Tom, What does your word "crowdsourced" mean? That is a new word for me. Janet -----Original Message----- From: Thomas Jay Kemp <[email protected]> To: gen-newbie <[email protected]> Sent: Thu, Mar 21, 2013 10:37 am Subject: Re: [GN] familysearh website Sure. Online trees are a group effort - today we'd say they're crowdsourced. So - everyone puts up what they know. You might know that the mother's name was: Mary Someone else might know that it was: Mary Alice Starbird Great - with data and updates flowing in we can get each person accurately entered - what a great approach. Best of all it is free at: https://familysearch.org/ When you see your family on there - improve it. Add more details and especially add the source citations and if possible links so that others can see the rationale for your conclusions. Notice too that you can add photos - what a great way to preserve and share those. Many hands make light work - so let's all pitch in to get our data online, shared and preserved. Crowdsourced/crowdsourcing - means that 'the crowd' - all of us genealogists - are working on the online family tree together. With everyone adding information, source citations, photographs etc. we are jointly and cooperatively creating the documentation on our ancestors. The old model was the lone genealogist compiling the family history - the new model is the 'crowd' working cooperatively to build the tree. The scale is enormous. Crowdsourcing on FamilySearch.org is adding over 1 million indexing documents (birth, marriage, probate records etc.) - every day - 365 days a year. Wow. It's a new world. It is a new term coined to describe the online world of information. Wikipedia is a good example of crowdsourcing. With millions of genealogists working on the Family Tree at FamilySearch.org - that is also an example of crowdsourcing - sharing - cooperative work to pull together the best information about our ancestors. It gets the records online, preserved and shared for the rising generation On Thu, Mar 21, 2013 at 1:38 PM, <[email protected]> wrote: > > Tom, > > What does your word "crowdsourced" mean? Thanks Tom, It was a new word to me. I am a very old researcher, before computers, so it was new to me. I learned a whole different way to do genealogy. When computers began we had genealogy mail lists that were very active with everyone helping each other, many people posting information from books and records to help others as well as connecting online with someone following your line, then we sent records to each other. I am sure there are many of us left. I am still learning something new everyday. I too remember those days on the email lists, Janet, and I'm sorry to see them go away. Crowdsourcing, ancestry's (and so many other sites') family trees, etc. still can't do what those lists did. There was information being posted all the time and even if a particular post didn't pertain to our own lines, they so often offered clues, ideas that helped fill in information blanks or taught us new ways to think, things to explore and made us better family historians. I remember this list way back when - when the majority of questions had to do with how to research, or what to do next, or websites were shared.
