I am looking for information on the parents of two people born in Løten, Hedmark fylke, in the 1780's: Peder Olsen, born 1783, died 1843 Pernille Nilsdtr, born 1780, died 1826 There were married to each other sometime around 1812. Thanks much for any information anyone can find. John

As far as I can judge, the translation is excellent. From the text, it is not clear when what happened. The young Christoffer seems to have inherited his mother, Kjerstine, in 1828. Next, he should inherit Kjerstine's part after Hans in 1843. ...that is, provided Kjerstine was born in marriage (or decleared Hans' lawful offspring at the "ting" (local asembly)). However, when did the grandfather (Hans' father, it seems) show up? 1828? 1843? If the latter, the reservations may have related to Kjerstine's right to inherit Hans. The text do not say whether he spoke for or against this. If Hans had no other child than Kjerstine, her child/-ren would get most of the inheritance after Hans. If Kjerstine had no right after Hans (and there was no other child), Hans' father would inherit him. The translation seems to me to be mostly correct. From my dictionary: After skifte (subst.) ==> (arveskifte) division of an inheritance (,of an estate). his arvelodd ==> hereditary share, share of (an) inheritance; (jur.) portion (of an inheritance). were paid out. --- The word "doubt" -- in this context, I find it more correct to use "reservation". My guess, he expressed a degree of uncertainty, due to either the calculatation of the dividend (pence in the pound), and/or the value of the estate. Or, maybe the payment itself, did it really occur as stated ? From this small text portion, I can't tell the ground for dismissal of his reservations. Could be due to unfounded/baseless reasons, or a legal technicality.

I appreciate the information from you and Joe Pessara and everyone who emailed me. I started looking through filmed 1860 census records at a nearby FHL. Some of the records are quite legible, most marginal, but I can recognize age patterns more quickly than surnames when going through the records. My search so far is based on Lorenz Petersen being born in 1825, almost ten years after his wife Margrethe (1816), with a 10 year old son Hans in 1860. I'm hoping it'll be clear when I run across that pattern that I could have a potential match. The other side of the family will have Peter Hansen Petersen (born 1821) and his wife Elise (born 1823), though I don't know whether they were married early enough for the 1860 census; their first child Peter was born in 1861. This is a family where twins seem to abound, however, so I'll keep my eye open for families with twins in Tonder. So far I haven't run across likely candidates for my family in the online census records at http://ddd.dda.dk/ddd_en.htm, though I'll keep checking. One thing that was helpful was finding this helpful site, pointed out by Hugh Watkins on a mail list: http://www.dis-danmark.dk/kipkort/fronta-e.htm This shows the progress of census transcriptions for the region. I need clarification of the date of death of Þorlákur Arngrímsson b. 6 Mar 1841 in Knappstadir, Skagafjörður, Iceland. I know he died in a boating accident in the Dýrafirði fjord in northwest Iceland but the database I have been using lists the date of his death as 1871 and I know he had a son, Magnús Tryggvi Þorláksson who was b. June 22 1872. Because of the significant difference in time between the father's death and the son's birth, I wonder if Þorlákur's death was actually in 1872, not 1871. Can anyone suggest a source I might use for clarification of this date?

On the death certificate for my great-grandparents' eldest son (he died in 1926) his parents' birthplace is listed as Tondern, Germany. This is the closest I've gotten to an actual location for their birth. I'm aware of the shifting borders between Denmark and Germany and the reason for those changes, so I guess trying to determine whether they were born in Denmark or Germany (1850 and 1862 respectively) is never going to be certain. But in searching for local records---birth, parents' marriages, census--- will I be seeking records of a town called Tondern/Tonder, a county, or a larger overall parish? And are such records available under German or Danish jurisdiction? When they emigrated separately to the States (1872 and 1878), my great- greandfather's last residence was reported as Tinningstedt, my great- grandmother's as Leck. Are those city records in the same parish or county? I've been web searching for answers but it's not entirely clear to me yet. Any help would be most welcomed.
