Hello Pat, I find Støvern Farms in the Sigdal area also in the 1865 Census. I also find them in the Ullensager/Ullensaker area of Akershus in the 1865 Census of Norway. My great grandfather ran some type of cooking school in Arendal. I gather it was to train stewards and cooks to work on the royal boats or something.If anyone has information about this school (it would have been running about 1890-1910) I would sure appreciate it. thanks in advance eric

I've just found the obituary for my great-grandfather, Anders Olsen Stovern (Stoveren). We know there were Stovern farms in the Ringerike area of Norway. This article states that he was born in 1822 in Sakendalen. Is this a city in or near Ringerike? He emigrated from Norway to the US in 1867 - how might I learn from where he emigrated, the ship's name and where the ship "landed" in this country? We "lose" him from 1867 until 1872, when my grandfather was born in Minnesota. Any help will be appreciated! Pat J.

Over the past few weeks I have seen a number of messages relative to producing the special characters used by the Danish language. All of them have described how to create such characters by use of the Alt key plus several keys on the numbers keypad. What I have done on my computer with Windows 98 is to just install the Danish keyboard in addition to the English one. This is easily done as follows: Start Settings Control Panel Keyboard Language Tab Add After clicking the "add" button, there will be a dropdown list showing all of the languages available. Select Danish and click OK. You may be asked to insert the Windows 98 disk but I wasn't -- the new language was simply installed. After installation, you will see a new button in the tray on the lower right corner of the screen. Mine is dark blue with "En" on it. To change languages, simply click on the button and select the new language. Switching back to English is just as easy. When using the Danish keyboard, the only characters commonly used on the English keyboard that are no longer available in the usual place are ;,:," and ' (they are available elsewhere). A Danish keyboard map is available for the printing out at http://www.macromedia.com/support/fontographer/ts/documents/scanda.htm There are other sites available. One can either search using the term "Scandinavian (or Danish) keyboard layouts" or just do what I did at first -- hit the keys and see what you get. Best wishes, Ken Ames
