    3. Dave, Odd Braathun led me to this link. It is probably the closest thing I've seen to what I am looking for. It shows how kommunes gained and lost acreage. It is very interesting. http://home.eunet.no/~jeri/maps.shtml Click on the second "here" and it will take you to the chart. Main page shows a "picture" of current kommuner. Just click on the Fylke you want. There is an excellant map resource at www.dis-norge.no/genress. Look for maps and then you should look for Norgesglasset. I hope the link is visible outside Norway. There you may zoom into very small details on the map.

I'm sure that the names changed gradually, over the centuries (unless there was a "great renaming" or something? Haven't heard of it if there was), so there's not really one set of "old", just a collection of snapshots in time. It certainly would be useful to have a listing of parishes which have changed name, and when they change. I don't know if this also involved border changes (I would think it would, or one parish splits into two). It's an interesting question...what you want, is a map that you can dial to a specific date & look at. The information exists, but I don't know if anyone has presented it that way. Kind of like going to mapquest, but where you could also enter a year, not just latitude/longitude. Dave Hinz

Check out http://www.norge.no/ and click on "Kart" (maps) You can click on the Fylke you're interested in, and then this will show you that map, with the parishes as they currently are. (note: I don't see Finaas in this map). Once you do find the Parish you want, you can select it in the "Velg kommune" menu to see a map of that parish. Another resource might be the 1801 census pages, which I seem to recall have a "old name/current name" page (...somewhere). Between that, and the maps at norge.no, perhaps you'll be able to find what you're after. Hope this helps, Dave Hinz

    3. Appreciate that feedback! What other family names are out there that reflect occupations? And are some of those occupations "long gone"? We still have millers, but we are out of charcoalburners... or? Since Nordic folk had a long tradition with the seas, are there many / any occupational names that clearly relate to that? Mange tack, eh! So much of the spelling depends not only on country, but which of that country's varieties of language, and what century the information is from. Dave Hinz
