    1. [GE-NORDIC] Genealogy and the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, a unique opportunity.
    2. There is a rather significant opportunity brewing if you want to find unknown relatives and ancestors. It has to do with the fact that in less than a year now, the Salt Lake City area will be hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics. As nearly everyone knows, Salt Lake City is home to the LDS Church's Family History Library. Also, the LDS Church is producing a series of CDs known as the 'Pedigree Resource File'. That file continues to grow and will grow by nearly double at present rates by the time the Olympics start on 8 Feb 2002. Now that presents us with an opportunity. If you have not submitted files to the Pedigree Resource File, (you upload them via http:/www.familysearch.org/), then you should if you feel your files are ready at present or will be by approximately by September. Why september? That will allow the LDS Church time to both produce the CDs and post the index of the data to the familysearch.org website by the time the Olympics have started, for the most part. Individual readiness of files may vary, both on when to submit and how much to submit, but because the FHL will be very close to at least one major venue and the public medals plaza (a few blocks), and the fact that 250,000 people plus over the entire two week period, plus significant media coverage, will tell the world even more than it has heard already about the FHL. Downtown will also be the site for some cultural events surrounding the Olympics. There may even be people who will find your data and discover things they did not think existed as far as ancestors or unknown relatives! If not directly then indirectly afterwards. The LDS Church will also be temporarily relocating its 'FamilySearch Center' in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building to another location within the building to make room for a temporary media center for those media people who want to do stories on the LDS Church. The LDS Church, while it has a prominent presence downtown, does not want this Olympics to be known as 'the Mormon Olympics', although there have already been some erroneous media reports to that effect. I for one believe that alot of people have alot of data to share. Please consider contributing your data to the Pedigree Resource Files so that it can be available at this time next year. If you don't think you data will be ready, then that's OK, because you can always submit it later. One should not feel left out because they could not or did not want to submit to the PRF at this time.
