Sharon Poole Sherrick was kind enough to pass along this tidbit: >From the Rochester Daily Union and Advertiser Rochester, Monroe County, New York JUNE 13, 1900 BAKER & IRONS. Miss Mamie C. BAKER and Jay F. IRONS were united in marriage on Tuesday evening, June 5th. Miss Clara HO?MAN, cousin of the bride, acted as bridesmaid, and Lucius IRONS, brother of the groom, was best man. Mr. and Mrs. IRONS will make their home at No. 213 Mt. Hope avenue. Does anyone recognize this couple and have any info on their parents and/or descendants? Jay might have been my 1st cousin twice removed, born ca 1872, possibly in Norwich NY, son of Daniel W IRONS and Bessie/Betsy ARNOLD, grandson of John F IRONS and Mary M CAULKINS, both of whom are buried in Cazenovia, Madison, NY.. If so, Jay would have had two older sisters, Kittie and Mary...and possibly other siblings I don't know about. I would dearly love to contact any of this Jay F IRONS' living descendants, to share what I know about the IRONSes of central NY. Marty Irons Goshen NY

Lybolt, the wife of Alonzo Lybolt died at her home in Cahoonzie this morning of a complication of diseases. Mrs. Lybolt was born in the town of Highland, Sullivan County NY on March 18, 1837, and was therefore, past 76 years of age. She was the daughter of Wilmot Clark and Mary Van Auken Clark, and nearly 50 years ago was married to Alexander Simpson, who was a well-known hotel man in Sullivan county, and who afterwards conducted the hotel where C. L. Dedrick now lives in Sparrowbush, and the old Boulton Basin House, until the time of his death. The decedent continued to conduct that hotel after Mr. Simpson's death until she was married to Mr Lybolt in September 1885. One Sister, Martha Clark Avery, of Monticello, survives her; also an adopted daughter Frances Edwards, wife of Harry Henlon, of this city. There are also a number of nephews and nieces, children of deceased brothers and sisters. The funeral will occur at The residence Friday Afternoon at 2 PM. The internment will be in Sparrowbush Cemetery. ( No grave marker was found for Clara C. Lybolt in Sparrowbush Cemetery. It is possible that she is buried with Mathilde Ann Billings Lybolt, Alonzo's first wife. ) ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hello all, The Italian Genealogical Group is pleased to announce that there is now a new searchable database up on our web site. Naturalization Records for the Southern District Court of NY http://www.italiangen.org/default.stm (then click on the "DATABASES" button) This database contains over 300,000 records (it will eventually grow to over half a million). It contains the index to naturalization records for the years 1926 to 1950. It covers both Manhattan and the Bronx. This index was only made possible with the hard work of many volunteers. It's their way of giving something to the genealogical community. This makes the 4th database that is now on the IGG web site. We also have the indexes to naturalization records in Nassau County, Suffolk County, and Military Camps of the Greater NY area. A database of this size is *very* slow to access so be patient when you access it. A Colonial Toy Story September 15th In the colonial period, life was filled with work, but wasn't always hard or boring. Early Americans knew how to turn work into fun by singing or telling stories, having contests, and playing games. What better way to experience the essence of colonial childhood than to join Sherwood House docent Betty Morgan and Yonkers Historical Society Trustee Bob Wilson in a celebration of the life of a Sherwood House child? Betty Morgan will present a workshop demonstration of a variety of toys children used and games they played during Colonial times. High school English teacher Bob Wilson will use this opportunity to share the skills utilized in his studies of one of his childhood interests — Circus Arts. Demonstrating the use of various entertainment techniques in practice since the middle ages, Dr. Wilson will share his expertise in juggling, stilts, balancing, and the unicycle. Our special guest that afternoon, Dave the Magician, through the age old art of magic, will thrill the audience with his illusions at 1:30 that afternoon. This is a unique chance to experience part of the life of a Sherwood House child. Come join us on Sunday, September 15th. Sherwood House, located 340 Tuckahoe Road (at the southbound entrance to the Sprain Brook Parkway) in Yonkers, is one of the few remaining pre-Revolutionary War tenant farmhouses in the New York Metropolitan area. It was built about 1740 by Thomas Sherwood on land leased from Frederick Philipse and was purchased in 1801 by Yonkers’ first physician, Doctor John Ingersoll. Historic Sherwood House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned and maintained by the Yonkers Historical Society and is open for tours on Sundays from 1 -4 pm through October 6th, or by appointment. All Sherwood House events are free and open to the public. For information, telephone the Yonkers Historical Society at 914-961-8940.

Can anyone give me the subject headings for the Agricultural Statistics pages of the NY 1875 Census (for Hartwick, Otsego Co)? I've found Jabez Chapman at 78 listed as a laborer (he'd been a blacksmith most of his life). Yet he's listed also in Agricultural Statistics. I was able to read a 1 in Column 45; a 50 in Column 48; and a 200 in Column 49, but that was all. I've checked Bill Dollarhide's The Census Book as well as Florence Clint's New York Area Key (an excellent book, btw), as well as some info I've garnered over the years from the internet and other sources. TIA Jean

Hi All, If your interested in following the progress of the changes at Ellis Island I would suggest checking the Avotaynu Newsletter (Nu?What's New?) Archives. http://www.avotaynu.com/nu.htm This Newsletter has been reporting all the latest information and has included a statement from The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SLEIF) in their Sept. 4 Edition. Members of the Avotaynu organization are in contact with both Steve Morse and Ellis Island and are trying to work with them on a solution which is outlined in the same edition. I have signed up for the Newsletter not only to follow the progress of the changes at Ellis Island but after reading a few of their previous ones I found that they are packed with interesting information helpful to just about anyone who is doing research. One further consideration I plan to point out in my letter of outrage to Ellis Island-Statue of Liberty Foundation is that using the search mechanism they have on their page takes a huge amount of on-line time. Checking each possible spelling only two at a time, entering the dates, entering the age-range, entering the ship's name, all separately, keeps each user "attached" to their site for much longer than when using Steve Morse's all-in-one search. This can easily cause site crashes because more people will be on at the same time. This does not seem like a plus for them in my book! Joy Weaver
Re: Major Changes to Ellis Island Search and Save Capabilities I have just read some very disturbing news about changes at the Ellis Island site. The Save function for the manifests have been disabled and Steve Morse's site which gave us some tremendous search options has been shut down due to a threat of a lawsuit. I checked out the sites and found that this was true. I have some comments on both issues. First, the ability to save the manifest allowed researchers to enlarge the copy and read the small notations. It is impossible to read much of the manifest as it appears online even in it's largest form. Without reading where and who the person lived with before they immigrated or the person and final destination of the ancestor it is often not possible to verify that we have the correct manifest. Why would we consider paying $25 US ($37 Cdn + $5 for a US Bank Draft) for one page of this document without even knowing if it pertains to our heritage. Also the printed copy is not always as clear as it's digital counterpart which can be enlarged to 2-3-4 or even 500 times it's original size. Second threatening Steve Morse with a lawsuit if he doesn't close his site sounds like bad business practice to me. Steve has helped many researchers find their ancestors when the search engine on the Ellis Island site failed. Does The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation want us to find the manifests or not? Would it not be a wiser move to hire Steve Morse and use his expertise to set up an online search engine that works well instead of taking away our only search engine that will find some of our manifests? Without Steve's site fewer manifests will be found and if the SLEIF is looking for money from people ordering the manifests then how many orders will they loose if the manifests can't be found? Is this good business practice? A Newsletter concerning the lawsuit is at the end of this e-mail. I feel this is a sad day for Genealogy. The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SLEIF) raised huge amounts of money for the Ellis Island site and used volunteers to do the work. Over 12,000 volunteers from the LDS and many others either for personal reasons or as part of other organizations decided to donate their precious time and money. Now that people are using the site the SLEIF has changed the original policies which may have been instrumental in getting many of the donations. The LDS who I gather may have been their biggest or one of their biggest contributers provides us all with genealogical data at reasonable rates. I wonder if they are feeling good about what is happening now. Reasonable rates are not what I am finding on this site. If your interested in reading more about the volunteers you can go to google and do a search on: Volunteers "Ellis Island" I wonder how many people who donated time and money in the past and would have donated in the future will be rethinking their decision. Futhermore this will probably make it harder for other genealogical organizations to get donations and volunteers for things on the internet. Those of us who volunteer may come to believe that things will change for the worse as soon as the donations are gathered. Is that not what we are being told by these changes? If you want to voice your opinion on these changes I suggest you send an e-mail or letter to The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. [email protected] Or write: The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. Attention: History Center 292 Madison Ave New York, NY 10017 If anyone gets an answer I hope you will post it since many have said that they have not received answers to their questions in the past. =========More about threat of lawsuit================= From: Nu? What's New? News About Jewish Genealogy from Avotaynu Vol. 3, No. 16 - September 2, 2002 SPECIAL EDITION Gary Mokotoff, Editor Steve Morse "One-Step" Site Forced to Shut Down ======================================= Under the threat of legal action from The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SLEIF), Stephen Morse has shut down all of his sites that link to the Ellis Island Database. The Foundation accused Morse of creating a site that performs what has come to be known as "deep linking." Deep linking is the act of linking to a page at a web site other than the Home Page. Deep linking may, indeed, be illegal. In a court case brought in a country of the European Union, it was deemed illegal and, therefore, cannot be performed in any country of the EU. In the United States, a Georgia state law that banned deep linking was ruled unconstitutional only because it overstepped the boundaries of Georgia law which has to be limited to events which occur within the state. A number of years ago, Ticketmaster, a U.S. company that sells tickets to events, sued Microsoft, who was providing deep links to the Ticketmaster site. The case was settled out of court with Microsoft agreeing not to continue the practice. Morse and SLEIF actually came close to an agreement which would allow portions of his site to remain available until they provided comparable service, but the contract they presented him to sign demanded that he admit that what he did was "in violation of the Foundation's legal rights and in breach of the Foundation's terms and conditions...." The contract then stated SLEIF would forgive him for past sins. Morse refused to agree to such terms and decided instead to close his site. Deep linking is a common practice. Every search engine performs the function. Every edition of "Nu? What's New?" includes such links. Web site owners normally do not object to the practice because it has a positive benefit to the site owner. However, this does not mean they cannot reserve the right to request that such a practice be selectively banned. Additional information about this controversy can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/04/cyber/cyberlaw/07law.ht ml, which, of course, is a deep link into The New York Times web site. ======End of Newsletter Editorial ==========
