The next muster, 31 Dec 1942, adds that Edgar enlisted from Nashville, Tenn, James Grandison from Portsmouth, VA. Charles Garvis is no longer aboard. Charles shows up on the next muster, again 31 Dec, which has the same information, except for the rates. Charles Garvis is SK2c, Edgar Ellison CM2c, and James Grandison is OCC(AA) Well, well, the next muster, 31 March of 1943, Charles Garvis is SK1c, Edgar Ellison is CM2c, and a new Garrett, Jack Perry, S.2c.V6, enlisted 17 Sept 1942, reported 3/31/1943. Edgar next goes to the President Adams. The others do not. He reported to the vessel 15 July 1943. Rate still MC2c. The next muster, 31 December 1943, Edgar is promoted to CM1c. On the Dixie, 30 Apr 1945, has no further information, just that he was aboard on the date of sailing. Unfortunately, these muster rolls do not include the interesting information as to where the ships were at the time, you'd have to go to the individual record for that, I would guess. During March and April she trained assault troops in New Zealand then transported men and materiel from there, and from Australia, to Guadalcanal, whence she steamed with Army forces for Rendova. Landing those troops on 30 June, she took on survivors from McCawley on 1 July and sailed to Noumea. From New Caledonia, President Adams returned to New Zealand, underwent an abbreviated overhaul, then resumed transporting men and equipment to the Solomons and training assault troops for amphibious operations - this time for Bougainville. On 1 November, after bombarding the beaches at Torokina Point, she landed the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, at Empress Augusta Bay. During the next six months, President Adams returned to Bougainville three times with reinforcements; carried Army Engineers to Emirau; transported two groups of Army reinforcements to Cape Gloucester on New Britain; and then prepared for action in the Marianas." Thank you so much. I think for once I have found him. It is likely he did enlist in Nashville. The uncles in the Army are shown as enlisting at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia. I need to see if I can find any information concerning the Dixie, as that may have been the ship that was either destroyed or damaged. I know grandma received an MIA telegram at least once. You are always so great about helping all of us with our searches.
