Hello All, Does anyone know where I might be able to locate membership information for the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) in Michigan? My great-great-grandfather Nathaniel PERKINS and his brother George Washington PERKINS, served in the 10th New York Heavy Artillery, made up of men from Jefferson County, New York. After the war, they settled in Saginaw and Genesee Counties, respectively, and continued their affiliations with the G.A.R's "A.L. CARVER" post somewhere in Michigan. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Kevin O'Brien Laguna Hills, California Researching: Dorchester Perkins Shannon Van Schaick Warner Ivall Lowe Gauley
My father and I are planning a trip to NYC to visit the Department of Records and Info. Municipal Archives on Charles Street. We're thinking that we would like to hop on the Staten Island ferry and possibly take the subway. Does anyone know if there is a subway stop fairly close to the archives? Any other tips you folks have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kathy Sadler
Hello I'd like to find what became of a branch of my family who are supposed to have been in New York at one time. Most of my information comes from an old FRASER family tree, drawn up in the early 1880s, and the only substantiation I have of this branch is of the births of the original couple while they were still in Scotland. Why don't I have more place names? Because this information is out on the twigs of the tree and space was running out. Alexander FRASER b 8 Dec 1807, Markinch, Fife, Scotland, on 25 March 1832 in Edinburgh, Scotland, he married Elizabeth Chalmers who was born 25 December 1812 in Markinch, Fife, Scotland. Alexander was a baker and flour merchant, and the couple emigrated in 1832 to Chicago. They had children: Agnes FRASER b 4 Jan 1833 New York, on 1st May 1855 she married James IRONS who was born 13 Feb 1827 and who died 17 March 1877. They had children: Alexander F IRONS b 2 March 1857 d 25 July 1857 Alexander Fraser IRONS b 25 March 1858 Christina Ballingall IRONS b 29 Jan 1860 Elizabeth Chalmers IRONS b 29 Jan 1860 James IRONS b 13 March 1862 Agnes Fraser IRONS b 25 March 1864 d 29 April 1867 Jannette Heriot IRONS b 13 April 1866 William Ramsay IRONS b 17 May 1872 Charles Sumner IRONS b 2 March 1874 Jannette FRASER b 18 Dec 1837, d 7 October 1879, married 29 September 1863 to Alexander BROWN who was born 29 August 1832. They had children: Alexander F BROWN b 23 Nov 1864 d 10 Feb 1870 Thomas Park BROWN b 29 Jan 1867 Elizabeth Clark BROWN b 10 Jan 1870 Jannette BROWN b 18 Jun 1872 Steuart BROWN b 18 Sep 1874 Margaret Park BROWN b 25 Jul 1877 Selina M BROWN b 24 Sep 1879 d 22 Sep 1880 William FRASER b 2 Oct 1839 Elizabeth FRASER b 3 Aug 1843, on 27 Dec 1864 she married James STEWART from Edinburgh, b 24 Jun 1842. He died 13 April 1880. They had children: Elizabeth Chalmers STEWART b 11 Nov 1865 James Pringle STEWART b 11 Jun 1868 Margaret Pringle STEWART b 14 April 1871 Clarence STEWART b & d 15 April 1874 Henry Clark STEWART b 7 Jan 1876 James Chalmers FRASER b 26 Sep 1848 Is anyone researching this family? Does anyone know what happened next? I have no further information about this family apart from Alexander FRASER's extensive ancestry in Scotland. Polly Hamilton
I received several messages that did not address the question. http://familysearch.org/fhlc/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitysearch&columns=*,180,0 I want to make clear the question is on the PLACE search problem. Please do not discuss this on the list. Just report your problems direct to me so I can take the printed-out messages directly to the person responsible for the mess. State what browser you use (Microsoft, Netscape, AOL, etc) and type of computer you use along with the problems you encountered (such as missing information, empty information, error messages, etc.) W. I would like to see any messages from any of you who found to have problem with searching the Family History Library Catalog on the familysearch.org site at any time. I need to know exact problems you have encountered such as incomplete information or missing links or missing information whatsoever, etc, including how many times you had to go back and forth before you finally get the information you requested as well how many times you received the obnoxious error message. Do not discuss this on the list - just send to me off the lists so I can collect them and take directly to the programmers who still don't get it that their server programming is problemic. After all I live in Salt Lake City and I know who the contact person is for this problem. W. David Samuelsen
I need assistance in finding information on Elinor Sarah MCKELLEP who married Benjamin HAGLE in Syracuse, NY on Sept. 27, 1903. I have the marriage certificate and letters written by Elinor saying she lived in Syracuse for many years. She was 48 years old and single at the time of this marriage. Her mother died in Wisconsin when Elinor was very young and the family was split up. I believe she may have gone to New York to live with relatives at that time. Does anyone have access to any local books or records for that area during that period of time? Thanks for any help Kathy McKellep-Lathrop So. California
----- Original Message ----- From: Eileen To: PENNSYLVANNIA-L@ rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 1999 5:58 PM Subject: DUNN/McKINNON Details scratchy but we are used to that aren't we. Please see if any of this rings a bell. Family starts with Father/DUNN and Mother/McKINNON I believe they had two children, a son, (my great grandfather) William Edward DUNN, born in PA. and a daughter who died along with her mother from small pox when William was about 3 or 4 years old. When William was 8 his father was run over by a train and killed. William was raised by his grandparents until they died then he was raised by his Aunt Maggie. William became the head chef in a big hotel I believe in Buffalo New York. He married Alice Mary Kinnon who was born on Jan 9 (?year?) in Northern Michigan in the timber country. Their daughter, my grandma, Doris Lillian DUNN was born 6 Jan 1906 in Colden, Erie County, New York. The family moved to Galt,California in 1914 or 1915 where he had a farm, a part time dairy and a milk route. William and Alice divorced and he moved to the Ozarks in Arkansas where he died. Thank you Eileen
Check the description of the microfilm either at the beginning of the film or in the FHL Library Catalog. If it was filmed at the County Clerk's Office, then it is the copy made for the County Clerk. The Federal copy (which I think for 1850 is the original) will say National Archives at the beginning of the film. I have a travelpass for a Christoph Wilhem Herbst and his wife to travel by way of Bremen to emigrate to America. He was a resident of Vacha, a Lohgerber(Tanner). 40 years old, 5"4, blonde hair, two burn scars on right hand. Released from servitude to the Grand Duchy--Dermbach, Aug. 4, 1865. This was kept by our great grandparents Klaffky/Lohn and passed down. We do not know the connection to our family. Is there a Herbst out there who might be looking for this piece to their puzzle?
Hi Eunice, The B stands for his mother's maiden name: Bloomfield. How much do you know about him and how much do you want to know? My maiden name is Jervis and I have a book (part of the book anyway) with some of his genealogy in it. It also has an article on his career. I also have a book "John B. Jervis, An American Engineering Pioneer" by F. Daniel Larkin that talks all about his career. Port Jervis, NY (very beautiful town, by the way) was named after him. John b. 14 Dec 1795 (probably in Huntington, Suffolk, New York) m. 3 Jun 1834 to Cynthia Brayton m 2nd 16 Jun 1840 Eliza R. Coates d. 12 Jan 1885 He is the son of Timothy & Phebe (Bloomfield) Jarvis...I have dates and children on them. Timothy is the son of Jonathan and his 2nd wife Charity White or Whites. Jonathan is the son of William (my 10th great grandfather), who is the son of Jonathan, who is the son of Stephen. I have more info on most of these people, however, I have not checked the veracity of this book. I will be leaving this afternoon for a Thanksgiving trip, and will be back home on Saturday. Let me know if you want more info. Beth Perazzo<glenbeth@phonewave.net> "Eunice M. Young" wrote: > > A quick question for you knowledgeable New Yorkers. What does the "B" stand > for in John B. A quick question for you knowledgeable New Yorkers. What does the "B" stand for in John B. Jervis? If you have birth and death dates I would appreciate that, too. He was an engineer on the Erie Canal. Thank you. Eunice emy@oregontrail.net Researching McKinney, Feland, Anderson, Riggs, Boyer, Holman, Robinson
Dear List, First: I found ggg grandfather in 1881 UK Census and his birthplace was listed as Putnam Co., NY. He was born in either 1850 or 1851. Would his birth have been registered in New York State? His parents were British citizens. Second: I picked up a book: The Cousins' Wars by Kevin Phillips. The first several chapters are extremely helpful for anyone searching ancestor's roots in terms of where to begin looking in England. Sharon K. Hi NY List-- I just wanted to report on my trip to the Library and Archives in Albany today. It was wonderful!! I found lots of intriguing information, both in the Vital Records department, and through perusing the various NY state census records on microfilm. (There's so much more in the library and vital records area, I barely scratched the surface.) Thanks to all the great tips I had from lots of people ahead of time, I knew how to get there, where to park, that I needed to bring dimes, be organized as to what I was looking for, record those birth, marriage and death certificate numbers, and then, get right over to the Dept. of Health to submit requests for the records, along with a check for payment, in person. The drive was only about an hour and fifteen minutes from my parents' home in Ulster Co. and you can be assured I will be making the trip again some time! Thanks again for your help and if anyone wants more specifics on my trip, feel free to ask. Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving, Marilyn Hough Stern (usually in Austin, TX, happily visiting in Kripplebush, NY)
