    2. Hello Elaine, I am using windows 7 but I'm also having problems with IE9. Many times it says a problem was created and IE must shut down. Do you think Essentials would help? Thanks for the response. Jack -----Original Message----- From: ETM Sent: Friday, March 22, 2013 6:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GN] Recommendations What OS do you use, Jack? I think Microsoft Security Essentials works with almost all of the OS's now in use. I am using it with Win7. It's free and you can download it from Microsoft. 3. Elaine, do you use Microsoft Essentials in place of, or in conjunction with, other virus protection programs? 3. Jack, set a restore and then download and install IE 10 and see if you do better. It works fine with my Win 7. But I admit that I am experimenting and almost exclusively using Chrome because I want to see how well I sync between Windows laptops and a Chromebook. MSE is an anti-vir*us program, not a fixer. If you are after a fixer, I have enjoyed using the free version of Advanced System Care enough that I finally broke down and bought the pro version when it was offered at a discount. It does more than CCleaner though I have always fallen back on CCleaner for 90% of my computer maintenance. Here is what I use if it helps. The problem with doing this is different manufacturers and configurations don't always work well with the same setups. Anti-virus -- Microsoft Security Essentials Windows with ALL updates Chrome is default browser, I also use Firefox and Internet Explorer 10 depending on what I might encounter at a website I use WinPatrol at all times since it alerts me to any odd things occurring in my start up. I contributed a small amount to them and have a lifetime license for I think a minimum of three computers I use the Windows Firewall I use SpywareBlaster and love it, I use the freebie, and it sits quietly in the background. Because I use the free version I must personally seek updates, it does not update itself. I have MalwareByes here but don't often remember it since I installed Advanced System Care (ASC) since it does protect against malware. I did use Roboform for password management, but dislike that they are branching out more and more and charging yearly fees. I went to Dashlane a few months ago and it is on my Chromebook and on my laptops and tablets and I really like it. I should break down and make a contribution. I use a third party mail program, TheBat! by RitLabs. I don't encourage it because there is a bit of a learning curve and it is not free. But Iwouldn't be without it though there have been major changes in it in the last version. I have five eBook readers on my laptop. I read in the Cloud on my Chromebook, mainly on the eReaders, and occasionally on my laptop. I use IrfanView free for graphics. I use Media Center primarily to bring in TV and I use a small TV tuner which has a small TV antenna and plugs into a USB port. I use WordWebPro (has a free version, I donated for the pro version) because I like it better than going out to the web to check a definition. It's truly a fine dictionary and if it doesn't cover the word, it takes you to the web if you opt for that. I use FastStoneCapture (paid, but there's a free version, I donated) to capture screen shots in all kinds of configurations when I want pages from the internet, I use Carbonite for out of house backup to their servers. I also have some free cloud space available from Amazon and Google because of my accounts with them. Both also sell space on their servers. I use Real Player (paid) by preference because I like the way it downloads videos for me. I also use iTunes because I have a number of Apple handheld devices. I think I have hit the top of the programs, but I do have a lot of programs and some I use so seldomly I forget what they do. Ask if you think I use something you are interested in. I do burn CDs and DVDs and do stream movies via Amazon and Netflix occasionally, I don't edit music or videos, I accept them as they are and probably will never make any effort to do that. I hope this isn't a ton more than you wanted to hear and read.
