    1. Re: [GN] possible v*irus on other computer
    2. Thanks, George. I will try all this. Unfortunately I have to take my disabled husband to the doctor today, and that will tie up a few hours ... the getting ready, the going, the waiting in the waiting room, the actual appointment, the coming home and the getting settled. And all the meals. And perhaps the shower. Aaaaargh! If I can find some time after that after lunch and before making dinner I will set myself to doing it. Otherwise it may be tomorrow. I really do thank you! Fololow the instructions below Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. 2.Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. You may have to insert you system disk if it finds a problem,,, There is also a good chance you have bad memory,,I'd check for that also..You didn't mention what type of system we are working on ,,laptop or desk top. You can try reseating the memory modules..You also didn't mention wether you had and AV program and what it was( name please) If indeed you do have a virus or trojan,,You may have to run a small program designed to stop all unnecessary processes from running ,,than run a scan using Malware bytes..Download to a usb drive from a known working machine..let me know and I'll try to help. If you cannot get malware bytes to install I'll send you a small program used to stop unnecessary processes from loading, than try to install, again let me know. The other one is an HP Vista 32-bit desktop, bought new in early 2008. I wrote last week or so, describing symptoms, it shut itself off in the middle of 3 (I think) sessions and wouldn't start again on the last one. Then up popped an official-looking window asking if I wanted to restore to an earlier date and I said yes, and it did, but I lost a lot of capability when it did so, and I lost Windows Mail (not Windows Live Mail). So when the one person who responded suggested a later restore date, one that was closer to the present date, everything went from bad to worse. I pretty much can't do anything on the computer except get on line. I can download but not run what I download. My son-in-law was just here and looked at it and he thinks it's a v*irus. How do you find out which v*irus you have, if any ... that would go a long way to restoring it to a working computer, if I knew what it was and could get the appropriate tool to fix it? I cannot run anything I download. We tried to download and run Housecall, but again ... can't run the download. I don't know safe sites to work from. If I needed to download to this computer, it is 64-bit, but I could download and make a disk on this one? But I still don't know which v*irus it is, if it is one. Is there any help?
