Hey folks should you get a strange email from me, I did not send it. I have just had my address book hijacked and before I knew it hundreds of strange messages had been sent out. Hopefully no one opens them or clicks on the URL contained in them. All seems to be well now, but, I have had to change all my passwords on email and have run Malwarebytes and found one offending file that I have deleted now and the computer is clear. This is the first time I have ever had this happen so be aware should it happen to you, change the passwords for your email and run both a virus and malware scan to be safe. -- * Jim Hope*
I sympathize with you Jim as a few days before Christmas not only did they hijack my address book they took my email address as well. Thanks for letting us know, Jim, and for telling us how to get out of the problem if we encounter it. For your information, you have a lot of company out there. I think those of us who have managed to avoid being a hijack victim have been very lucky. Elaine One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor..... Jim, changing all your passwords was the right thing to do, and hopefully, that will fix it. But, there seems to be some misunderstanding about email account highjacking. Email account highjacking is usually done at the mail server account. Not on your computer. The operating system has nothing to do with it. Having said that, it is of course possible for windows users to get a virus that can harvest and use their address book. On the Mac thing. As far as I am aware, their is no known Mac or Linux virus that can access an address book. Also, I understand the Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Lion now have anti-malware protection built in.
