Hi GEN-NYers, I received the message below. Does anyone know the answer? I hadn't thought about it before but Valerie is right, it does sound illogical. I forgot to introduce myself to the list. My name is Patricia M. Bergener, and I presently live in Virginia Beach, VA. I've been doing research on my family for 20 years, and have NY roots on both sides. I have LINK, BOGART, TURNEY, and SMITH ancestors from Saratoga Co., DECKER and CASTON ancestors from Ulster Co, all in the 1800s. These are from my dad's side. >From my mother's side, my grandfather, Matthew Patrick BURNS was born in Brooklyn, his parents were from Ireland (came in during the time frame when there are no indexes to the NY pass. lists). I have traced them back thru the city directories, but haven't found out when they came into the country yet - neither of his parents were on the 1900 census, granddad was in a Catholic orphanage). Other's from my mother's side were in NY much earlier! THORNE, BOWNE, REED, LANNING, HOWELL; all on Long Island in the 1600s, then moved on to Hunterdon, Burlington, and Gloucester Co.s in NJ. Hello, I need the name of the town, please I am wondering if someone would have access to the 1860 Federal Census, for Greene Co, NY. and would look up the name of the town that Chr istina Clark(e) and family were living in. I believe she was the head of the household. The page number is 902 and she is located at #663. Regards and Thank you in advance. Sharon
I am amazed at the number of people searching LYONS but none of them seem to connect. I am searching Thomas E. Lyons married to Cynthia Berdet in Canada. These are the children I know of: William Riley, Almeda, Helen, and Mahala. William was my great grandfather, married to Elizabeth Rhinehart of New York and moved to Michigan from Illinois. His sister Almeda also married in New York to Philip VanConant and came to Michigan. Helen was married to a Pearson. At one time William lived about l5 miles from where I live and is buried in a local cemetery but I have been unable to find his death record. Could some one help me with this family? Alice A. And besides, the SS-5 information is likely to be a whole lot more accurate than the death cert. anyway! It was filed by the person him/herself at a period in life when his/ her memory was probably pretty good, while the Death Cert. is filed by someone else who may not have accurate information and is probably distraught on top of it. In a message dated 99-10-13 01:38:20 EDT, you write: << To: GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com Whatever gave you the idea that what governments do is logical? In the case of New York state being so difficult about obtaining documents I see it as a very logical outcome of illegal immigrants obtaining American documents that allow them to assume American identities. Not only that, our recently dead ancestors' credit histories would be open to exploitation. I applaud New York for being difficult. The other states, as well, all of those who are protecting their citizens from being victimized by the scum who would use ouir hobby to commit illegal acts. We naive genealogists forget there are less than innocent people trying to get our data. Shirley

So far there has not been much response to add to what I presented on Hendrick "Henry" Kortright. There may not be anymore to add. I will post this information for discussion before moving on. >From Gordon Courtright Children of HENDRICK KORTREGT and CATHARINE CROM are: ii. GEERTJN6 KORTRIGHT, b. Aft. 1703; d. Hi Rooters, This book is another from the Memorial On-Line Library I have set up to my parents memory. Dad died many years ago and mother has Alzheimers so she is effectually been gone for many years. The book was printed in 1891 and has 871 pages, I am proofing pages 675 to 700 right now, hope to have the book complete by the end of the month so I can start another of these historical biographies. I have posted this to some of the lists as it is still a work in progress, but have now added another 350 pages and I think have added what may well be a great addition to the site. My thanks to Denise Fredericks who does the Washtenaw County MI site who gave me this lead. I have added a search engine to the LivgenMI site and if say you are researching in N.Y. and have a guess that your families may have passed through Michigan, there are 161 hits....if I typed in New York, I came up with an additional 128 hits....so please do not assume that because this is a Michigan book that your NY people may not be there. I have seen hundreds of references to New York, and about 20 other states, and just about every county in the state of Michigan. While you are at it, I have two small favors I'd like to ask, <g> while doing this a friend in CA is helping a friend of hers and when she saw the link to MI, she gave up because I was the only person seh knew here, as it happened I sent her a link to one of the bios from this book and it was indeed the family she was looking for, so we got her back to Oswego NY about 1830? Name is TONCRAY, and wonder if anyone has any connections to this family that eventually got to Nebraska. Also as you know this site is large and complex, and I would very much like to find some sort of award for the wonderful couple from ISMI who host both of the main sites I do, but.....that being said I would rather make more pages for you guys to use in research than surf, so IF any of you know of such a place to enter them to receive that just honor, I would appreciate the link. I mean they even came in over the weekend late Saturday night when I filled up the server with more data, and so they could make mor space for more genealogical stuff. http://www.LivGenMI.com Home of the 1895 atlas http://www.ChaseNEgw.com Home of the 1891 Shippers Dispatch Gazatteer If you use any of the above or any of the hundreds of bits of information I have put on the net for you.....Your Obligation is to complete your "Hug Homework"! I have been researching New Jersey marriage bonds and posting them to the NJ USGenWeb Archives site. I was surprised at the number of New York residents who married in NJ. As I complete a volume, I will post the NY ones to the mailing list. I'm new to the list, I hope that this is appropriate. NEW YORK CONNECTIONS IN NEW JERSEY MARRIAGE BONDS from microfilm copies of original marriage bonds in possession of NJ Dept. of Education, Division of State Library Archives & History, filmed in 1966. "Marriages are from various counties, and are arranged in groups by surname, but not alphabetical within groups." (Family History Library Catalog; 0888701-0888710) I have capitalized all surnames for ease in identification. When there was a discrepancy with a name in the body of the bond and the signature, the difference of the signature is in parentheses, There were two paragraphs in the document, the first is the bond, and the second is the marriage license, followed by signatures and seals of the bondsmen, and the signature(s) of witnesses to the bond. There are no notations as to when or where the actual marriage took place. An asteric * indicates spelling of a locality as found in document. The time frame covered by these bonds is generally 1735-1797 The cost of the bond and marriage license appears to have been about 1 pound, 4 shillings. The 500 pounds was the amount that the bondsmen were indebted to the government in the event that there was a claim of fraud against one of the parties being married.
