Rana Just realized that no one had answered this. I no longer have 2010, but I think it is the same as 2013. If you have the tool bar up, it is easy to select "no spacing" rather than "normal." Or, if you wish, right click on "normal" and in the box, select the "spacing" (on 2013 it is the second set of boxes from the left). On the bottom, select "New documents based on this template." Uncheck the "add to Styles template." Say "OK". Then, I suggest that you go back to the base page, click on the bottom "down arrow" with the line over the triangle, at right of the styles, at the bottom select and "create a style," create the original spaced style by clicking on the middle of the spacing options. Then, make sure "add to the styles gallery" and "only in this document." Say OK. This makes your default the "no spacing." As you will note, you can also select a preferred font. I prefer Times Roman, so I've changed that as well. IF it doesn't do what you want, just reverse the procedure. Hope this helps. I'm not Rana, but a note in response. Using Word 13, I changed line spacing to No Spacing, using the drop down menu, checked, "New Documents based on this template" and Okay. Did the same with changing font size from 11 to 12, sent to the drop down menu and checked "Default.... use for all future documents" and Okay. Next time I brought up Word, same old same old. Default font at 11, and spacing at normal rather than no spacing. Just doesn't work.
