Multiply this number by 2. 3. Add 5. 4. Multiply it by 50. 5. If you have already had your birthday this year, add1749. If you haven't, add 1748. 6. Last step: Subtract the four-digit year that you were born. Dear Friends, Thank all of you who sent me notes on SWACKHAMMERs and the possible nature of migration between New Jersey and New York state in the late 18th century. I think I have touched base with all of you personally, but if I have inadvertently missed anyone, please accept my thanks here. The SWACKHAMMERS are certainly a closer knit family than I ever imagined; my grandmother would have been delighted! One of my respondents suggested that I post the migration comments, or a summary on the list. Here goes. Land was certainly the most frequently noted factor behind the migration from New Jersey to New York in the late 1700's, early 1800's. Both more land and cheaper land. While we usually think of folks moving west for more land, at the beginning of the nineteenth century movement to the large neighboring states of New York and Pennsylvania was probably even more common. It was also noted that New Jersey was particularly hard hit by the Revolutionary War, and this disruption might also have encouraged migration. Additional comments were more individual in nature. A couple of people noted that second or younger sons, who hadn't inherited land, might have found it advantageous to move a distance to start out on their own. Since my migrant, Balthus SWACKHAMMER, was a younger son of a third marriage I found these comments of particular interest. Since I find the "whys" of genealogy as fascinating as the "whos", I will be inquiring further into these migration patterns and the history of New Jersey and New York. Any suggestions for my further reading and research are welcome. Thank you all again for your thoughtful comments. Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, MD
Hello again, I am ready to move on from Hendrick. But we can still discuss new information if anybody has anything to offer that has been following my posts. I recieved a beautiful scan of a Deed with both Hendrick and Elizabeth Kortrights signatures on it clear as day. Since I mention Elizabeth let's move on to her. Elizabeth "Liddie" Hornbeck, married Hendrick "Henry" Kortright on 28 Dec 1739 in Rochester (Raysester) twp, Ulster Co., NY. This was during the Governship of William Crosby, and when Albany was appointed its first English Mayor, Edward Holland. It would then change in 1747 when the silversmith, Jacob C. Ten Eyck would be the first Dutch Mayor of Albany. Elizabeth and children went with Henry West to Virginia and the South Branch community about 1760 where they bought land as mentioned in the deed above. This area would later become Hampshire County WV. Elizabeth Hornbeck was born May 13th 1722. Five years younger than her husband. She was born in Kingston, NY. Her parents were Johannes "John" HORNBECK and Orseltjen "Urseltje" WESTBROEK. She had Eight Brothers: Benjamin, Richard, Daniel, Samuel, Jonathan, Isaac, Abraham and another Bejamin. She also had two sisters: Annatjen (who married Jeems Simson) and Lena "Eleanor" (That married Cornelius Cutteract). ((He might be a Cutright??)) Elizabeth's Father died eight years after her and Henry moved out west at the Manor of Fox Hall, Kingston, NY (I would like to know more about this place). At least four Brothers went West with her and Henry: Richard, Daniel, Samuel, Jonathan, Abraham and possibly Isaac. That is about all I know about this lovely lady. Maybe we can add to her history. Your cousin, Jay Steffens
A friend, Theo Howells, in England is working on her family history. She believes that a family member, Thomas Parker, died while a student at Madison University (now Colgate) in Hamilton, NY. She can narrow down the suspected date of death to between May 2, 1868 and July 7 1868 because of references in family letters. Tom Parker may also be buried in Hamilton since Theo can't find him in any family plot. Does anyone know what records are available in Hamilton, NY that could help me help Theo find Tom Parker?
