Someone has already suggested church records in the US and the SS-5 from Social Security. You didn't say you had checked his death certificate, but that could have been where you got the names of his parents. Other sources of information include the family information sheet from the funeral home. It contains the information normally found in obituaries, and more. It may be more specific in his place of birth. If you don't know what funeral home handled his funeral, the cemetery where he is buried may have that information, and it is normally on death certificates. We had a tough one, too - Sophie Anderson or Danielsson (conflicting surnames), from "Stockholm or Uppsala" (not very specific location and wrong), born before 1860 (so her birth wasn't in the extracted birth records). We had her birth date (but it was wrong by a year), the year of immigration, her niece, Marie Danielsson also immigrated and we had her birth date and year of immigration. Her death certificate said her parents were Ander Anderson and Stina (but the information was provided by her husband and his father was Ander Andersson_. We found Marie Danielsson in the emigration records as being from Gillberga in Värmland, and initially dismissed that as too far from Stockholm. Then we found that the US church records had been published, and she was from Gillberga.
