This may be impossible. My grandfather on my mother's side was a Finn by the name of Falk. He and my grandmother separated after 2 weeks of marriage, so his whereabouts are a bit up in the air, but is that name a common one in Finland? MGB -- "My uncle Denis [Lawson] played Wedge. He's so unimpressed with the whole thing it's funny. He came up one day to the set, and as we were walking across the canteen to George, he said, 'He's wearing the same shirt. He's wearing the exact same shirt he was when he directed the first one.'" - Ewan McGregor on Phantom Menace, Star Wars Insider, Issue #41

Perhaps you can show me the right way. I'm searching the german barque "Elvira", a merchant ship. Hermann Hinrich Plate emigrated from Hamburg, Germany to Port Phillips Bay, Australia (Victoria) on the "Elmira". Arrival March 10th 1888. So his naturalisation papers tell it. But in Australia the Elmira couldn't be found. But there was a german barque "Elvira". It left Fredrikstad at December 9th 1887 and reached Port Phillips Bay at March 20th 1888. So it was told in a newspaper. Hamburg archives couldn't find the Elvira or Elmira. If it was a german ship, it had another home port. Perhaps Bremerhaven. It seems that Hermann Hinrich Plate took a ship from Hamburg to Fredrikstad, then the "Elvira" from Fredrikstad to Port Phillips Bay. I tried to find something in the internet, but without success, and got a bit lost. Perhaps you can tell me what to do now. Perhaps postal adress or email adress of the right archives. Or something other. Anke Martina Brauer Wilhelmshaven (North Sea Coast) Germany

"Kjell Høyer" <rex@go.telia.no> writes: > Can anyone translate the Finish word Kuusari to Norwegian; Swedish > or English It is remotely possible that "kuusari" exists as a name, however, it has no contemporary meaning. Should it be "kuussaari", I'd translate it as "granö" in Swedish. Another close one is "kuusaro", err, "granöken" (steppe, actually). > Can anyone translate the Swedish name Tornberg into Finish for me? Tornberg -> Tornivuori, a common enough name in Finland. Please keep in mind that there is a notable swedish-speaking minority in Finland and consequently many names appear in a Swedish form. -- "Det är på tiden att byta hö i skorna." -- rw

I've been "off-line" for about 7 months. Previously I had been in touch with a person from Denmark about this Schultz family. Hopefully, I can make contact again with him - or with anyone else. I'm looking for Johan Nissen SCHULTZ [b.c. 1841, Anslet, son of Nis Johansen SCHULTZ and (we think?) Mette Marie MADSEN]. Johan married Hansine SLIFSGAARD (originally from Stubbum) in Iowa in 1873. About 1874 Johan returned to Anslet where he bought a farm (at least, a tract of land) from his father. A description of the farm that I received: "May be from the Vestermark Farm in little Anslet, Sønderjylland (southern Jutland?). The farm was built in 1673, but in 1837 it was moved 200 metres further east where it still is." The family remained in the Anslet area until about 1890 when they returned to Iowa. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I understand that there is still a SCHULTZ connection living in the area today. Help??
