I'm looking for information about Ingebrigt Haagensen born about 1820-1830 I believe at the Lunke farm, in Stordalen. I have no idea where Stordalen is, and have made several requests about this area, getting Stordal and Stjordal. Ingebrigt Haagensen had moved to the Venn home or farm during the 1865 census. At the 1875 census Ingebrigt's birth place is listed as Lunke, Stordalen. I would love any info about Ingebrigt or Stordalen. Thank you Kimberley

Addition: I am talking about the word "jämte", this word can mean "beside", "next to" but it can also mean "together with", "in addition to". In this case I think it has the second meaning, that is both farms burned down, and that this is the reason the writer thinks they may have been next to each other at that time. If it had the first meaning, then the writer would have known that the farms were next to each other, and he would not have written "ev." Hi, John! I was so excited to finally get an answer to my first ever posting! Thank you for telling me about the Danish newsgroup. I have already looked at it and will give it a try. I have lots of information about my Danish ancestors and Gyrstinge is such a small place (someone mentioned there are only about 50 houses there) that I am naive enough to imagine I could go there and just walk up the street and find out something about my cousins (if there are any). For a detailed description of census records available go to http://familysearch.org I would give you the complete URL but they are so busy at the moment the web site won't open up. However, you can read the Research Outlines for the states you have mentioned online in addition to the United States Research Outline. Read this one first. The 1910 census for your states does not have an index. The 1920 does have an index, so if you order a Index microfilm from the FHL you will be able to find the exact page and line to look at on your next microfilm. The librarians at the FHL will be helpful in making your selection. It is not a daunting task after getting your feet wet the first time. Then you will be the instructor for other researchers. Dave

"Heausaza" is probably a misinterpretation of handwriting. It doesn't look nor sound like any Finnish or Swedish surname. Hensola looks a bit more like a Finnish surname. Could it be Hentola? This surname and village name occurs at least in the parishes of Antrea and Jääski (both ceded to Russia in 1944), as you can find out by searching the (incomplete!) Finnish church records at http://www.genealogia.fi/historia/indexe.htm. His first name seems to have been Matti (in the Finnish church records possibly the Swedish version "Matts"), and the middle name is a patronym indicating that his father had the same first name. Wahala (modern spelling most often Vahala) is a rather common Finnish surname, but it could also have been spelled with umlauts - Wähälä / Vähälä - which is a name of its own, and a common one too. My guess is that "Ryshia Finland" just refers to "Russia, Finland", as Finland was a part of the Russian empire at that time. Hoping this helps, Jyri Kankila

The christening record for my ancestor Grethe Jorine Monsdaughter states that her parents were unmarried when she was born in 1827. Her father is listed as Mons Monsen from the farm Aase in Hoiland Parish and her mother is Guri Borrildsdaughter from Stangeland Vestre. I have found a Mons Monsen from the farm Aase in Hoiland but he is married (in 1829) to a Guri Lorentzdaughter and listed as having 7 children. Grethe Jorine is not among them. I have been able to establish parentage for Guri Borrildsdaughter and believe that she is found living alone on the 1865 census; while the census also shows Mons Monsen and Guri Lorentzdaughter living together. Has anyone heard of the name in ryshia finland? His marriage certificate says matti mattaon heausaza in marinette wisconsin march 16 1889. His wife hannah wahala also came from ryshia finland. One of the children has a birth date before that. Could it be possible they were married in finland before comming to wisconsin? The 1900 census shows his name mattis mattison.The wisconsin pre 1905 marriages database has it as matte mattson hensola. I guess the marriage certficate would be the correct one.
