    2. I have been trying for a long time to find my aunt. I am sure she is deceased but I have no info other than her name and that she lived on Long Island, NY. Anybody have any ideas for me. I know she was still alive in the early 1960's and I think she may have passed early 1970's. Does anyone have access to city directories for Suffolk and/or Nassau counties? I am making them my starting point. 1. anyone that lived after 1937 has a SSI number, and you can search it on ancestry.com and a few other websites. Not only will it give you her ssi # but also her approx date of death (i believe) and the zip code of her last address. 2. there are many many map sites on the internet that you could use to look this up. 3. do u know which cemetery she might be buried in? they would be able to look her up ABC wise and then u would have a date of death 4. if u know the cemetery then call them they will be able to give u the date of interment and the funeral home at least. 5. even if a funeral home goes out of business they still hand their records on to the next guy unless there is a fire. 6.once u get a date of death then u need to check newspapers for obit.s 7. u can also write to the town and get a death certificate. 8.the local libraries have directories u can contact them. but again it depends on where she lived, as to which library u would contact. 9. do a search for her on www.google.com 10.inquire with other relatives and see what bits and pieces u can put together on what you do know. kristina www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com free advice genealogy chats thurs 7pm est.

    2. On 10/7/02 (2:53:46 PM MDT), ????? ([email protected]) asked, I have been trying for a long time to find my aunt. I am making them my starting point." The geography of Long Island can be quite confusing, even to current residents, let alone to those who live in other parts of the country and have never been to the area. Thus, the following ... For a good town-by-town map showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns, read on: Each year, LIPA, as successor to LILCO, publishes a report (the report is published by LIPA, but is written by KeySpan, previously known as LILCO) updating the census population numbers (by using people-per-electric meter ratios) for all the 293 communities on Long Island. There are 2 cities and 13 towns (as well as 2 Indian reservations) in the bi-counties and the 13 towns (3 in Nassau and 10 in Suffolk) are further sub-divided into 95 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 196 hamlets (unincorporated areas), yielding 293 communities (2 + 95 + 196 = 293). ..............Nassau......Suffolk........Total ....cities............2..........0..............2 ...villages.........64.........31.............95 .hamlets..........70........126............196 .....total.........136........157............293 The heart of this 40-page report are maps of each of the 13 towns (3 in Nassau, 10 in Suffolk), showing the true borders of all villages and hamlets (not the postal zone borders) in each town. The facing pages list which communities are villages or hamlets and their populations. (You'll find villages and hamlets that you never knew existed because they are in some other community-named postal zone.) I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone. I consider this the best resource available in understanding the geography and governmental organization of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. You can download a copy of the 2001 LI Population Survey by going to: http://www.lipower.org/community/#Pop. Survey If you will be so kind, please let me know what you think of this report after you have downloaded it. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Sincerely, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    1. Missing Links List - off topic
    2. Jean Snow
    3. This is a bit off-topic, but I feel it's important. I'm a long-time subscriber to Missing Links, which is an excellent free news letter, valuable to genealogists. Evidently due to the RootsWeb merge with Ancestry.com it was dropped from RootsWeb support. $$$, of course! I'm copying the editor's message from the Oct 6 issue here (and sending this as well to the other 11 lists I subscribe to). I urge all of you who don't subscribe, to look at a past issue at < http://www.petuniapress.com/> You may find you want to subscribe and support this valuable genealogical newsletter: Jean Chapman Snow LETTER FROM THE EDITOR. Perhaps you noticed that after the 1 September 2001 change from a mailing list of nearly a million at RootsWeb to a mailing list elsewhere starting over from scratch, the circulation of MISSING LINKS peaked 11 months ago at around 18,300, since when it has lost ground, inching inexorably toward oblivion. As there is no income from this effort, there are no funds for advertising. Clearly word-of-mouth isn't working very well, as the circulation has dwindled to about 17,000. Fewer readers mean fewer articles, stories, letters, and small miracles. The "staff" consists of one person, your editor. It is frustrating to spend as much time and to work as hard to continuously diminishing effect in these reduced circumstances as I did with nearly a million readers and a salary. I can't continue much longer as things are. Petunia Press needs to attract more advertisers or devise another way to generate income. Advertisers like lovely large numbers, which Petunia Press cannot offer them. Of course, MISSING LINKS and SOMEBODY'S LINKS will never be able to compete with the big guys (RootsWeb, Ancestry, et al.), but five years ago or so, before its move to RootsWeb, the circulation of MISSING LINKS was 25,000+. A return to the status quo ante RootsWeb would be a long stride forward and might make enough of a difference. Every week I implore you to tell your friends about MISSING LINKS and its offspring SOMEBODY'S LINKS, and how to find them at Petunia Press http://www.petuniapress.com/. While I have not drawn a line in the sand, the end of this year is a target date for reassessment and decision-making that is rattling around in the back of my mind. So, there you have it. If you would like for MISSING LINKS and SOMEBODY'S LINKS to continue, please do what you can to help spread the word. Thanks.

    1. Allen Co. Public Library Temporary Closing Announcement
    2. Marty Irons
    3. Please pass the word...one of this country's greatest genealogical collections will be "off-line" for at least six weeks. If you've never been there, and you get a chance, do go and plan to spend a minimum of a half day. You'll be overwhelmed by their collection. Relayed by Marty Irons, who loves that facility. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Date of Temporary Closing Announced Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Historical Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library will close for relocation on Saturday, December 14, 2002 at 6pm. The department will remain closed through the month of January 2003. This is to allow time to move all our materials to our interim location. The current building will be going through renovation and expansion. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Will materials be available? ----------------------------------------------------------------- All our research materials will be available up until Saturday, December 14 at 6pm. At that time the department will be closed so we can move all our materials to our interim location. When the library opens at that location, we will have all our books, microforms and periodicals ready for research. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Why will we be closed? --------------------------------------- Closing the department will allow us to move the whole collection at once instead of doing it piecemeal. This will ensure that the materials you are coming to Fort Wayne to use for your research will be available when you arrive, offering the full collection for our researchers. If we moved pockets of materials, what you needed for your research might not be available. By moving the whole collection at once it will ensure that the materials you are interested in will be available until we close on December 14th, and when we reopen in late January 2003. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Where will the interim location be? ---------------------------------------- The interim location of the Allen County Public Library will be at 200 East Berry St., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Locally, it is called Renaissance Square. It is 5 blocks to the east from the current library. There will be limited free parking available; there is also a pay parking garage across the street and more than 150 metered spaces in close proximity. --------------------------------------------------------------- What will the interim location be like? --------------------------------------- One of the most exciting things about our interim location is that the genealogy collection will be a browsing collection. All the materials will be out and available for the researcher to retrieve them. Materials will not have to be paged; the shelves will be open. ---------------------------------------------------------------- How long will we be in the interim location? --------------------------------------- The projected time frame is 2-3 years. --------------------------------------------------------------- How can I find out more information? --------------------------------------------------------------- Visiting the library web site http://www.acpl.lib.in.us or phoning the department at 260-421-1225 is the best way to get current relocation information. This is a very exciting time for all of us, librarians and researchers alike. Our goal is to keep our patrons informed and continue to offer the highest level of customer service possible now, in our interim location, and in our newly renovated library. For further information, please phone the department or email Curt Witcher, Manager, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected] or Susan Kaufman Tavenner, Librarian, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected] Please publish and/or pass this information on to all others that might be interested. 3. Hi Sarah, New York State has an index to their vital records starting at about 1878. That's the good news. The bad news is that they only have this index at the State Archives at Albany and at the New York Public Library, NYC, as far as I have been able to determine. This index is on microfische, and one could hire a genealogist or researcher to search for a person or persons. The New York State Library or the Albany area Genealogical Society could probably provide you with the name of a genealogist who would be willing to search, for a fee. Of course if you are within traveling distance to either NYC or Albany, you can do the search for yourself. David is right on the earlier vital records, that they are held locally, but also that most of them are only church records. However, many of these have been compiled into books and many others are filmed by the LDS and are available at Family History Centers. I have many question, as to relationships. Hope someone can shed some light on this family plot. A few years ago, I wrote the Cypress Hills Cemetery in s NY,as I had found My G-G-Grandparents, Oliver L.Wilson and Charlotte(Bogert) were buried there(they lived and died on Staten Island). When I recieved a response, almost a year later, I nearly fell to the floor. The plot contained 45 individuals. For a pricey fee (which I paid) I could obtain this list. When I recieved the list, I was in a bit of a shock, the names on the list were not what I had exspected. From the list, I had made some assummtions, no facts yet. I am listing the last names and number of individuals with that last name. The plot was purchased in 1850, and that is the first year of burial the last was buried in 1994. I do have approx. birthyears and some locations where tthis family died. > > >>>>Taylor---22 John D. d 11/5/1850 Joseph d 6/27/1856 Thomas d 1/13/1867 Robert d 2/8/1868 H.
