On the Rootsweb Norway-L list, we have a Tolken project wherein we collect our files and share our efforts and thus have an upgrade available that is free to everyone. Note that this project is GENEALOGY based, and thus many of the words are archaic Norwegian, or Dansk-Norsk, etc., Bokmål and/or Nynorsk, etc. Also note that Tolken is NOT a dictionary; it was never intended to be, and simple space requirements prevent you from putting in lengthy descriptions for the words. Having words that can mean 7 different things depending on the rest of the sentence does not help either. In these cases, we tend to choose the most common meaning that we find in translating genealogical records. Or words that mean one thing in Bokmål and something else in Nynorsk does not help either. We do not recommend using Tolken to write a letter to Norway; again, it is a translating program only and cannot and does not handle the different grammatical structures. Ergo, the sentences will not be grammatically correct. One has only to translate a few Norwegian sentences to English to learn that there is a BIG difference in English and Norwegian grammar. But as an aide in translating Norwegian records or Bygdebøkers, it is worth far more than the price of the program! Ellen
