There is no city named Asterdalen, but there is a valley in Hedmark county that is called Østerdalen. It is one of the five major valleys in Eastern Norway. The river Glomma runs through it. Finstad may be a farm name that indicates where in the valley your ancestor came from. Good luck Ingrid

    3. Hi Monica ~ It would be rare that a city would be given for a person who emigrated in 1880; more likely, it would either be a farm or a region. That said, I was unable to find a farm or a region in Norway with either the name of Asterdalen or Åsterdalen. However, there is a region known as Østerdalen, which is in Hedmark fylke near Lillehammer. Usually, the last name of a person is either a patronymic name (Jensen, Pedersen) or a farm name. I would suspect that your great-grandfather lived on the Finstad farm, probably when he left Norway. The O. Rygh list of farm names in Norway (http://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_felt.html), lists 14 farms with the name of Finstad. Two of these are in Østerdalen, and I would recommend focusing your research there, on the two farms listed in the Rygh database. A starting point for this are includes the web page of the Nord Hedmark og Hedemarken Lag at http://www.nhohlag.org. Best wishes, John Reindl, Genealogist Nord Hedemark og Hedemarken Lag. monica wrote: > Hi, > > My family records state my Greatgrandfather, Knute H. 3. Ole was not married to my greatgrandmother. I do not know if his wife came to America after him. I cannot see her in the passengerlist. Two of Oles brothers and his sister Louise lived at the home-farm all their life. They were all unmarried. I knew them and visited them sometimes. For some reason Lovise did not like to talk about her brother Ole - therefore I do not know anything about his life in America. Ole was the eldest child in the family, Bernt who Margit mentioned was the next child. Synnøve N. Moreover - most of these thousands of Johnsons are not related to each other. They represent thousands of different families or lineages. Most of them have in common that their father's given name was John.

Virak is listed in the 1801 Census as Virak Gard, Bakke, Bakke, (Stavanger), Vest-Agder, Norway. My question is, is Ovedal the same as Oftedal Gard, Bakke, Bakke, (Stavanger), Vest-Agder, Norway? There is no Ovedal listed per se. Thank you. Ellen

    3. I am looking for information on Alexander Snyder, Sr who came over to the United States from Holland. He arrived in Pennsylvania and had a son named Alexander Snyder, Jr. I found Alexander Snyder, Jr in the 1910 Miracode Index for Pennsylvania. He was 50 years old in the house hold of James Wentz. He had two sons, Loyd 14 and Allen 11. He and his son Loyd disappeared between 1910 and 1920. I am looking for distinct information on this family. Alexander Snyder, Jr married Emida Wentz. Nothing else is known about either him nor his father. If you have anything that may be helpful to me please email me. Thank you!
