Joyce, you might look to see if she moved in with a relative such as one husband's family members and census taker assumed she was the wife.   Look for children with relatives, aunts, uncles, grandparents, in-laws.  I once looked for a family, in that time frame, where the husband had died in 1875 and could not find the wife in 1880.  Finally found the four young children farmed out with various relatives and a possibility for the wife (initials) in a nearby poorhouse.   Might also check to see if she applied for a pension from her husbands military service.   How would their last name have sounded if they had spoken with an accent? Caspar seems like an unusual name, could this be them??? How sure are you of his death date?
