Thanks, Marty, for the info on the American Antiquarian Society -- Worcester isn't hard to get to -- not like having to go into Boston - I don't think anyone out there can envision the tremendous resources at Indiana's Allen County Public Library - Genealogy Dept. They, too, have originals of many, many family histories and rare books galore. As far as the periodicals are concerned, I believe they will still copy from their materials and I believe, they do so at a very reasonable charge. There used to be a form to fill out for out-of-towners -- providing space for 5 requests on one sheet. The larger libraries in the USA have the PERSI program's wonderful indexes in hardbound volumes -- PERSI - stands for Periodical Resource Index. They used to issue a new volume each year, but since most people have a computer now, I'm not sure if they still do this. All the volumes are available on the Genealogy Floor at the library in Ft. Wayne. I believe the indexes are all accessible via the many in-house computers. I was in the Syracuse Genealogy Library on Salina St. three years ago and noticed the Indexes there. But, I warn you, you can spend a whole day just looking at the Indexes -- you'll come away with a mile-long list of articles you will want to order. Check the larger libraries in your area for these PERSI Indexes. Shirley Farone My huge website highlighting Jefferson County, N. Y. Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~twigs2000
Shirley Farone <[email protected]> wrote: "The Allen County Library at Ft. Wayne, Ind. most likely has this magazine, as well as most periodicals of this order. This is an unbelievable library". I agree. One of the best in the country! I was there two weeks ago. I never pass through that area without spending at least a half day there. As for ACPL loaning periodicals or doing lookups...you'll have to ask them, as I don't know their policy. Considering how busy they are and that they may not have copies of periodicals...I wonder whether they'd loan them. ACPL is one of those "hidden resources", like the American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, which doesn't go in for periodicals, but claims to have 95% of the family genealogies ever published in this country. I tested AAS, by asking for the Alfred Martin genealogy of 1912 and the Samuel Denison genealogy of 1884, knowing that both were thin, small genealogies published just for family. They brought me ORIGINAL copies of both. Now I believe their claim. They've also expanded recently, and might not even be open to the public yet because of the expansion. I'm not sure about that. If you want to look for things not found elsewhere, try ACPL and AAS. They're great! Marty Irons PS: Thanks to author/lecturor Ron Bremer, who first clued me in that these great resources existed.
Kathy and others: The Allen County Library at Ft. Wayne, Ind. most likely has this magazine, as well as most periodicals of this order. This is an unbelievable library. You can either order what you need from Ft. Wayne (at least one used to be able to do this) or use your subscription to Ancestry.com (don't know how that works). Best to go here to find out more: http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/genealogy/persi.html Or use your www.google.com Good luck. Shirley Farone A giant website concerning Jefferson County, N. Y. Albany is a wonderful place to do research, with the NYS Archives and the NYS Library. The Archives has the NYS Vital Statistics. Until this year, it was the only place to access births, marriages and deaths for NYS beginning in 1880. However, not all jurisdictions reported to Albany at first. NYC is not included, if I remember correctly. One advantage to research in Albany is that you can walk over the the office to request (order) certificates. ($11 each) They will come in the mail within a few weeks unless the researcher is on vacation. It takes months if you order by mail! The NYS Vital Statistics are now available in Rochester, and I think Syracuse, but this is new this year. Another favorite resource of mine is US Government Patents. They have indices in the NYS Library, where you can look up by name or by type of invention. Get the information, and then go get the microfilm for the date and number. I found patents held by many relatives. You can print them out. Newspapers----they have most of the old newspapers on microfilm. You can fill out a form and order up the microfilms that you want to look at. I have found many obits, etc. Search on the website for the holdings, so that you can save time when you get there. The librarians are very helpful, and there is usually a volunteer from a genealogy club there who can help you get your bearings. Good luck with your search! Anne Trabold Melbourne, FL
Jim Millard has done it again! "The Secrets of Crab Island" is the latest addition to Jim's marvelous web site (it's a whole web ring!!!), "America's Historic Lakes". First and foremost, if you haven't visited the main site itself, you're really missing something terrific. Here's that URL: http://www.historiclakes.org/index.html Now then... Crab Island is a tiny island one mile off the NY shore. That's a hefty distance in these times even, but during the War of 1812 it was "a fur piece" indeed. It was during that time period that at least 149 men (both British and American soldiers and sailors) were buried there following their deaths during the Battle of Plattsburgh. And for those of you who are genealogists Jim even provides a list of the names and ranks of those presumed buried there! The War of 1812 wasn't the only occasion on which the island saw military action either. During the Seven Years' War the lake surrounding Crab Island was the scene of a naval battle between the French and the English. There were landings on the island, and perhaps even Lord Jeffrey Amherst himself trod the limestone of Crab Island. But I'll let Jim tell you the story... Jim has worked long and hard on this series... and I do mean SERIES. There are ten major parts to this work including the entire history of the island back to prehistoric times. Yes, indeedy, Jim goes back the fully 450 million years to discuss the geological history of this tiny island. He then goes on to chronicle the significant events that took place on this small rock in Lake Champlain (okay, well, it's forty acres in size, but that's tiny in geological terms). One thing that's especially nice about Jim's series is the photos. At each and every step along the way there are photos (and you can click on the thumbnail photos to enlarge them!) to help illustrate the particular subject... From the prehistoric rock formations to the dilapidated monument to photos of the Connolly family that lived on the island as its caretakers between 1908 and 1915, all can be seen and enjoyed. For the efforts to preserve Crab Island Jim gives due credit to Jim Bailey, Plattsburgh City Historian, James Dawson and an Ad Hoc Committee of area citizens. The Students at Broad Street School even got in on the action applying pressure to the State of New York to step up to the plate and take care of this hallowed ground where American and British dead lie in unmarked graves. Thanks are also due to Roger Harwood, who, out of the goodness of his heart, battles the poison ivy and other natural hazards to maintain the area around the monument on Crab Island. Enough of my prattling. You can tell I'm excited about Jim Millard's "Secrets of Crab Island". He's too modest to tell all of you about this himself, but it has to be told.... This is great work!! Go see it! Here's the URL for "The Secrets of Crab Island": http://www.historiclakes.org/crab/crab_intro.htm Enjoy! Susan
Can anyone tell me how I can get information regarding Alton B Parker, who was a Supreme Court Judge. Thank you, Patty "Genealogy is the art of irritating the living and confusing the dead!"
Thanks Joy. I know my grandma always used that term. But wasn't sure what it meant in relation to a boy. By the way, is everyone getting doubles of their messages? Sarah
Sarah, I have always understood this to mean shirtwaists, which were women's blouses. If I'm mistaken, I hope someone will tell me. Joy Sarah Wasiura wrote: > Just curious.
