    1. [GE-NORDIC] Bitting
    2. Rich
    3. Does anyone have information on the family name BITTING in Scandinavia? I believe that this name originated in Germany, but I recently came across a reference to "Olav Bitting" who founded a monastery on the Isle of Man (http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/manx/parishes/keeills/mar1937.htm). I have also seen some entries in the LDS Family Search database for Sweden. My web site is at http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/manx/parishes/keeills/mar1937.htm. Regards, Rich Bitting

But - on the other hand there are very few readers of the Swedish newsgroup, a website with a discussion forum with the possibility to put questions is actually more active than the newsgroup in Sweden, for some reason. If you have details about your ancestors that are precise enough to do research in Sweden, that is if you have found as much information as possible out of the American sources/census, vital records, church records etc, you could try posting there. The website is Anbytarforum (translates something like "exchange of ancestors") http://genealogi.aland.net/discus/ Just go in under the "Discussions in English" - section and follow the instructions. I'm quoting: Welcome to Anbytarforum - The Genealogist's Discussion-board, brought to you by Rötter - the e-zine of the Federation of Swedish Genealogical Societies. This is the place for discussions and debates among genealogists. Below you will find a list of different topics. Click on the one you are interested in. Suggestions for new topics are welcome. Queries about ancestors should be asked in the section Efterlysningar under the heading Landskap (province) in the Swedish section, if you know where they came from. If you do not know this, publish your query under the heading Emigrants. If you have a particular name you are curious about, enter your query under Släkter in the Swedish section. So, I would post to the SE-group and to Anbytarforum. Regards, Eva

    1. [GE-NORDIC] Genealogy and the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, a unique opportunity.
    2. There is a rather significant opportunity brewing if you want to find unknown relatives and ancestors. It has to do with the fact that in less than a year now, the Salt Lake City area will be hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics. As nearly everyone knows, Salt Lake City is home to the LDS Church's Family History Library. Also, the LDS Church is producing a series of CDs known as the 'Pedigree Resource File'. That file continues to grow and will grow by nearly double at present rates by the time the Olympics start on 8 Feb 2002. Now that presents us with an opportunity. If you have not submitted files to the Pedigree Resource File, (you upload them via http:/www.familysearch.org/), then you should if you feel your files are ready at present or will be by approximately by September. Why september? That will allow the LDS Church time to both produce the CDs and post the index of the data to the familysearch.org website by the time the Olympics have started, for the most part. Individual readiness of files may vary, both on when to submit and how much to submit, but because the FHL will be very close to at least one major venue and the public medals plaza (a few blocks), and the fact that 250,000 people plus over the entire two week period, plus significant media coverage, will tell the world even more than it has heard already about the FHL. Downtown will also be the site for some cultural events surrounding the Olympics. There may even be people who will find your data and discover things they did not think existed as far as ancestors or unknown relatives! If not directly then indirectly afterwards. The LDS Church will also be temporarily relocating its 'FamilySearch Center' in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building to another location within the building to make room for a temporary media center for those media people who want to do stories on the LDS Church. The LDS Church, while it has a prominent presence downtown, does not want this Olympics to be known as 'the Mormon Olympics', although there have already been some erroneous media reports to that effect. I for one believe that alot of people have alot of data to share. Please consider contributing your data to the Pedigree Resource Files so that it can be available at this time next year. If you don't think you data will be ready, then that's OK, because you can always submit it later. One should not feel left out because they could not or did not want to submit to the PRF at this time. 2. Jean S. Barto
    3. Hello-- I'm trying to locate the birth record of my maternal grandmother, Ella Straith, born 8 June 1888. Her family was living (probably) in Oslo at the time. I'm getting help from someone in Oslo in trying to locate her birth record, but the search is not going as smoothly as I had hoped. The researcher has looked in a number of parish records in Oslo close by their "last known address" in 1888--and has come up with nothing so far. There's a possibility that my grandmother was born while the family was vacationing at their seaside cottage--but I'm unsure where that would be--was there a particular location close by Oslo where people had their cottages? Unfortunately, there is no one to ask--my mother's been dead for 15 years, and my grandmother's surviving son is senile in Phoenix, AZ. I'm the only one of the "grandchildren" who is interested enough in genealogy to do the research (and, when necessary, pay for help to do it!). My grandmother's SSN application says she was born in Oslo--but I *don't* have her naturalization documents either--which I would take as a better source than the SSN application! On a good note, I've found out quite a bit about my grandmother's life in Norway I didn't know before, and also more of her mother's heritage than I knew before; however, I'd really like to get that *little piece of paper*, and so far, it's eluding me! Thanks-- Jean Barto Newport News, VA

    3. Hi Roberta and Henrik, actually they are one and the same group as everything is crossposted. The swnet-group was there first, but then about 2 years ago (?) a new heirarchy was decided in Sweden, the SE-group system. I think it was originally thought that the crossposting would only last for a while to phase out the old group, but they are still automatically crossposted. regards, Eva Dahlberg ----- Original Message ----- From: <h.rabe@telia.com> Newsgroups: soc.genealogy.nordic Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 3:05 PM Subject: Re: living Danish relatives? from Gyrstinge | On Tue, 6 Feb 2001 23:29:11 -0800, "Roberta L. You find volonteers to do look-up in http://www.slektsbiblioteket.com/english.htm I guess Guri is the 2 years old girl at Østvold, Høyland, in the 1801 census. Bør(r)ild is a rather rare name. There is no Børild on Stangeland vestre in 1801. They have probably moved to Stangeland later on. Mon Monsen is perhaps son of Mogens Larsen, (18) on Aase, Høyland in 1801 census.
