I have a Dell Latitude D520 with Windows XP Professional. I checked and it says will not support Windows 7. My budget doesn't stretch to a new laptop just now....is there something else that I might use on this laptop for more secure operation. I use this for a kind of back-up for pictures and documents, FTM and other things, but it is not my main computer. I did add more memory to it last year....it now has 2GB of memory. This has been a lifesaver in the past when my desktop had problems. I would like to keep it working the best possible. Beth

If you do not expose the computer to the Internet ( not connected to a modem), it won't make any difference what operating system you use. If you need to connect, I would suggest looking into Linux. I did some poking around and the latitude is not directly supported by DELL in any of their combo cab files, however this doesn't mean it wont work. It would be just a very custom install. 2 megs ain't much, but it is certainly enough to run a 32 bit ver of win7. You may not be able to get the built sound card working fully, and the graphics drivers may not be able to use some of the options in in win 7, but I'd be willing to bet it would work as well if not better than it does now. I haven't look to see if there are modem or ethnet drivers that will work with your exact system, but again that is more of a matter of doing some digging . If there is a work around for that there is also no reason you couldn't go on line with it. The big caveat is most places don't want to mess around doing all the research and digging,,,not any money in it.
