go back to the Netherlands shortly after they were married. A letter from Lorine McGinnis Schulze <"Lorine McGinnis Schulze" lschulze@bconnex.net> sent on 12/ 9/ 98 states: >>"Cornelis Cornelis VOS from Schoendevoert, >>widower of Dirckjen Pietersen Coeymans, >>m2 ca 1664 to Catherine DE VOS' younger sister. >>Catherine DE VOS was the d/o Andries DE VOS and had married >>Arent Andriessen BRADT ca 1648, having 6 children with him >>before his death. >> In 1664 Catherine m Barent van Ditmars and only >> a few months later her sister m. Lorine's letter continues: >>"Peter Christoph speculates that he [Cornelis De VOS] >> may have been a cousin [to Andries De Vos] >>According to Christoph, within 2 years of their marriage, >>Cornelis VOS and his wife [Catherine DE VOS' sister] returned >> to the Netherlands. 3. New York City Directories are easily available on microfilm at a LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. They were published annually. Look in the FHL Locality Catalog under "NEW YORK, NEW YORK (CITY) - DIRECTORIES" for the film numbers for the years of interest. See: http://www.familysearch.org The original hardbound directories are usually in pretty sad shape after 130 years and libraries don't want to damage them further by photocopying. Note: The Trow's New York City Directories for the mid-19th C say, e.g., "For the year ending May 1, 1870" but bear a copyright date 1869, indicating the data was gathered in the months preceding May 1869 and published then, with the directory intended to be used until the next edition came out in May 1870. casey1@mindspring.com wrote: >I have tried for an inter-library loan - and got nothing.
