Does this name Ragnar mean anything in Swedish? Ragnar is just Ragnar. But thinking of how they misspelled the other names at Ellis Island they might have heard Ragna when he said Konrad. I admit it is a longshoot, but itŽs my guess. I havenŽt access to the church records for Härnösand or Wiksjö, that would give you the correct names. Sorry. You could try to find them in the LDS collection of films. > Is it that easy to change ones name if they chose so? 3. Hi Kurt, Again thank you! Thanks for clearing up the Greta/Margareta for me. Please excuse my ignorance but on the Swedish 1890 census it shows Karl August Konrad not Karl Ragnar. Does this name Ragnar mean anything in Swedish? Is it that easy to change ones name if they chose so? I do appreciate your help with this because all relatives that would know are now deceased. 3. Hi Kurt, Thank you so much for looking this up for me. I have printed this out & will save it. The only thing that throws me off is the middle name for Anna. 1890 Swedish census claims it is Anna Greta. In swedish language could this be a short version for Margareta? Today I found on the Ellis Island web site & it's close. Peter Jonas Bergstrom - 61 years, contractor, Foreman - born in Sweden came from Nyland. Imm 10/12/1914. Anna Magrete - 62 years, Son Karl Ragna 18 years, Daughter Lillay Sigrid 20 years Meeting son in law Albert Johnson Boston Massachusetts. Again aside for these middle names which don't match against the 1890 swedish census that I wrote in my previous note. I am totally confused. Now to go check out the other names you gave me to see if I can find them in Ellis Island's web site. Or in our census. Thank you again for your help! They were both 61 years old. Jonas Peter was noted as a sheet-metal worker foreman. The source code (1914:248) on the CD seems to be truncated and thus it isnŽt possible to se if any of the children went with them. But searching on the truncated source code, none of the children is listed. It looks like they travelled on their own. There is an Anna L Bergström, 21, from Skönsmon, departing from Göteborg 1895-10-25 to Quebec. Source code 56:447:3181 There is an Oskar Bergström, 20, from Y. Lännäs, departing from Göteborg 1910-11-25 to Boston. Source code 93:472:185 I hope this gives you an opening. Regards Kurt F

    3. Hi......... I've been trying to determine when my gt.grandfather/parents came to the USA. Along with any of their 8 or more children. I have a list sent to me of this family from the 1890 Swedish census. Looking for.... Jonas Petter Bergstrom b 1852 in Wiksjö Wife: Anna Greta Bergstrom Skoglund b 1852 Nils Johan b 1873 Anna Lisa b 1875 Hulda Kristine b 1877 Per Enoch b 1880 Karl August b 1883 Agnes Hildur b 1886 Knut Erik b 1888 Jonas Oskar b 1890 I believe there is another child named Lillian born after Jonas O but I can be wrong. In 1890 census the Home parish is Hernösand, residence Hyresgäster I do know by 1920 Jonas Petter was residing in Dorechester, Massachusetts I would appreciate anything on this family to learn more of them. Thank you for your help! I believe he changed his name to John Green before to applying for US Naturalization. It states: Name: Green, John Nationality: Swedish Age: Not given Length of Residence in US: 14 yr. Date of Declaration of Intention: 11/13/1885 Type of Information: Declaration of Intention type of Court: Circuit So, he would have immigrated to the US about 1871. He must have been a seaman, as he worked around ships in Mobile Alabama, and family rumor says he was a "ships captain", but this is probably false. He may have "jumped ship" abound Mobile, Alabama, but cannot find him in any Mobile, AL records, or the US 1880 Census. He married Catherine Wilhelmena BUERGER in Mobile, AL around 1881. I have not been able to find a copy of the marriage record. All of his children were born in Mobile, Alabama. He drowned 15 May 1896 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, while working around ships. His wooden cross grave marker had his Swedish name "Ljungren". There is no information on his obit that helps with ancestry, only stuff about his drowning, and his family. The LDS Swedish Vital records say: Anton Olof Jonasson Ljunggren, born 22 Oct 1851 Kristianopel, Blekinge, Sweden christened 26 Oct 1851 Kristianopel, Blekinge, Sweden father: Jonas Ljunggren mother: Ingrid Olofsdtr. mit freundlichen Gruessen, Michael near Portland, Oregon Please remove the NOSPAM from my email address when replying

As a side note, "Hansson" is somewhat special in Iceland, as it was (in the 19th century in particular) sometimes used when the father was just not known. ("Hansson" is pronounced like "Hans son", which means "His son"), so it does not necessarily mean the father was named Hans. Tha names "Gestsson" and "Hermannsson" have also been used for the same purpose.

Is there any way to work out from this where he actually lived, or is the system designed to hide this? Regards, Andy

    3. The following ancestor is my Great Grandfather and GGrandmother, parents of my Farmor (Bendikte shown below). I have been able to find marriage and christening information on these ancestors, except for the last child, which I believe may be listed in the Listabøker. I have been able to find this information from the LDS records online, but they do not have the records available after about 1878, so I cannot trace if there were other children after 1878, nor verify if this Jenny Bertilde Johansdatter is in fact a member of this family. What I am asking is if some kind soul would be kind enough to look in the Listabøker on this family and see if there are more children listed for this family, particularly this Jenny Bertilde. I do not have easy access to these books. I *do* have the christening records for all the other individuals shown below in case anyone wants to access the church records so you do not duplicate the work that has already been done. If anyone is willing to look at the church records, I would very much appreciate it if you would check to see if you can find a marriage date for my Grandmother, Bendike Pauline Johansdatter shown below, who married Tønnes Gabriel Johannessen Reppen (born in Reppen but family returned to Skeie in Sirdal). They should have married in 1896, as their first child was born in October of 1896. Both my Grandparents emigrated to Brooklyn, New York City, but their daughter Julia was born in Norway. I have all this information but lack their marriage date as the information is not available. They probably married in Vanse. Thank you.
