That's an excellent and concise summary of the situation and I think my contact will want to include that in the source documentation. That sort of a situation is a trap for the unwary and, as I am not all that familiar with Norwegian research, it remained as unexplained in my mind. That lack of an explanation caused no harm until I went looking for the bygdebok and then that information became essential.
