Hello, To officially start off my genealogy Research for my NY ancestors. I am going to start off with my ancestors that left the Empire State and headed to Virginia. There were four such families involved in that exodus. I will pick one and work on him with your help untill exhausted before moving on down the line. I hope this combination effort will help many that have families that tied in with mine or might have traveled west when mine did. I would like to start with my Dutch ancestor Hendrick "Henry" Kortright (Cortright/Cutright/etc.) Born Aug 1717in Rochester twp, (then Raysester), Ulster Co., New Netherlands. I do have a note that his parents (Petrus "Pieter" Kortright and Marytjen "Mary" Van Garden) were living in Rochester in 1717. He was Baptised in 22 Sep 1717 with Witnesses: Louwerens Kortregt and Zara ten Eyk (His Uncle and Aunt). He married on 28 DEC 1739, in Rochester twp to Elizabeth "Liddie" Hornbeck. Then in 1753 became a "Ensign of Foot" for the community. About 1760 Henry and Liddie made the Journey to Virginia. They had several children there. Here are a few notes: > I believe Hendrick Kortright was a late comer to the South Branch > arriving around 1760/61. This date comes from sworn statements made by his > son John at a later date ie: pension application for military service. If anyone has more information to add, please post it. Jay Steffens

Can you help me? My grand father imagrated to NYC in 1866 at the age of 21. His birth date was Apr/14/1845. His name was Henry John Johnson (english version). He was naturalized in 1872 and married Katie Otis from NYC in 1872 in NYC. Her father's name was H. Otis, a native of NY. Her mother's name was Martha Freemore. I submit this above information hoping it is sufficient for some site to use in making a hit covering some of his activities and history while he was in NYS. Perhaps it might even be an avenue back to his ancestors in Denmark. I'm further hoping that you or any other one on the list reading email can assist getting or pointing me to all the . marriage documentation. Oh yes, the big date - on or about Jun/18/1878 they were married in NYC. Thanks loads, TomJohn01@aol.com W. Johnson
I am fairly new to this list. My name is Ann Terrill and I am looking for information on the family of George Washington KAYLOR, born in 1783, probably in New York. He married a Mary PRINGLE or BRENDLE in 1804 in New York City at Trinity Lutheran Church. His children were: Born Died Spouse George 1805 1811 William 1806 1855 in Brooklyn Phillip 1808 James 1810 1850 George 1812 Henry 1814 1814 Mary 1818 1849 Manley SMITH Henry 1819 1834 John Clinton 1821 1864 Mary MCBRYDE Warren 1823 1884 Margaretta BETTS Daniel 1825 1898 Sarah MCBRYDE Elizabeth 1827 Joseph PALMER Anthony 1829 I have been unable to find anything earlier than the marriage of George Washington KAYLOR in 1804. Family "history" has it that the family originally came over with Peter STUYVESANT which might indicate a Dutch backgkround. I would appreciate any and all help or suggestions. Thank you. Ann Terrill rterrill@erols.com
Hi, I am new to this list, just joined this a.m. My name is Boyd J. Linhart (I go by Jim) and I am researching the LINHART surname. I am seeking contact with anyone also doing research on the Linhart Surname. I am descended from a Christian Linhart Sr. b. 1722 in Germany, d. 13 April 1810 in Wilkins Township, Allegheny County, Pa. He arrived in the U.S. in the mid 1700's. It is believed that some of his descendants may have moved to N.Y. (I have nothing to prove this, just a speculation on my part - in other words I am grabing at straws.). Iy any of you are also researching the LINHART surname, please contact me <linhart@bellsouth,net> Thank You in advance. Jim Linhart

Hi Dory, Hope this helps, I sent to the Dept of Health and Municipal Archives, and received the same response you received. BUT, stumbled onto a treasure chest at my local Family History Center. In their Library Catalog, under New York , was a WPA project, apparently they made birth index cards to cross reference birth certificates. The years covered run from 1866 to 1897 for both cards and certificates. I ordered the film for PO-TO [for Sullivan] in the year 1886 and found the card for my stepfather, it gave the certificate number then ordered the film that covered that certificate number and found the right certificate and was able to send my sister a copy of her fathers birth certificate. As Charles Sullivan pointed out not everyone registered children's births, this Sullivan family were blue collar workers and Catholic. So give it a try. I pulled the whole listing, so if you want me to check for a film # drop me a line. Good luck in your searching. Alice in AZ
A big thanks to all those that responded to my question! It was a great help indeed!
There used to be, and I believe still is, a 30-day return guarantee on FTM CDs. If you order one and find nothing of your family on it, you have 30 days to return it for a full refund. I have found it! The one I have does just about anything I can think of - and probably others that I can't think of. It is extremely easy to use, as well. It's not a well-known brand, but I really do like it. It's called "Family Ties", and I believe it's available in retail stores. (I bought mine as an update by mail).
